FYI this is a website wide issue, just checked GR help seems like it is something they are working on. All my notifications had been off for 2 days.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9972 comments Walk the Wire Walk the Wire (Amos Decker #6) by David Baldacci by David Baldacci

In this 6th book in the 'Amos Decker' series, the detective's investigation of a bizarre murder in North Dakota unveils diabolical wrongdoing. The book works well as a standalone.

Engaging thriller. 3.5 stars

Hello fellow group members. After launching a "contact us" about the lack of notifications to the powers that be at Goodreads, I received the following message:

"Hi Nancy,

Thanks for writing in. Goodreads has temporarily turned off email notifications and push notifications. These notifications include new messages, new friend additions, new followers, new group additions, and any other event, comment, or activity notifications you've signed up to receive in your Account Settings.

We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and will provide updates directly on Goodreads Help about when we'll reinstate email and push notifications. Please feel free to visit Help for more information or contact us."

So who the heck knows when we'll be back up and running, so please continue to post what your're currently reading, or to visit any other discussion thread you are involved in until this is over.

I feel like I'm in withdrawal, not being notified, but I'll continue to check in here and there to see what you all are doing.

Amos Walker #27, OK to read as a stand-alone. I've been a fan of Estleman's Valentino series but this is the first Walker I've read and I really liked it. Plot moves right along and I liked the 2 main characters. 4 stars.

I'm going to (quickly) read The Black Cat by Poe for another GR group and then probably jump into Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. I rewatched the movie a couple of months ago and decided to finally read the book.

GR is working on notifications and has temporarily turned them off. Damn well better be only temporary! It’s been three days now and it’s driving me crazy. No way to know if someone has commented on a review without checking each book individually.

Less online time + more reading of good fiction = greater happiness

I've just added that book to my small to-read list and will probably buy it for my mum as a Christmas present too.

"greater happiness" -- I miss knowing what's going on with my GR friends. That's a bit sad, actually. I pop in and out of facebook, tweet or read tweets rarely, but most of my online time is spent here.

Araych | 676 comments A Private Cathedral A Private Cathedral (Dave Robicheaux #23) by James Lee Burke by James Lee Burke

Dave Robicheaux #23, not really recommended as a stand-alone. There has been some criticism of Burke as writing the same novel again and again, and there is some justification there. This book has some supernatural bits that really don't fit, and it has the feel of the ending of the series, but, given all that, Burke's ability of describe the weather, the environment, and the emotional interior of his characters is still absolutely stunning. This is an amazing book by a world-class author. 5 stars, highly recommended.

Nils Shapiro #4, OK to read as a stand-alone. Minneapolis-based PI gets hired to go out to LA to check on a wealthy couple's grandson and gets involved in the rough side of the movie business. I've been a fan of the Nils Shapiro series and in this book Goldman has produced an absolutely wonderful mystery full of heart, brains, and laughter. 5 stars, highly recommended.
