Jabril (Vampires in America, #2) by D.B. Reynolds
Finished:12/1/2014
Rating:****
I'm not sure why it took me so long to read the next book in this series, but I know I will be reading the next one soon...I was left with so many unanswered questions and wanting more.....
Houston, Texas-Cowboy boots, baseball and journeys to the stars . . . right? Wrong. Because Houston is also home to Jabril Karim, one of the eight powerful Vampire Lords who control all of North America. And as Private Investigator Cynthia Leighton will soon discover, not all Vampire Lords are created equal. For Jabril is the face of evil in the new world, a vampire who values no life but his own, who enslaves those he desires, steals whatever he covets and destroys anyone who stands in his way. Running from L.A. and its seductive Vampire Lord, Raphael, Cyn sees the Houston job as a welcome refuge, a place to get away and heal her broken heart. But Texas will be no vacation. For in Jabril Karim, Cyn will confront a true enemy, one who will go to any lengths to satisfy his lusts, enrich his coffers and expand his power. Fighting for the lives of two young sisters, Cyn's journey will take her through the streets of Houston and back to L.A., where the human police are determined to bring Raphael down for the murder of one of their own. But the danger doesn't end there. For Jabril has set his sights on Cyn, and he will stop at nothing to have her.

Week 4, Roll 1
Space 22
Changeless (Parasol Protectorate, #2) by Gail Carriger
Book:
Changeless (Book #2, Parasol Protectorate)
Read: 12/2
Rating & Review: ★★★★.
Alexia Tarraboti is now Lady Maccon, living with her husband Akeldama and they are still themselves. Witty banter but definitely in love.
In this installment, something is affecting preternatural creatures to where they were losing the supernatural abilities. Never fear because Alexia is on the job, of course she has to first convince the community that she isn't the cause of the problem first.

The great thing about this series is that it isn't your typical cliche pnr story. The heroine is strong, witty, clever and a real partner to her werewolf husband. I like how they have a subtle competition in solving mysteries. They are a fun couple and I hope everything get put back to rights in book 3 because that ending was sad.

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (The Hollows, #2) by Kim Harrison (2nd in series)
Finished:12/2/14
Rating: ★★★★
Rachel Morgan is a witch working as an independent investigator and living in a church with a vampire and pixie. She accepts a case to help find a serial killer that is killing ley line witches in the city. The culprit is not who she thought it was which turns into a good mystery and she also learns some secrets along the way. This book was an entertaining read with quirky characters and better than the first book for me. I love Jenks and his kids, they are hilarious. The world of the Hollows is intriguing and I look forward to Rachel's next adventure.

The Janus Affair (Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences, #2) by Pip Ballantine The Janus Affair by Pip Ballantine (Ministry of Peculiar Occurences #2)
Finished: 03 December 2014
Rating: ****

What begins as a seemingly isolated if extremely strange occurence of a passenger disappearing in an inexplicable flash of lightning witnessed on a train journey turns out to be only one among numerous such occurences: Suffragists are vanishing without a trace, leaving behind stunned witnesses with electrical burns, and the cases are buried in the Archives with barely any attempt at investigation. Sure enough, archivist Wellington Books and his partner, disgraced former field agent Eliza Braun, begin their own investigation, leading them on a merry chase through suffragists' meetings and the London underworld to stumble on a dangerous and ambitious plot they will do their utmost to foil. Meanwhile, a former lover of Eliza's from New Zealand is in town, sparking some unexpected pangs of jealousy on Welly's part... A delightful steampunk romp, great fun with great characters in a fast-paced adventure that is a joy to read from start to finish.

Without a doubt the darkest and most intense book to date in an already dark and intense series. The final pieces in Orion's plan of conquest are almost in place, and Rylee and her allies must stand and fight against ever greater odds, facing death at every step. The war is far from done claiming the lives of those standing at Rylee's side, and one will pay the ultimate sacrifice as long foretold in prophecy... (view spoiler) Impossible to put down, and without a doubt one of the best books in the series so far. Can't wait for the one to come out!

Finished: 05 December 2014

I didn't find this book as gripping as Ashes (1st in series)The story became very predictable and boring... Not sure I will finish series...

The Apocalypse does not end. The Changed will grow in numbers. The Spared may not survive.

Even before the EMPs brought down the world, Alex was on the run from the demons of her past and the monster living in her head. After the world was gone, she believed Rule could be a sanctuary for her and those she’d come to love.
But she was wrong.

Now Alex is in the fight of her life against the adults, who would use her, the survivors, who don’t trust her, and the Changed, who would eat her alive.

Welcome to Shadows, the second book in the haunting apocalyptic Ashes Trilogy: where no one is safe and humans may be the worst of the monsters.

The Psy-Changeling world that Nalini Singh has created in this series is very fascinating. I really liked the dynamic between Sophia and Max. They both came from dark pasts but they overcame it and made each other stronger. I also enjoy the appearances by other familiar faces from previous books, especially Lucas and Sasha in this book. I definitely plan to continue with the series.

I wasn't thrilled by this book. It was written well, but it was just slow. I liked the Morrissey boys and I kind of liked Andrea though it took her a long time to accept Sean as he mate even though they both communicated Sean's claim on her in chapter 1 or 2.
I am not sure I will follow this series, I will read book 3 sometime in the future, but I wasn't intrigued enough by the story.

I really like this fast pace book...It left a lot of question unanswered ,making you want more...
Bluebell has spent the last twelve years of her life at Training Tech, the government-run boarding school all children are required to attend. Now that she's seventeen she is fully prepared for Incorporation; a time when females and males are allowed to mingle again, for the first time since they were toddlers. It is also the day she must endure Citizen Branding - the mandatory searing of a mark into the flesh of the left wrist of all new Citizens. O for fertile, X for infertile. The fate of every Citizen, male or female, is determined by the results.

Bluebell knows that a Citizen’s duty is to live for the glory of Concord, just as she was taught. But the frantic dreams and hazy memories that haunt her make her different, and the questions she cannot deny threaten to turn her world upside down.

I wasn't all that keen on book two when I read it last year, which is probably why it's taken me this long to pick up the next part. I'm very glad I did, though, as I enjoyed this one immensely. It's pretty much action from start to finish, as Charlie races against time on a dangerouns mission to Charbydon itself to find her sister, who is possessed by an ancient spirit with deadly plans. I also enjoyed the relationships between the characters much more here than in the last book where some of them just ticked me off all the time. With Hank's unexpected backstory explored he's actually starting to grow on me... Looking forward to the next part - it certainly promises to be interesting!

I enjoyed this installment of the Spindle Cove series. The hero, Thorne, is a tortured soul and feels unworthy of love but he and Kate are perfect for each other. I liked finding out about their mutual past. I also enjoyed the visits by the couples from the first two books in the series. It seemed like this book was not as funny as the previous books in this series, but it was still a good read. I like Tessa Dare's writing style so I will continue with this series and eventually read her other series as well.

I still haven't warmed to Jae-Min, but I love Cole's sarcastic butt. I don't love crime-mystery books, but I love Cole's dysfunctional family. There is love in this book, there's emotional drama so there is enjoyable stuff.
I had a little bit of a hard time following all the names dropped in this "who is killing the fortune teller's clients" but Cole solved it all as well as worked out his issues with Jae and his new brother.

Do you know that feeling when a book comes out that you've been eagerly awaiting ever since you devoured the last one and want to delve into the very second you get your hands on it, but simultaneously try to quell the urge to read it immediately because it's the last in the series and once you've read it it'll be over? That's how it went with me and this book. I resisted its lure quite valiantly for... hm, a whole 6 weeks. And then I couldn't wait anymore.
I fell oh-so-deeply, irrevocably in love with his series somewhere in the first chapter of The Magpie Lord, and the feeling hasn't abated a bit. Murder, mayhem, magical shenanigans and relationship trouble - a.k.a the usual - await Stephen and Lucien in their latest adventure, which as always provides delightful entertainment filled with humour and action of all kinds - including of course some delicious, steamy-hot erotic interludes between two of my favourite characters to ever walk the page. The ending is just perfect - except for the part where it is, y'know, the ending. But I was promised novellas to take the edge off the withdrawal symptoms. Where are my novellas? Why aren't they out yet? Move faster, time, I need them now!
