Week 7: Magic

Book:
Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe, #2) by Neal Shusterman by Neal Shusterman
How it Fits: Tagged Magic 4x
Date Read: 11.03.19
Rating: 4 stars

Review:
Holy crap this book!!! I had no idea going into this what it would be about and where the story would go but because I loved the first one so much, I pretty much went into it blind. I did not expect things to lead to this.

I loved how the Thunderhead became more of a character (at least that I remember). Reminded me of AIDAN from Illuminae in a way. Also loved the introduction of Grayson who was a good kid but got caught up in the Thunderhead's machinations. His breakdown thinking that the Thunderhead had abandoned him broke my heart.

Citra and Rowan have grown since the first book - I loved Citra's evolution into Scythe Anastasia, but was a little upset that we weren't getting nearly as much of Rowan as I wanted. Of course that lead to the climax and ending...

The next book can't come soon enough, and luckily it comes out this week. Need to make room for it somehow because I need to know how this ends!

Review: I think I would have loved this as a teenager (I loved most of Piers Anthony's books at that time. And I liked the idea of this book - basically Zane kills Death and has to take over (just like the Santa Clause). I liked the premise, and I liked some of the thoughts about death (although it got too philosophical for my taste at times). I didn't like all of the thoughts about women - I felt like they were chauvinist and/or teenage-boy fantasy. I think I should probably leave Anthony's books to my teenage past where I loved them, and not spoil that memory.

Sandra | 25908 comments Suzanne, I loved that series but it has been many, many years since I read it, not sure how it'd stand up now. I also loved his letters/notes at the end of each book.

message 163: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Me too - he really approached writing as a job (probably why he was so prolific) and yes, he was probably my favorite teenage author! I've clearly become grumpier or something :) I still think his ideas were brilliant.

Review: This was a kind of interesting world, and it was a fast read for the # of pages. My issue was the heroine - she was SOOO whiney and entitled. She wanted to live her own life away from the pack, which she expected daddy to pay for, as an example. She got a bit better the second half, which had more action, and she was definitely kick ass.

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments Review for alternate reality. I read Fool Moon and give it three stars. I know there is a word for it, but I can't think of it now. For thinking to main character is just too stupid to live? I know this will be unpopular,as many people live Dresden, but he annoys me. He also seems holier then thou. I apologise for my lateness in reviews, I will turn them all in tonight. I have been very suck, even went to the hospital a bit. So I have been reading at least! Read 11/8

message 171: by Nici (new)

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments For kick ass heroine I read First Grave on the Right and finished it yesterday.(11/ 13) I give it four stars. I found the book to be funny, but not overly cornet. It kept my attention and I will be continuing the series.

message 174: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments Yeah sadly Darkest Prison is too short. I don't remember the page limit - I'll try to find it. I THINK it's 200.

message 175: by Suzanne (new)

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments Ok ladies, I messed up. Alternate reality was actually Chasing Magic and magic was Fool Moon. I had to go through the posts, as it seemed very strange that I hadn't posted a selection. I posted a selection on post 141, very small post. How do I fix this?

message 177: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Nici, you haven't actually reviewed Chasing Magic yet, just that you'd read it, in post #141.

Your captain can switch the books on the master list and that will be sufficient, but you'll still need to rate & review Chasing Magic.

So sorry to hear you've been sick, and hope you're feeling better!

Book:
Archangel's War (Guild Hunter, #12) by Nalini Singh by Nalini Singh
How it Fits: Tagged Kick Ass Heroine
Date Read: 11.13.19
Rating: 4 stars

Review:
So much to love about this latest installment for the Guild Hunter series, yet so much that wasn't as great.

On the one hand, I loved a lot of what happened in this book. I loved Elana's transformation, and that all of the Seven were there by their side. I loved the Legion and was torn apart by the sacrifice they made. I even enjoyed how all of the archangels banded together in the end to fight Lijuan. (view spoiler) Gah, finally!!

Then on the other, I felt like it moved really slow. Like it took forever to get to that epic battle we've been waiting for for so many books, and that battle took up about 40% of the book O.O My interest did waver a bit for that first half. Add to that the frustration I felt towards Raphael & Elana when they took forever to do what we knew had to happen (re the Legion), and for not understanding, and then almost glossing over, the final seconds. Like huh? What just happened?

All in all, this has been a really fun series. Elena & Raphael are my favorite couple and I love when the series comes back to them. Not sure what the author has in store now that the Cascade series arc has completed but I'll definitely be continuing on. We still need Illium's & Aodhan's HEAs!

Review: Ok, so this is neither of the books I had originally planned. But it was the easiest fae book for me to obtain, and I have been way more interested in this series thanks to this challenge and you ladies! I am beginning to see the potential for sure- but I think I may need another book or two to be completely drawn in to the world. My favorite things about this one were:
1) Learning more about the world and specifically about half blood vs. full blood
2) Learning about the different types of fae. Toby's blood tasting is...interesting. That is certainly not the fae I'd choose to be.
3) I liked Alice the AI, and how powerful yet childlike she is.

Anyway, I'll definitely continue on with the series!

message 189: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments So my imoortals book - I'm about 1/3 through. Problem is now with Tower Teams I kind of want to wait to completely finish it til later in the week - it is #18 in the series, so if we decide to go for the series count it could help there. I'm not completely sure if I care about that or not, and I may just look for another immortals book to fit in here or something.

Review: I enjoyed the Night Huntress series, and Vlad was always an interesting character when he appeared, so it is neat that he gets his own series. "Frankie" is a circus performer with an unusual gift, and she meets Vlad when she's kidnapped by his enemies. I thought she was a good match for him, and I liked that she didn't totally shy away from the nasty aspects of being a vampire. This series definitely has potential!

Review:
I haven't been a huge fan of this series, not like Maas' Throne of Glass series, but it has improved with each subsequent book though I think it's not nearly as good or memorable. With that said, I have to wonder what the point of this novella was? I don't think it moved the story along all that much, and I could've done without Feyra and Rhys' constant sex-crazed thoughts. I mean, I get it. Hormones are raging, they're newly in love and they want to do it all the time. Doesn't mean that I want to read it page after page after page. Give it a break already! Also didn't really fit for me since this still seems more YA to me.

And oh geez, Tamlin. I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hate where the author took Tamlin's story. He's made a lot of mistakes but to take him there?!?! Ugh he's just so broken now that I can't help but feel sorry for him. I hope Maas redeems him somehow in the next book but have a feeling that Maas just hates this character so it won't happen.

Lastly don't get me started on Feyra's wandering around the city, buying gifts for everyone, and talking about painting. Can you say BORING? Fact is, I just didn't care. Feyra isn't my favorite character (I actually don't really like her) but get me back to something with more substance, more action, more intrigue.

message 196: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 852 comments I kind of quit on that series because I just can't make myself like Feyra. I WANT to like the series - I really do.

Review:
I felt like it's been a long time since I visited this character and this world so this book felt different to me. Maybe it's because almost the entire book was spent in Faerie. Or maybe it was because we didn't see or visit with her friends or Death (except very small snippets). Or could also be that it wasn't so much about her ability to raise shades but rather delving more into her other planeweaving abilities. Or maybe it's just as simple as it being too long since I read the last one.

I think for most of the book I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. It was primarily her, Dugan and Fallin running around trying to figure out who killed some fae. I've never been a fan of Falin (give me Death!), especially with him being tied to the Winter Queen, so I was hoping she'd give Dugan a shot instead. I won't spoil it but those last 2 chapters were CRAZY (yes in caps)!!! So looks like the author finally chose who Alex will end up with. About time woman!

This was an entertaining and fun read, with some action and mystery, and likable characters. This left off with quite a shock so can't wait till the next one comes out!

I'm in the same boat. I really hate Feyra but can say that in the 3rd book she's not nearly as unlikable. Or at least maybe the action and everything else going on made her more tolerable.

I LOVED the Throne of Glass series so it's a total bummer I don't like this one as much.
