In this 18th book in the 'V.I. Warshawski' series, the Chicago private detective heads for Kansas to look for two missing persons. The book can be read as a standalone.

Lots going on in this story. 3 stars

Araych | 676 comments Dark Star Dark Star (Night Soldiers, #2) by Alan Furst by Alan Furst

A tale of espionage, told in the form of a semi-diary by Andre Szara, taking place in 1937 in Moscow, Paris, Berlin, Prague and elsewhere. Szara is a Russian journalist co-opted into the spy game and this is his story. I am a big fan of Furst's novels but I think this one is not his best because it is so long and so complicated, with a list of names like a Russian novel, which it sort of is. I love the way Furst writes, the language is very evocative and gives a great feel for time and place but this one only gets 3 stars. Good, but not great.

In this 8th book in the 'Abe Lieberman' series the detective has a lot going on in his professional and personal life, including negotiating with gangs and planning a grandson's Bar Mitzvah.

The book can be read as a standalone, but knowledge of the characters is a bonus.

Charlie Parker #5. I read this one out of order and it was a mistake. Recommend the series be read in order -- people die. That aside, this wasn't one of Connolly's best. Some outstanding scenes and descriptions though. 3 stars.
