we get per diem (adjusted for locality - so like a daily allowance for food etc - the base amount is $55 a day in most of the US, overseas its normally in the $120-$150 range depending on normal cost of living) - but i'm in a hotel with a kitchenette right now - so i have a hot plate and microwave - and a friend loaned me her crockpot so i can basically bank the money i'm getting right now

Lisette (illusie) | 3233 comments Dee, that's so long you have been in the hotel already! Good thing you have so many big books.

I also want to read Dragonfly. Maybe we can do a buddy read? Did you already start it?

ah, like serviced apartment then! That's good, even as I love not having to cook, I also get sick of eating out all the time lol

Yeah - the first 4 weeks was normal hotel; eating out or having food delivered; had to move hotels end of June and went to one that I knew had a small kitchen

Yes I would love to join. I haven't picked out what to read next, so can start today as well.

I've come to the top of the waiting list again for a digital copy of The Toll. Are any of you still wanting to do a buddy read of it, or shall I postpone my hold again?

message 158: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Does that mean you have to borrow now? I can't start right now, too many reads going 🤭 but maybe Sunday?

Tien wrote: "Does that mean you have to borrow now? I can't start right now, too many reads going 🤭 but maybe Sunday?" I have 3 days in which to decide. Sunday would be fine with me to start reading it.

Is it just the two of us who haven't read it already? Or someone else?

Stacey (boydsmom) | 295 comments In out for the Toll. Sorry! Somehow got myself involved in a crazy competitive challenge with very specific book criteria this summer.

Up to you, Susan, if you want to wait or go ahead :)

I'm happy to wait if you would want to join us later, Stacey. What do you think?

I told them to pass it on to the next person and let me know when it's available again. We'll see whether the timing is better for one or both of you.

I have one big book left to complete the prompt, Ahab's Wife, or The Star-Gazer. This one is about 700 pages. Is there any interested in joining me?

message 165: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Sorry, Bea, I've read that one.

message 166: by Susan (new)

Susan | 3754 comments Mod
Sorry, Bea. I have four big ones of my own left, including ones that are on my LOST list. So I need to stick with them.

message 167: by Bea (new)

Bea | 5296 comments Mod
No problem, Tien and Susan. I think I can deal with it on my own....the library copy has less than 700 pages...and I did a 973 page book on my own. (Feeling confident!)

message 168: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
You can do it, Bea!! I did this one on my own too :)

Thanks, Tien. I am awaiting it from the library, but I should have it in a day or two.

Dee & I have finished Wolf Hall and are going to proceed to the second book in the trilogy, Bring Up the Bodies, if anyone is interested in joining. The plan is to start on Sunday.

The thread is here

message 173: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (walker) | 618 comments I've already read Bringing up the Bodies, but I'd be interested in joining for Book 3 (The Mirror & the Light) if you decide to do that next.

I'm in the same boat with Joanna. Although I have one caveat...please read Bringing Up the Bodies over at least 10 days while I work on Ahab's Wife, which I started today.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
LOL - Bea, we're starting tomorrow and it will go for at least 8-10 days depending how fast the book goes. It's the shortest in the trilogy. But then, we'll have to see if Dee can still find an ebook to borrow (any reservations on book 3 for you, Dee?)

message 177: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments Book 3 is 1 of 6 copies available right now - I’ll keep an eye on it

Currently The Mirror & the Light is not available in book form for me in my local library. I haven't looked in the Augusta one. BUT...the local library has it on CD ~ 30 discs! I wonder what it would be like to do the CD edition.

message 179: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments The First Man in Rome - anyone interested? Starting September - I have first 4 books as box set but going to try book 1 first

I'll join in if I can. I'm on several waiting lists to get it, but don't wait for me if I don't get it in time. Are you planning to start right away or do it in October for the epic shelf?

Just received notification that my reserve for Rhythm of War (The Stormlight Archive #4) is ready for pick up at my library!! I'm so excited and daunted by the fact that it's 1,232 pages!!!! And I will have to start reading immediately since there'd be no renewal available (am 1st of the reserve queue).

Wondering if any is keen/can buddy read with me? Planning to pick up the book next week (on Wed)

message 188: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments sorry tien i''m not reading that series - but i feel you on the renewable - my notification of Pres. Obama's memoir came in - its like 29hrs in audiobook and max borrow is 21 days so i have to get it listened to
