guanaeps (saethron) | 88 comments Recently acquired books have been:

Descender Deluxe HC
Vision OHC
Captain America Vol 1 Omnibus — non-golden age.

Definitely in for Waid and Samnee's Daredevil Vol 2 Omnibus this week.

I'm curious to see if Infinity War and Infinity Crusade will ever get the omnibus treatment.

Who’s pumped to spend an absurd amount of money tomorrow . . . Ah bitter sweet. I bought a unnecessary purchase last week just to snag the 3% discount tomorrow.

Nickviola | 1019 comments I’m in for Daredevil, Kamandi, and Absolute Preacher 2 to get ready for V3 coming out soon. So yeah, I’m eating tuna sandwiches this week.

message 3757: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments You think after all their effort to honor Kirby they’d at least get his pages right.

Lemire is coming back to Marvel to write a Sentry series with Kim Jacinto on art. I've like what I've read from Lemire with Marvel on single characters (I thought his X-Men wasn't super but Old Man Logan was his best). Not familiar with Jacinto's art but I googled it and it looks decent.

message 3759: by The Lion's Share (new)

The Lion's Share Now that sounds interesting. Lemire could turn out to be the new Hickman. I love his indie stuff. Hated old man Logan, but Thanks looks v good.

Also Sentry isn’t utilised all that much. I assume because it would be dangerous to include someone so over powered and similar to superman.

message 3760: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Agree with Cheese, Lemire’s jndie stuff is legend and I wish Marvel would give him more creative control, his previous X and Logan stuff was clearly telling a company mandated story.

Regardless of the writer I'm not sure of the potential of the character unless something changes. He is way too powerful and his mental instability is interesting but how many times can he struggle with it? I'm curious but unsure.

Looks like Vision OHC has glued binding and very thin pages. Disappointing from Marvel but I can’t say I’m surprised coming from the Big Two. Hesitant to buy into this now. I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to buy and look through this...?

I didn't have any issues with mine. I've seen thinner pages so that isn't as bad as it could be. I think it is worth the price. They could have slapped the word "omnibus" on it and charged us another $20 for it and most of us would have still bought it and recommended it.

message 3764: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Vision is so good, not one to skip because of binding I’d say

message 3765: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments Well I’m not saying these details would cause issues. It’s the principle. I’d expect thicker pages and a better binding than what you’d get with a standard hardcover. For me these details contribute to the overall reading experience. I don’t mind having standard hardcovers with thin pages over paperbacks for durability, if there’s nothing better available.

message 3766: by TheLastWord (new)

TheLastWord | 35 comments This is a great topic.

It would probably be easier to say what collected editions I haven't gotten recently. :)

I got the first Superoversized Stekanko artist edition, that was designed by Steranko himself. His design sense remains untouchable, his use of red and black separator pages, gorgeous. I have the omnibus and it is really interesting comparing the artist edition, along with the plentiful notes he puts in the margins to the finished work. One of the best Artists Editions. Right up there with the Basil Wolverton and The EC Artists artist edition.

A couple more I will mention quickly, THE MIRACLEMAN Artifact edition and The Kelly Jones Batman Gallery Edition.

I have never cared for Kelley Jones artwork, I don't dislike it, I just don't particularly like it. I got the chance to see the interior of this book before buying. Absolutely amazing with just the pencils and great inks by John Beatty, you can see the work and brilliance that got lost in the coloring. A must own.

The Miracleman Artifact Edition, wow, those Totleben pages are glorious. Surprisingly so are the Alan Davis and Rick Veitch pages. And lovely use of blue divder pages. A gorgeously designed book.

Ok, that's my list for now.

message 3767: by TheLastWord (new)

TheLastWord | 35 comments Yeah Don, I have to agree with Rel.

The Tom King Vision Hardcover is pretty darn great. The pages are thin and a bit wavy, and it is a glued binding, but it is solid as a rock. That binding will probably outlast all of us on this forum.

As far as getting your money's worth, All 12 issues, complete with the letterspages, in a solid hardcover with dustcover, for less than the original issues (I paid $28 for mine) I call that a FANTASTIC deal. I don't think you'll be disappointed, not in the series (unlike the Batman Tom King books, which I am not a fan of) or the hardcover.

message 3768: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments You bastards must work in sales : D Yeah that does sound pretty decent. I don’t hate glued binding. It’s perfectly fine. I just have my preferences. And yes, having the complete run in a durable format is what really counts, especially for probably the best run to come out of Marvel in years.

message 3769: by TheLastWord (new)

TheLastWord | 35 comments Ha, Ha! Another convert to the Vision Hardcover!! We did it Rel!

But seriously Don, you will love the book, wavy pages and all, or I'll buy it back from you for half what you pay for it. :)

I have this one on my wish list. I bought all the in print available Hellboys/BPRD HCs this year so far except this one. Vol 2 should be out next week.

Out this week:

Nailbiter HC 2 (with DCBS variant cover)
Sheriff of Babylon DLX
Justice League of America Bronze Age Omnibus vol 2
DC Comics The Art of Darwyn Cooke (standards size?)
Green Lantern Earth One HC vol 1 (standard size)

message 3772: by Josh (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments It was a big week for me!

Nailbiter HC v2 DCBS Variant
Sheriff of Babylon HC
TMNT HC v6
Irredeemable HC v5
Dreadful Beauty: Art of Providence

If you are looking to pick up the Art of Providence book, you may want to do it sooner rather than later. Like the recent Neonomicon HC reprint, the Art of Providence book is limited to 1000 copies, and Neonomicon was sold out in about two weeks.

Also, if you are a Mind MGMT fan, there is a one shot out. Only 500 copies, and it's signed and numbered, so it may go fast: http://www.mattkindtshop.com/product-...

Happy Hunting!

They bumped the release date up a few months ago. It almost never works to get us things this much faster. :)

Stalin's Cosmic Odyssey DLX has been on my wish list for a while now. You should let me know what you think after you pick it up. :)

I am looking forward to reading Soule's follow up on Gillen's Vader book. I really haven't heard much about it at all. Hopefully not an ominous sign.

message 3779: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments I’m pretty excited for Cosmic Odyssey. Heard great things about Mignola’s artwork and solid things about Starlin’s writing. I’m not expecting the writing to blow me away, because it’s 1988, but I loved Crisis (for what it was) and that was 1985 and twice as long. $20 seems fair for a DLX. I also went ahead and got Death of the New Gods HC while I was at it. Been curious about cosmic DC for a while so I jumped. Look for my reviews in the coming weeks : D

The reviews seem fair to very good for Soule’s Vader. I think reviews are sparse because the trade has only been out a few months. At least the first volume I think is leagues ahead of Gillen. Soule plays on our nostalgia but he gives us something more than just that.

Do you have all the Irredeemable OHCs? I feel like you had at least some of them. There are 11 out and the final book comes out in May.

The Book of Chaos published by Humanoids is worth a read and it's close to Absolute size at just under $30.

Lemire's Trillium DLX is been on my wish list for a while now.
If you don't have his Decsender HC I really think it is my favorite thing by him.

Surely there is a Batman DLX you don't have. :p

You can always check out a few first TPBs of series you think you might like. Autumnlands by Busik is one I think you would like but you need the first two books since it takes off more in the second volume. Birthright is worth it. Rumble is pretty fun.

message 3783: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments Both the Trillium and Descender DLXs are great in content and format.

Here are pics of the Infinity Gauntlet Box set. The coffee mug is standard size to help y'all understand the size of the box (massive). The box itself is tall enough to run flush next to an omnibus collection, but the books are just SHC; You can see the inside has a Styrofoam filler at the top. As such, although tall enough, the box set will run as deep as an omnibus, for purposes of shelf display, but if an omnibus was actually put in the box, I don't think the front cover flap would close. I wonder if there was ever a plan to print in Omni size; probably not. Although I wish it was Omni size, I'm not disappointed in the box set at all.

That box set is very nice. :)

message 3786: by guanaeps (new)

guanaeps (saethron) | 88 comments Wow, looks delicious. I'm sure it's gonna sky rocket in value after the movie. Nice grab.

My recently acquired list:

S.H.I.E.L.D Omnibus
Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1-3
Doom Patrol Omnibus

Been putting the Spider-Man omni's off for a while now, but since I'm on a Ditko kick right now, it seemed like the right time to secure them. Plus I'm sensing a value hike in Marvel books post-Avengers Infinity War.

Getting Avengers Vol. 3 next week.

Praise the tax return!

Agreed! It's cool that the box matches the Omnibus height.

Thanks for the suggestions on other books. I may just wait till the first week of April when I buy the Avengers v3 omnibus. Also still debating on Absolute Batman Year One...

message 3789: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments BYO DLX or Absolute? The DLX is great, couldn’t pop on the Absolute.

message 3790: by TheLastWord (new)

TheLastWord | 35 comments Don, I've seen a good comparison video between BYO Absolute vs BYO deluxe. I think the deluxe is the way to go. I don't really need the duplication of the newsprint version and the remastered version, that you get with the absolute. Plus $100 for 4 issues, is a bit overkill. The $25 Beluxe version will work just fine. :) Infact I'm thinking about selling mt Absolute Crisis on Infinite Earths, and going with the Deluxe instead.

I really enjoy having the George Perez art at Absolute size, and you are getting twelve issues. However I really am not a fan of the matte paper used for the Crisis Absolute. It is very subdued, I would much prefer the stock on brighter and glossier stock. The stock almost gives the impression of newsprint, which I'm not a fan of,

Decisions, decisions. :)

p.s. I did pick up the Graphic Audio CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS full cast audio book. It starts off a bit wonky, but has some great moments, especially the Super Girl part. Definitely recommended. Not as good as the Kingdom Come audio book, but still a solid B.

message 3791: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments Agreed on BYO. I couldn’t justify that much either. Although the before and after coloring would be cool to see side by side. Absolute Killing Joke is $50 retail, more reasonable IMO.

I would hang onto Absolute Crisis though cuz the DLX is shit. Tight glued binding, bad gutter loss, and really thin practically newsprint paper. And those splash pages with 100+ characters are hard to see on such a small format and terrible paper. I sold my DLX hoping for a used Absolute or Absolute reprint. One of the few times I want the Absolute, especially for the artwork. Similarly, Watchmen DLX is also garbage.

message 3793: by TheLastWord (new)

TheLastWord | 35 comments Don thanks for letting me know about The Crisis Deluxe issues. Really good to know, you just saved me from making a bad decision.

And regarding the Crisis audio book, it has good moments, but I am on the last CD now, and what they made work in the comics, just comes across in a lot of the audio book as completely ludicrous and nonsensical, even for a superhero story. It is worth a listen, but not seeing this as something I am going to come back to. If Kingdom Come is an A+ this Crisis Audio book is closer to a C/C-.
