Lana Kortchik grew up in two opposite corners of the Soviet Union - the snow-white Siberian town of Tomsk and the golden-domed Ukrainian capital, Kiev. At the age of sixteen, she moved to Australia with her mother. Lana and her family live on the Central Coast of NSW, where it never snows and is always summer-warm, even in winter. She loves books, martial arts, the ocean and Napoleonic history. Her short stories have appeared in many magazines and anthologies. She was the winner of the Historical Novel Society Autumn 2012 Short Fiction competition and the runner-up of the 2013 Defenestrationism Short Story Contest. Her first novel, The Story of Us, was published by HQ Digital/Harper Collins in December 2018. To find out more, please visit h ...more

Hi D.P.,

Thank you for your question. I queried a few agents and publishers but I think I submitted my manuscript too early and it wasn't ready. I received constructive feedback from some of the agents and a couple of them mentioned that my manuscript was a little too long for a debut novel.

So I took a step back, did another round of editing and asked a few friends to give me their feedback. I reduced the novel from 120,000 words to 95,000 and queried again. Endeavour Press were the first to reply and after some research I signed a contract with them.

Thanks,

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your question. I am not working on a sequel yet but I am planning one. I want to write another book from the point of view of a different character. Many people who read my novel commented that they would like to find out what happens to her. And I realised there was an interesting story there, I just don't know what it is yet. Can't wait to start researching the sequel, just as soon as my two works in progress are finished.

At the moment I am working on a middle grade novel set in London during the Blitz and a suspense novel about a woman who loses her memory due to an accident. She returns home to find dark secrets about her life and loved ones.

Thanks,

Lana(less)
