Black & white has been done by Dark Horse in English, but not right to left. It's worth it to me, and I already own the Dark Horse SC's and the Akira Club HC Artbook...

No problem. :) It does look cool, and if any manga deserves it, it's Akira. I would've loved to see Domu included as well. That book is way too good to be OOP.

The Lion's Share If you don’t know manga you need to read lone wolf and cub.

It's well worth the price-tag. Some of the early posters are hit or miss, but 320 out of 360 pages are just fantastic; they could probably put out an 'Art of Mondo II' in another year or so. I hope they do.

XenofoneX | 172 comments Cheese wrote: "If you don’t know manga you need to read lone wolf and cub."

Yes. Lone Wolf & Cub's one of the essentials, along with Akira. It's hard to pick one above the other, but I'd personally give Akira a slight edge for Otomo's artwork.

Thanks for those additional books Eisnein! I have some of those Mondo prints. I'm check out your review momentarily. :)

Akira keeps sounding interesting the more you guys talk about it...

message 3310: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I am getting a little warn down from the superhero genre, I feel like after Punisher, Runaways, and Simonson's Thor I have taken in some of the best of the ultra-violent/surrealist, YA, and classic superhero and need more "other" thats not Image or Jeff Lemire. Akira could be a gateway to different sequential storytelling options?

...Or I have an addiction that has convinced me its essential and a never-to-be-seen again deal.

Its one or the other.

I wish I had gotten into the Mondo thing early on, to grab one of those Aaron Horkey True Grit prints, or the Hitchcock editions by Taylor & Durieux. Hell, it could be the shittiest movie ever made; if one of those three does the poster, I want it. I'll be watching close for the next one in that vein, but the eBay secondary market prices are just crazy...

I've given up on trying to predict who might like one book based on their previous favorites, but Akira is a champ when it comes to reader approval, and it's one of the best comics ever created... I've read it through 5 times over the last 15 years, and I look forward to reading it backwards... and in hardcover... and crammed into a cool little box.

CORRECT: There's a profound evolutionary logic behind the powerful unconscious female attraction to thirty-something men who still collect comic-books.

Comic-Book fans only follow LARP-ers & MineCraft champs when it comes to getting top dollar at Fertility Clinics for their primo Nerd-sperm.

Olympic athletes? One-trick ponies. MIT & Harvard Phd's? BOOORing. Billionaire entrpreneurs like Elon Musk? The Hyper-Loop is a quarter-billion dollar sinkhole with so many basic engineering problems, it's possible Elon Musk just plays a smart person on TV.

No, the ideal man for the woman of today is Kevin Smith.

Cultivate your inner 'Fatman', because the geeks & nerds & troglodytic neck-beards are the future. The terrifying future :)

Eisnein, this list of someone's top 100 Mondo posters might interest you. He has some good descriptions for the prints: http://abfilmreview.com/top-100-mondo...

I made a couple small orders from IST last week. They have yet to ship them though the tracking numbers have been created showing they are ready to go.

message 3323: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments Ha! If anything comics are more expensive than hookers. But yes, safer indeed.

Nice list.

Art is obviously subjective, but I'm pretty picky when it comes to Mondo posters. There are certain art styles (haven't narrowed down the names yet) that I just don't care for. I also prefer a little more innovation and creativity in the poster as opposed to just showing a scene from the movie or collage of images. Also don't care for when the movie is about a specific character, but that character is only 1% of the entire image.

I've still yet to get on their mailing list...

message 3325: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments @Rel Sometimes they sit on them if they get really busy. They always have a few “processing” days unfortunately.

Very nice, thanks Rel! That looks like a great site; I've already seen a good few that I don't recognize, perhaps newer ones... I think the last year cut-off for the book was 2015, and I'm not sure if they collected every poster from 2009-2015... but 7 years and 360 pages averages out to roughly one new poster every week, which sounds about right. The guy who made that list knows the history of Mondo well, and his taste in artists is pretty solid (I'm not a big Jay Shaw fan, but I must admit his Silence of the Lambs poster is great).

But is it a good series? Ive not been a big fan of Remender.

message 3329: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Tocchinni art is incredible, I feel like I’m walking through a museum more than reading a book. Remender is also my favorite writer and Uncanny X-Men and Black Science are two of my favorite series ever.

It’s a post-apocalyptic story focused on 1 family hiding in a civilization under water and their search for hope. It is one of my favorite stories ever - comics or otherwise - but again this falls neatly into a lot of my loves. If you don’t like Remender then our tastes may be far apart so flip through some images online and if you like the art pick up the first trade and see.

Yeah of his stuff Ive read Captain America, Uncanny Avengers, and Black Science. I just couldn't click with any of them. Though Uncanny Avengers started really well.

message 3331: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Yeah, I get it. There are things everyone loves that I don’t go crazy for. Sean Murphy art for example, I can’t distinguish his male faces so even though a lot of his linework is cool I don’t go out of my way for his stuff which is probably sacrilege.

message 3332: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments All that excitement and then no Akira Box set today?

message 3333: by Donovan (new)

Donovan | 1154 comments @Jesse I passed on Low Deluxe because I didn’t like the series all that much, couldn’t connect with the characters, and I can’t stand Tocchini’s artwork. It’s too vague/muddy and the series could’ve used far better coloring IMO. Also couldn’t get into Black Science which everyone loves. However I have loved Fear Agent, Tokyo Ghost, and Deadly Class.

Yeah I've noticed that things get super confused around the time of the release.

It'd be nice if instocktrades actually utilized their twitter to make announcements on delays and whatnot. I keep planning on buying books around these tenuous schedules and then everything changes. I guess I'm just sore that I'm gonna miss out on the 2% discount haha

Checking random sites online shows they have them in stock, some sites even say that it went on sale last week, on the 24th.

I just ordered Thor omnibus Vol 3 with the Dauterman cover.

The LOW Super-OHC came in yesterday and my god its gorgeous. Also got the ODY-C OHC, if only for the Christian Ward insanity.

message 3347: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Ward is nuts on ODY-C. I need to pick that up ASAP. As a former Latin/mythology student, it’s a joy and quite an experiment they undertook to gender swap the odyssey and make it an acid trip.

message 3348: by guanaeps (new)

guanaeps (saethron) | 88 comments Yeah its a fascinating book; I'd love to have posters of some of the panels. I'd also like to brush up on my Odyssey knowledge because I feel like I'm under-appreciating Fraction's efforts in the book.

Apparently he's trying to write in some form of poetic meter, something I wasn't even cognizant of my first read-through.

message 3349: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments FYI re: AKIRA 35th anniversary boxset...

Available for order on barbers and noble and if you use the 20% “letsread” discount today and the baseline 42% off, it comes to $103.50 total including tax and shipping (listing is $200).

I can’t speak to how well they ship, but I went for it since I assume the IST price would be 100 at best and who knows why they don’t have it. I’ll update how it ships when/if it arrives.
