I didn't realise that... I've only just signed up & tried to d/l 1 book; it looked legit and d/l is DRM instead of open epub. I didn't really look into it much, I guess the use of 'library' was rather deceptive.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments Very! I just remember a recent twitter thread with John Scalzi on it after NPR promoted open library and the author uproar

message 103: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments I've been using OpenLibrary for a while, even before their National Emergency Library thing... I have to say I'm quite torn re how it's being managed at the moment, but it looked perfectly legit to me before the emergency... There was a waitlist just like in any normal library, so only one copy could be lent at a time. The books are scanned, but you cannot keep them, as the loan expires after 14 days, and since what you actually get is an .acsm file which you need to open with Adobe Digital Editions, it will no longer be readable after the loan expires. I guess if you're tech-savvy enough you can work around that, but I think the vast majority of people (like myself) don't have either the knowledge or the desire to do that, because that would be piracy indeed.

message 104: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments But scanned ebooks is the issue - that means someone bought a book scanned it; turned it into an adobe pdf - not hard to do and uploaded it - that right there is author’s issues with it - I know the argument is made well they don’t get paid for library borrows but in general library copies (print and ebook) are must costly than what you/I pay in order to give them some compensation

message 105: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) | 1513 comments As far as I understand it, they are supposed to be physical books actual libraries bought and afterwards scanned for OpenLibrary. So the book has in fact been bought, and if you limit the loan and set up a waitlist like a normal library would, then it should be legit. The problem arises when they loan the same scanned book to several people at once, which is in fact quite shady. I've read a few articles about this, and I have to admit I'm still unsure where I stand. Anyway, I'm Italian so I'm not familiar with US copyright law at all, which means my understanding of the whole thing might be wrong.

*sighs* I started reading a historical fiction about a Jewish woman directly in the aftermath of WWII so felt a little more interested in your suggestion, Dee, but found I can't source it :/ Not on AU KU unfortunately.

A Game of Thrones
Wolf Hall - i'm on the library wait list for this - so it may be a couple months (right now prediction is 10 weeks) - so it would be a future read

I've read GoT, Dee, but willing to give Wolf Hall a go. Just tap me when you're ready.

Actually... let me check if there's a waiting list for it.

ETA: a couple of copies appear to be available for me to borrow without any waiting list.

@Susan, just give me a tap when you got The Toll (Arc of a Scythe #3) from the library - I own a copy so can do anytime.

No kidding! But it's interesting, I didn't mind it like I do some cliff-hangers. It didn't seem contrived, I guess. Some really annoy me, as though the only point of a book was to get you hooked on the next one. I didn't feel that way about this one.

I wasn't sure whether to post this question on the Thunderhead thread or here, so I'm doing both.

Tien & Stacey,
I just received a notice that I can borrow the digital edition of The Toll. What did you decide about if/when to start it? Because if it's soon, I'm in. My loan will only be for 3 weeks, and I have 3 days to either check it out or let someone go ahead of me in line.

However, if you want to take this slowly, I can try to fit it in :)

I think I'll let it go for now. It's so much more fun to read with others. My next turn should come around soon, since I stay at the top of the list.

Does that mean you've borrowed it, Dee?

How long have you got (ie. when do you want to start & finish)?

I'll be going digital and I've just checked that it's available BUT I can't seem to 'renew' on that app - so I think I only have 21 days or something...

message 142: by Dee (last edited Jul 07, 2020 08:16AM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments 21 days - I got it yesterday - I won’t be able to renew it because there is a waitlist

It’s roughly 30pgs or 5% a day - is that doable for you?

message 143: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Ok, I borrowed it this morning.

I'll do my best, Dee, as I can't renew either, as I said. I see that there are 6 parts so aim for 2 parts per week? That should bring it right to the end... though of course, if you love it, you'd probably finish in a week lol

I gtg now but will create the thread later on this morning :)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments sounds good! i started today - because i was bored (sitting in hotel room) but i likely won't finish in a week because i have like 4 big books (450+ pgs) going right now...

Wolf Hall (604pgs)
Where the Light Enters (652pgs)
The Dragon Republic (658pgs)
Dragonfly (563pgs)

europe on a ship for 10months ish for military deployment - the delay is because we are limited on transportation overseas right now

Are you sharing a room? Although... you'd have to be living on close quarters anyway on the ship...

They're paying for all your food too, of course? Gets quite expensive, isn't it, eating "out" all the time.
