Mortimer Angel #4, OK to read as stand-alone. Somebody slashes to top of Mort's (don't call me Mortimer) girlfriend's convertible and leaves a human skull. That kind of thing can mess up your whole afternoon. Fun, fast-moving mystery, I liked it a lot.

A Judgement in Stone by Ruth Rendell
Rating: 4 stars

and I started reading (don't judge me):

Origin by Dan Brown

Now from my local library

This true crime book is about Robert Coombes, who killed his mother when he was thirteen years old. If Robert had been hung his story would have ended there, but Robert was spared, and went on to become a respected member of society.
Very good book. 4 stars

Just finished Stephen Kings "Gunslinger" - the first part of his "opus magnum" "The Dark Tower" and already a classic. A good read with a surreal atmopshere and pictorial descriptions. I will definitely join Roland on the next part of his journey...

I read this book, and thought Summerscale added way too much extraneous stuff here that detracted from the reading. Have you read her The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher? Of the two, I thought that one was much better.

I loved this series.

Nancy at first I thought Summerscale was including too much extraneous material, and I was annoyed. But then I found that it was quite interesting to me. Sort of a twofer....true crime and history.
I haven't read The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher. Maybe I'll see if I can find it. Thanks for the suggestion. 😊

I’m in the minority, but it didn’t work for me. Here’s my two star review:

The Cold Cold Ground by Adrian McKinty. Good setting, cliched characters. Not bad but have read better stories with a similar narrative. Rating - 3/5

Unspeakable Acts: True Tales of Crime, Murder, Deceit, and Obsession
by: Sarah Weinman
An interesting collection that somehow falls short of its goals. My full review:

Good series. 🙂

Bryant and May #2, OK to read as stand-alone. 2nd volume in the Peculiar Crimes Unit series, set in England. An elderly lady has drowned in her otherwise-dry basement and the Peculiar Crimes Unit is called in. Very entertaining entry in the series -- very English, very fun.

The Night Swim
by: Megan Goldin
Well-done thriller with timely topics. My full review:

It's a great series, wonderful characters, setting and food.. :)

In this 12th book in the 'Kate Burkholder' series, the Chief of Police learns about serious corruption in the Columbus, Ohio Police Department. There are flashbacks to Kate's early career as a police officer, which is interesting.
The book can be read as a standalone.
Good thriller. 3.5 stars

Dek Elstrom #6, OK to read as stand-alone but I recommend reading a couple of previous entries first. Elstrom in a PI in Chicago and a job he takes from a mysterious client leads to complicated and deadly political intrigue. This is an excellent straight-ahead mystery (with a little humor) with great quirky characters and a world-class complicated plot. 4 stars, highly recommended.

I'll be interested in and will go back to your thoughts on this book once I've read it. I preordered it some time ago and I'm looking forward to it.

I've finished but am slowly rereading the extraordinary The Rings Of Saturn; just about finished with Su Tong's Shadow of the Hunter and past the midpoint of Riot and Remembrance: America's Worst Race Riot and Its Legacy by James S. Hirsch.
After I finish those the plan is to read two crime novels --
Seven Years of Darkness by You-Jeong Jeong and Death, Discovery and Carne Asada by Thomas Curran, who wrote this book while walking across the US to raise money (over 20 thousand dollars!!!) for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.

When a fifteen-year-old girl goes missing, her family falls apart. Then 10 years later, the girl's mysterious vanishing is slowly solved.
Okay psychological thriller. 3 stars
