I remember that from my second year of French. I've always loved that book.
"Lorsque j'avais six ans j'ai vu, une fois, une magnifique image, dans un livre sur la ForĆŖt Vierge qui s'appelait "Histoires VĆ©cues". Ća reprĆ©sentait un serpent boa qui avalait un fauve. VoilĆ la copie du dessin."
ahhh. Brings back memories.

I'm reading and enjoying The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante. It's not crime fiction, but gripping all the same.

Squeeze Me
by Carl HiaasenCarl Hiaasen is a national treasure. Even though this book is not his best work it's still a great read and highly recommended. Featuring a female raccoon wrangler and a fat idiot addicted to his tanning machine who is the POTUS but not named Trump. 4 stars.

The Knife Throwerās WifeA friend gave me an advance reader's copy of The Knife Thrower's Wife. Since I live in Houston, I thought I would give it a try and wow, I could not put it down. Really enjoyed the fast pace and dark humor. The knife thrower's treatment of the protagonist, Julia, gave me pause for self reflection and a different point of view of many relationships observed from afar. The mystery from the author's artist mind added a new level of texture that I have not encountered before. I really liked the Houston scene of unique places that I have heard about and are still around to visit. Sheila McGraw's The Knife Thrower's Wife is worth your time and 5 stars.
Strictly not a thriller... but there is a lot of crime in this book ;-)The Evening and the Morning, Ken Follett

A King of Infinite Space
by Tyler DiltsPolice procedural set in Long Beach, California, my previous home town and one of the finest cities in the country. This is Dilts first published novel and it shows a lot of promise, although I had figured out the killer about half way through. I liked it and will read the next one in the series; 3 stars.
Now starting IN THE MORNING I'LL BE GONE by Adrian McKinty, the third book in his detective Sean Duffy series.
A Death in Vienna
by Daniel SilvaIn this 4th book in the 'Gabriel Allon' series, the Israeli agent is on the trail of a Nazi war criminal who's hidden his identity for years. The book can be read as a standalone.
Good thriller. 3.5 stars

Nancy wrote: "So I finished The Mystery of Henri Pick, and it was lighter fare for me than normal, but there was indeed a mystery to be had although the novel was not truly what I'd consider crim..."Thanks, Nancy. I'm going to add to my TBR list -- sometimes something a little lighter and different is just what is called for. Good luck choosing your next read. ( I can recomend Candace Fox's Crimson Lake series if you've not tried it.)
Starting
Imperfect Women by Araminta HallThis excellent addition to the very strong Australian fiction scene got āāāā.8 from me.

Thanks for the suggestion! Right now I'm still mystery-free, and I'm reading Hamnet, by Maggie O'Farrell as well as Graham Greene's The Honorary Consul.

ughhhh I was persuaded to read Mrs. Dalloway I hated ever word. I think Virgnia Wolf is not for me. Nothing happened the entire book. A womans internal dialogue. was the whole book. If I wanted that I would just sit in a chair and think
Started
I probably hesitated to pick it up since I wasn't familiar with the format. I thought it was quite out there but it seems that it's not. At first I thought I would struggle with the pacing as well but now I don't think so. Excited to see how it pans out.
Devil's Waltz
by Jonathan KellermanAlex Delaware #7, OK to read as a stand-alone. 90% of the first 200 pages consist of descriptions of the symptoms and treatment plan of a sick 14 month-old baby girl. Is she not really sick? Is the mother harming her? 200 pages. I quit.
I've finished both The Honorary Consul by Graham Greene and Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. Loved the first, liked the second but not blown away.
Now reading The Discomfort of Evening, and to temper the discomfort I know I'm going to have while reading, my night time book is an old mystery novel from 1927 called Murder in the Maze by JJ Connington.

I am currently reading The Ornamental Hermit by Olivier Bosman and feel like Iāve found a hidden treasure! Iāve gone and bought the other two of the series which are in paper format (you can get them in e-book up to book 4), plus the .5 novella: I got all three at Barnes and Noble for @ $30.00. Beyond all that retail stuff, I recommend looking this one up.

I just finished The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey (Inspector Grant). This book was written in the 1951 and has been voted into a lot of lists of āBestsā: it deserves it. Our Inspector Grantālaid up in the hospitalālooks into the history of Richard III: did he kill his little nephews? Have what we learned about him through Shakespeare and history books been true? This book was so entertaining; I donāt even care about these people and I loved it.

Well, I'm intrigued enough that my copy has been moved to the physical TBR pile now, so I'll be reading it at some point in the near future.

So -- I bought the Everyman's Library edition of Ellroy's L.A. Quartet -- does anyone (in the US) want the four novels I'm replacing? I'm happy just to give them to you if you want them.
