Mariab | 3059 comments I didn't make it too far in Anne of Green Gables. The English seems to be a little funny... to mexat least

message 402: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I'm so happy that people are enjoying Anne of Green Gables this month! One of my childhood favorites.

@Mariab - the book was written over 100 years ago, and English was a little funny back then! Hehe.

Thanks Cherie. The writing got to me - almost the whole book was in incomplete sentences. As in. What the. Was he. She was so. Or what.

That technique wore me out.

How is the book/audio version of Fried Green Tomatoes? That is one of my all-time favorite movies and I've been wanting to read the book since I discovered it existed a few years ago.

message 409: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm reading Under the Skin for the toppler. I think I'm liking it, but is not at all what I was expecting. All I knew about the book going in is that it is about a woman abducting hunky hitchhikers in Scotland. I've never heard of a female serial killer so I thought it would be a fascinating read. It is fascinating, but not what I thought it was going to be. Its sort of like taking a sip of Coke and discovering its Dr. Pepper instead. Still tasty, but surprising. (I have no idea why I used coke and dr pepper as examples, I don't drink sodas. lol)

message 410: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm reading A Shot in the Bark: A dog park mystery for the toppler. It is also a book that is part of a series. I am about halfway through and not sure if I like it or not. It is just ok so far.

message 411: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Nothing can be Dr. Pepper :-) A Shot in the Bark, sounds funny, is it? I'm reading Fairest book 3. Five in the Lunar Chronicles, I find these books quite a little treat. :-) ;-)

I just purchased Fairest. I'm hoping to get to it fairly soon. I find it to be a fun series. :) I look forward to seeing what you think of this installment.

Stephanie I am now about 70% through and it has gotten better but not great. There are some funny, cute moments :)

message 414: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Jackaby for the toppler. I only gave it 2 stars because I really didn't enjoy it much at all. The main character was quite good but the rest just wasn't for me.

I am now starting The Daughter of Time for the toppler and this month's group read.

Berit | 641 comments I just finished Fairest, it was very good. I always like the back stories :-) if you were a fan of the series it is a definite must read. Now I'm reading Tangled a contemporary romance, never read anything by this author before so, we shall see :-)

message 417: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Finished reading A Shot in the Bark. It was cute and fast read. I had a hard time getting into it but the last third of the book I couldn't put down because I wanted to know who the killer was. It is part of a series so now I need to keep reading the series, lol!

I have Fairest on my Nook ready to read, but haven't fit it in yet. I have enjoyed the other books in the series. Too bad this is not a full series book, but I am dying to read it.
Fairest

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Blood Prophecy in the wee hours this morning. I enjoyed all six of these stories. Definately on the YA side of things, but great dialogue and fun stories. The author has also written several short stories, but I have only read one or two. They are definately not the Twilight vampires. I think the last one almost could have been divided into two. It was much longer than the others but dragged in places. Lots of locations and scene changes but the author managed to wrap it all up and I was happy to be finished with it.

I started Bel Canto for my second toppler book.

It's not bad. The narrator is an older woman, and as story jumps around, I don't always catch the transition if I'm not paying close attention, because she is always Ninny Threadgoode to me. As the story is mostly her recollection and memory that kind of works...in the beginning it helped to have watched the movie, to follow along when Evelyn took the storytelling reigns. It keeps the same fun, quirky charm that the movie has...this is a movie my mom and I would watch together, so it contains fond memories.

Stephanie I just finished Thereby Hangs a Tail by Spencer Quinn for the toppler! It is also part of a series :) I liked this book much more than the 1st. I just love the dog Chet as the main character and I love that he is the one telling the story :) I'm such a sucker for story told by the dog :)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Daughter of Time for the toppler and February's group read. I have a real interest in Richard III so was really looking forward to reading it and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a bit slow to get going and I would have liked the characters to be a bit more fleshed out than they were but I would still recommend it. I gave it 4 stars.

Tomorrow I will start on my fourth toppler book, Glimpse, which is meant to have been inspired by the classic poem 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes.

No thanks needed!
I had recently develop a interest in the history of the young Princes. When I was visiting the Tower of London I hear for the first time the story about the boys imprisoned in the tower and saw their (supposedly) chambers (I was a little surprised and slightly guilty of not having know, being a bit of history-freak as I am). I learned later that their fate was an ongoing theme for art and literature in english world.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Ugh, Kristie, I have been giving the vampires a lot of mind share lately. How are the werewolves in this series? Are the stories good? Yes, there is such a mystery surrounding the fate of the Princes in the Tower. You can certainly see why they inspire art, literature etc. There are several theories as to what could have happened but I doubt we will ever know for sure, unless some new, definitive evidence is discovered at some point. I love the Tower of London. It's such an interesting building with a great history. The 'graffiti' on some of the walls made by some of its former prisoners is amazing!

message 435: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I really liked that one, Berit.
I love the sense of peace that I get from reading these stories. Mma R. makes me feel good. I love her pride in her father and her country and in traditional things. I love her sense of humor and her patience. I love her "traditionally built" sense of self. :0)

Yes, soothing is a better description for them.
I work for Intel Corp and most of my days are NOT soothing, that is for sure.

I have lived in my house for over 35 years. I cannot even imagine moving although a lot of "stuff" really needs to be gotten rid of. There are times I admire people for their ability to move and not hold onto things. I cannot fathom down-sizing like Sarah and her partner have done moving into their canal boat.

I loved that one too, Cherie. I keep meaning to read more of her stuff but haven't yet.

message 439: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4529 comments I know what you mean, Cherie, about holding on to stuff. We live in the house my husband grew up in and it's full of generations of stuff, grandmothers, in-laws, ours, even a hugh bible I found in the attic left there by the previous owners about 60 years ago. It's a good thing we have a full attic and basement for storage. I get overwhelmed just thinking about getting rid of some of it. I don't know if I could do what Sarah has done to live on the canal boat. That would be quite a purge.

I'm enjoying this series. It has a little of everything: werewolves, ghosts, vampires, fey. No zombies though. I like that the stories have a bit of a mystery to them. So, it's not just a pure fantasy. You're trying to figure out who the murderer is or something like that. Plus, it is set in our world, not a fantasy world. I wasn't thrilled that there was a bit of a love triangle, but it's not the center of the story and I think that's going to get resolved soon.

message 441: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Believe me we had a real purge of stuff and it wasn't easy - tears have been shed getting rid of some stuff. We've lived in a one bedroom flat for the last ten years so have limited amounts of stuff to some extent and most of our furniture was either second hand or cheap ikea so there was no attachments to things there. some stuff has gone to our families for storing so we've not got rid of everything. I struggled with getting rid of the books and cds and my partner with his records and tapes. I sold the books I'd read and have kept the others which I need to prioritise reading. I did go and spend £50 on my kindle books after this to make up for it and I'm feeling another spree coming on. all the music stuff we're still not sure on because of sentimentality but in the end I'm sure we'll just get the digital versions. Now it's gone, it feels liberating to be free of our stuff. A lot of our things went to young couples so it was nice to see it all being reused and looked after hopefully.

I really liked my one actually. Succubus Blues for those of you who are too Toppler focused (including myself).

Majority of it set in the real real world, just with fantastical elements/backstory to it. A few sexy times. Variety of magical creatures. No zombies.

It's the book they bought the rights to, and then made Lost Girl. The only similarity between the TV show and the book are: the main character is a succubus; and there are two factions. The. End.
