Definitely Harry Potter..at least the first 2 I would think are good for that age(I dont have kids though so I may be wrong, lol)
So I just picked up Twilight's Dawn for the serial killer challenge. So far it's pretty, meh. A few summers ago, I just devoured the first three books. The rest of the series is a bunch of short stories, at least to the best of my recollection. This book is much the same, and it doesn't help that I'm reading it on the heels of a Dune book, which is so compelling, I couldn't put the thing down all weekend - even when I got home at 1:30 in the morning on Sunday (Dune Messiah that is).
Berit - How about Redwall? I loved it as a kid and devoured the series. It's nearly doubled since then, though, woah!
Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming! I want to find a book I will read and he will read and then we can discuss it.☺️
Finished up A thousand splendid suns and for some reason I've been on a reread or relisten kick lately. Some of the better audio books I've listened to that were good enough for muktiple listens. So I went for a second time throuvh Monster Hunter Internationalwhich I'll need to go through the whole series now. They're such great listens and I need to read #5 to kill the series. Just taking the long way about.

I might pitch it to my grandson after I check it out. He is reading Eragon, but I think it is way over his head. He won't admit it but he has not made much progress for weeks now.
I finished reading Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas and have to say I was somewhat disappointed with it. It all fell a bit flat and in places I was a bit bored with it. A quick read though. Gave it 3 stars. So hopefully onwards and upwards I'm going to start reading The Farm by Tom Rob Smith. I haven't read any other work by this author but I know he wrote Child 44 which I've heard is good, so fingers x'd for this one!
Just finished reading The Invention of Wings. This was a great book and encourage all to read it. Now I am starting The Narrow Road to the Deep North. This book has been on my shelf a while and I am looking forward to reading this book.
Reading, mightier than the Sword, a Clifton Chronicles book.I really like this series, I will kill it after I finish this book :-)
Berit, I have two sons, both were relutctant readers. Although the younger one is now a reader.
Middle school age books:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid- it has pictures. Books for older kids tend to not have pictures and that's why my sons lost interest in reading, in part.
Rick Riordan's series
Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, the first book is The Bad Beginning
And my two boys loved the DK Eyewitness books. Pictures, plus non-fiction.
I've been sitting in a beech since Sunday and managed to finish 4 books, not terribly long ones though. 3 of them were from The Chroncles of Narnia (books I never read as a kid) plus The Collectors. I just got around to reading the thread and the discussions over the last few days. We certainly are an interesting group. I like that we can have these honest discussions about reading habits, preferences, families, hobbies, lifestyles and anything else that comes to mind.
Hi Roz! I hope you had fun at the beach in the sun and sand while you were reading. I have only read one of the Narnia books. How did you like the others? I have a huge volume that contains all of the books and I am going to read the rest of them for my series challenge - when I get to them.
I do not think I will be adding The Camel Club series to my list. Political mysteries, huh? What will they think up next?
I wasn't blown away with the first book of camel club I suppose I'd read the next if it was in a sale to see if I like it better
Just started reading The Great Zoo of China for a Netgalley review. Still listening to The Secret Keeper too.
I like the Narnia series and only have one book to go. Not great reading but for the genre and age level, pretty good. For kids, I think there are some valid life lessons here.I quite like the Camel Club series although I don't usually enjoy political thrillers. I can't explain it. I'm on my 3rd installment.
I'm finding a lot more series to add to my growing list. My son even suggested one, Southern Reach Trilogy. Has anyone read that one? He said it's quite good sci fi.
I finished Crestmont which I considered to be a major snoozefest. I'm not sure what to start. I've got two buddy reads coming up March 1 (one is audiobook, the other paperback.) Maybe I can find a short fast ebook to wedge in.
Camel Club is in my TBR and I plan to try it this year. Political thrillers sounds interesting to me. I would say not so different from the newspapers...

Sandra, it is a really good series. I didn't even think it was overly political. I just really enjoyed the characters.
I finished How Green Was My Valley. I rated it 4 stars because I liked it but I didn't love it. The writing was beautiful and the story was poignant and offered an interesting insight into the Welsh mining communities of the early 20th century but I found it to be very slow at times and it didn't always hold my attention as a result. Despite this, I still largely enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.I am starting a buddy read on March 1st so I need something fairly short to read before then. I have decided to go for Tinder which has been on my TBR for a while.
Roz wrote: "My son even suggested one, Southern Reach Trilogy. Has anyone read that one? He said it's quite good sci fi. "Bought it last month, haven't had time to start it yet.
Roz- I have read book 1 of southern reach trilogy. I gave it 3 stars at the time but I often think back on it and am tempted to upgrade my rating to 4. I have the other two to read. Stephen King blurbed it so I was expecting it to be scary or gory in some way but it wasn't. perhaps my expectations with this endorsement influenced my reading experience.
After 14 days, I have finally finished The Book Thief! I really really enjoyed this book! I saw the movie first and I am glad I did because if not then I may have not liked the movie as much :) there was a part that I was disappointed in mainly because I liked how it played out in the movie better :)I definitely would recommend this book!
Glad you liked the book Stephanie. I read it about a year ago and rated it 5 stars. Still need to see the movie!I finished Life After Life. I'll start Room for the group read next.
Glad to hear that you liked The Book Thief, even after watching the movie, Stephanie. I also saw the movie, but haven't had chance to read the book yet, though it has been on my TBR for quite a while now. I was concerned that seeing the movie first might have ruined some parts of the book for me.
Is the voting done? Did Room when?I really really want to read that one. Glad you finished your book Stephanie, I didn't see the movie or read the book, but I will, eventually!☺️
Hope you both like the book!! Next up I'm going to knock off a book on my kindle, Unleashed: A Sydney Rye Novel #1

Glad you finished your book Stephanie, I didn't see the movie or read the book, but I will, eventually!☺️"I checked a few hours ago and the poll was still open (it closes today though) and Room was on top. But even if it doesn't win, I'm still going to read it :) You know that you can read any book within the theme to get a badge right, not just one of the two winning books?
Berit wrote: "Is the voting done? Did Room when?I really really want to read that one. Glad you finished your book Stephanie, I didn't see the movie or read the book, but I will, eventually!☺️"The voting ends today (26th). Looks like Room is leading with 8 votes. In the Woods is following with 7 votes.
Usually the top two books are selected for the "official" group read. Even if it does not win, you can still read it under the "theme" selection. ;0)

Lexx is reading these at the moment and really enjoying them. He's listening to the audiobook, and has said he probably shouldn't have listened to all three in a row (in the middle of the third books) but overall he really likes it.
I'm reading In the Woods for the same reason. I have been meaning to read it for ages, and I'm sure others will too if it's not the official read.
Rusalka, let me know what Lexx thinks once he finishes all 7 books (if he does). Although it's usually listed as fantasy and Christian fiction is pretty far down its genre list, Christian themes play a major role throughout the series: good deeds, good vs evil, truth vs falsehood, sacrifice, redemption, punishment, greed, vanity, pride, humility, etc. Overall I enjoyed the series, but I read it more as a fantasy series rather than a Christian allegory.
I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe when I was in 4th grade. It was a book we were reading together as a class. I'd always been a reader, but this is the book that sent me into overdrive. It's the first book I fell in love with so much I just couldn't stop reading it. It also sparked my life-long love of fantasy stories. In college I took a CS Lewis concentration, and while 98% of it focused on his apologetics and middle-ages studies, we did read this book also. The biggest bonus is we got the full Narnia set for cheap and I finally completed the set in a few days.
I've loved CS Lewis ever since.

I skimmed the last half of the book. I didn't care for any of the characters. The whole Gracie backstory was implausible.
I'm going to flip open the first few pages of Walk Gently This Good Earth and see if it has the same magic as I Heard the Owl Call My Name.
I finished Life After Life and now I think I will sqeeze in Eleanor & Park before I kick off my March books.
Roz wrote: "Rusalka, let me know what Lexx thinks once he finishes all 7 books (if he does). Although it's usually listed as fantasy and Christian fiction is pretty far down its genre list, Christian themes pl..."oops sorry. I meant the Southern Reach Trilogy.
I love Narnia, he does not.
Berit wrote: "I have a question for all you readers I want to find a book for my 12-year-old son and I to read together. He is not an advanced reader, so take that into consideration. I would appreciate any and ..."Neil Gaiman has many books for young readers. Some have been made into movies. I particularly enjoyed The Graveyard Book. I've read it 3 times (audio, to myself, and out loud to my hubby.) Coraline is another I can think of. Fortunately, the Milk and Odd and the Frost Giants were also fun.
Oh, and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Don't be fooled by how big this book is. It's mostly fantastic pictures. Great movie, too. The movie was just called "Hugo."
I read the Southern Reach Trilogy and thought it was pretty deep and thought-provoking; creepy in places. Not sure a 12-year old would be up to it.Almeta just suggested the 39 Clues series, the first one being The Maze of Bones. And what about the Goosebumps series?
I just finished reading The Queen of Bedlam in the Matthew Corbett series. I really like this series and have the remaining books at the library to pick up. If you've not read McCammon, you are missing out. Swan Song is still my favorite of his.I also finished the 3rd Merrily Watkins book: A Crown of Lights and loved it. So suspenseful and a page-turner. Ordered the next in that series.
Now I'm reading A Murder on the Appian Way which is a great Roman series. Gordianus the Finder is a great solver of mysteries.
Travis of NNY wrote: "Recently finished Bethany's Sin another of McCammons books. And another good one."Excellent, Travis!
