Tara | 225 comments @Megan - I'm not sure what all is involved in safety patrol to be completely honest, ha! I know they have to get there earlier than everyone else and help hold the doors open for all the kids, as well as helping in the cafeteria with clean-up after breakfast. There's more but I don't know the details yet. I'm not entirely sure how the nomination process goes either, I just know that they are nominated by the teachers. I don't know how many students are selected for safety patrol or how many nominations they have to get. I just know it's a "big deal" for the kiddos! He's been talking about wanting to be on safety patrol since he was in kindergarten.

Tara | 225 comments @Vicki - thank you for your kind words :) It's hard raising responsible kids these days. Our elementary school works very hard on their ROAR expectations … which is Respect, Organized and Always Responsible. I love our school district (can you tell?? ha!).

message 54: by Halli (new)

Halli | 500 comments Do we want to do our recommendations in a separate thread like the other teams? Here are mine:

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven
& then my favorite author of all time, Ruta Sepetys & her 3 books:
Out of the Easy, Between Shades of Gray, & Salt to the Sea

We've begun packing book recommendations in preparation for our Odyssey and will continue updating the list throughout the challenge.

Book Recommendations from Team Odyssey

Happy reading!

Zuza | 168 comments Hi everyone,

I just wanted to check-in 🙂. My name is Zuzana and I live in The Czech republic. My favorite genres are ya but if a book sounds interesting enough to me, I will give it a try.

This is my first Wheel-a-thon and I am so excited. I think that the easiest tag for me will be "space". The first book I wanted to read for this challenge was City of Heavenly Fire, but before I knew it, I was like 40 pages in 😁, so that is a no go. Maybe All the Stars and Teeth, it has such a beautiful cover.

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments @Vicki - oh my gosh Cousin Camp sounds AMAZING. I am definitely going to do something like that when me and my sister have kids!

@Tara - Oh I love how excited he is about Safety Patrol, I hope he gets to go back to school soon!

@Zuza - Welcome aboard! The cover for All the Stars and Teeth really is gorgeous. Sounds like a fun book too.

message 60: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments My recommendations:

The Humans by Matt Haig by Matt Haig
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden by Arthur Golden
The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1) by Brandon Sanderson by Brandon Sanderson (whole series)
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness by Patrick Ness
Kings of the Wyld (The Band, #1) by Nicholas Eames by Nicholas Eames

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments It is so fascinating to read about everyone's lives! =)

I don't have any children myself; I need to find a great man first=P My family are quite small. I have one sister and only six cousins, all girls. My sister doesn't have any kids either, but I like to think I'm a favorite "aunt" to my best friend's three-year-old=)

At the moment I work parttime in a bookstore, which I love! I used to be a dentist until a few years ago but had to quit due to personal reasons. Even though I love the job I have now, it is not enough economically, so I might have to go back to working in dental health after some retraining (I've applied to universities, and will receive answers in July).

Other hobbies I have besides reading are exercising (jogging, hiking, and handball mostly), knitting/cross-stitching, and gaming/TV.

message 62: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments My recommendations:
The Tattooist of Auschwitz (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, #1) by Heather Morris The Tattooist of Auschwitz
Educated by Tara Westover Educated
Don't Rush Me (Nora Jacobs, #1) by Jackie May Don't Rush Me (whole series is fun)
A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas A Court of Thorns and Roses (or basically anything Sarah J. Maas has written)
Edenbrooke (Edenbrooke, #1) by Julianne Donaldson Edenbrooke

It seems most teams have posted their recommendations in a post on their team-thread and just linked to that one. It might be the easiest solution for us as well=) Some of the other teams have posted other teams' recommendations as well at the top of their thread, is that something you want us to do as well? If not, one can just look at the other team-threads whenever you need a recommendation=)

message 64: by Silje (last edited Jun 09, 2020 12:33PM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments I haven't played Wheel-a-thon more than once before, so I needed to read the rules several times before I understood everything (still not sure if I got it all=P). But Cat from another team has explained it really well; hopefully, she doesn't mind me sharing it here (you can also read it in their thread: Round Ireland with a fridge)

We read books of 160pages+ to spell out our word (see also the RULES). We have two weeks to spell out our word as many times as possible, and get points for how long each book is!
EVERY book we read MUST be part of the spell-it-out.

In addition, we can get points for 10 books with relevant tags for our wheel slice (tags, not MPG (main page genre))
Finding books with tags is a TEAM endeavor - it's 10 for the whole team, not each.

Individually we can also fill out books against the task list we have. Everyone has the same list, but it is an INDIVIDUAL endeavor - we can all read a book with a yellow cover and claim the points. You can only read for each task once.

Finally! There are also points available for taking part in the BOM discussions. This is entirely OPTIONAL, but if the book appeals do consider reading it, or even volunteering to write a set of discussion questions.

Are you guys ok with using a planning sheet? It will allow us to switch books around if necessary and have a better overview of things such as optional letters, tasks, etc.

Whenever you've finished a book, this is the information we need:
- Book title and the link to the book edition you read
- Page count for the version you read, or default version if you listened to an audiobook
- Finished Date
- Which letters the book fit and why (character, title, author, etc.)
- If it fits one of our TAGS
- Which TASK it fits (every book doesn't have to fit a task)

Yes, I can tell and that's really wonderful! It's awful to be in a district you don't care for and that doesn't serve your children well.

I've checked out 2 books from Overdrive that just came off my holds list so those will be my first 2. Both happen to be re-reads. Throne of Glass & Between Shades of Gray

My witches and wizards are sharing recommendations for everyone to use during our voyage wanted to invite you all to take a look here and we would love it if you would come over and share your thoughts with us. No matter what if its good or bad we would like to hear your thoughts on the book you picked.

Hi everyone!

I've ventured out from Middle Earth to invite you all round whenever you would like. It's never more than 5 minutes from a meal (speaking of which is it time for lunch yet...).

We've got a lovely selection of recommendations here to tempt you all and would love it if you stick around to tell us what you thought.

Mine FINALLY opened this week for curbside service - I'm picking up my order this evening. I only got two books Tweet Cute by Emma Lord and Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson … I did subscribe to Scribd since they've been closed and have been enjoying that, but I still prefer a physical book in my hands. And I've purchased more books since March than I care to admit... I am dying for my library to re-open fully. I miss browsing so much.

ETA- those are likely the two books I'm going to start with once we get going in a few days!

The libraries here opened last week, and I could finally go get the books I had ordered=)

I also use Scribd, I listen to a lot of audiobooks and I think they have a decent selection.

message 78: by Kim (new)

Kim | 68 comments Hello, everyone! Sorry I am late to the introductions; I saved the spreadsheets days ago and forgot checking in was needed!

I'm Kim. I live in Massachusetts but was born and raised in Philly, Pennsylvania. I work in Human Resources at a grocery store, so I've been working (and reading) as usual. My favorite genres are historical fiction, fantasy, and mystery/thriller. I'm not opposed to trying new styles though, like the occasional romance haha.

I've been on GR for about 8 years; just started joining challenge groups about a year ago. Quidditch was my first NBRC task last weekend and it was thrilling. This will be my first time with Wheel but Silje's communication from Cat seems fairly straight forward.

I had planned to do the BR for Five Feet Apart . I also have the following for BR in another group:
Throne of Glass
Thirteen Rising
Evelyn, After
The Queen's Assassin
Legendary

Welcome aboard=)

It's great that you're joining the BOM, I'm considering doing so myself=) It is only the BOMs in the NBRC-group that will earn extra points in this Challenge, but hopefully the books from the other BOMs or BRs will fit a letter in our Word=)

As long as your books fit a letter in our word each round (CELEBRATION in round 1) you are good to go. The criteria are in the rules. If the book fit a task or a tag as well, that is great, but it doesn't have to. The task list will be on our planning sheet, but it is already available on the team sheet as well=)

My library normally allows us 25 books from our local branch as well as 10 from Link+, but if you lose a Link+ books it's $115. Anyway I normally have a ton of books from the library but I had just gotten back from a month in Florida and took all my books back (the head librarian extended all my books while on vacay) so I only got the few that I had already ordered. I've had the books since prior to March 19 when we went on lock down. It's one time I really wish I had my limit of books! But then again I have six bookshelves, 3 really large ones and 3 medium ones and I have a lot I've not read yet. LOL

Is everyone ready??

message 88: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganraex) | 1031 comments That planning sheet is beautiful! Well done Silje <3

I think I am going to start with Red Rising (Red Rising Saga, #1) by Pierce Brown It's a reread but it has taken me so long to get around to reading the next book in the series I have completely forgotten what happens so I need to read it again haha.
It is tagged space too so bonus points :D

message 89: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments I’m wondering how we should go about picking our first book or two. Are we first trying to spell out CELEBRATION? Should we “claim” letters or hold off until we’re finished reading? Do we have a plan?

Oh my gosh, I do that all the time! I will even go back and read my own reviews and not remember what I had even written! Sometimes my own reviews remind me but if too much time goes by (and it often does) I lose the continuity of the books meshing together.

What would you rather do? Claim letters first or wait until you've read them? I'm open to both strategies :)

Haha, that sounds quite familiar. Instead of a typical bookshelf, I have three quite long shelves on one of my walls. I recently decided to organize my books into read/not read (my way of trying to save money by reading the books I have, rather than buying new ones). I ended up with one shelf of read books and two with books not yet read=P=P

Should we try adding the books we plan to read straight away? If we always know what letter people are currently reading for or plan to read for next, it might be easier to see which other letters we need to complete more words. But if you like to plan 10 books ahead, it might be best if only the first 2-3 of those are on the sheet at once=) I can add a Status-column if that is something you want?

We repeat CELEBRATION as many times as possible these two weeks, but we can only have ONE incomplete word at the end of the round. Ashleigh and I will switch books around if necessary, which is why it is important that you add which other letters your book might for as well.

I is the only "tough" letter we have in CELEBRATION, but we need 2 E's for every repetition, so be on the look-out for those two letters especially=)

message 96: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 735 comments Yeah I think it might be best to put a couple books on that we know we'll be reading straightaway and not put every book we've got planned.

I'm gonna check my shelves and see if I've got any Is and Es that I can get to quickly. As Silje has requested, can we all please do the same?

message 97: by Silje (new)

Silje (sikna) | 1443 comments Those who plan to join BOMs this month can add which book and their name to the "BOM" tab in the planning sheet. Remember that you have to participate and answer the questions to get extra points or volunteer to write a set of questions and get selected to do it=)

message 98: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments I think the other thing that is helpful is when you post a book or add it to the planning sheet, put all the letters it would work for, so if between author, characters, title it could work for several, let us know. Then when we fill the word to turn in we can shuffle books as needed.
