A Tide of Black Steel by Anthony Ryan
needs a little better world and character building.3 Stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore
Not at all as per the cover.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Devils Kill Devils by Johnny Compton
The worst book I read this year! (or maybe ever!)
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Fate of Magic by Sara Raasch & Beth Revis
was a quick ending to the series. I don't think a lot of thought went into this one.Wasn't bad, just blah... lol

Sipsworth by Simon Van Booy
A contemporary fiction about an old woman and a mouse. Quirky!
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Heir by Sabaa Tahir
didn't live up to all of the hype. It wasn't bad, just very predictable.

My backlog is done!
The Black Loch was an excellent surprise addition to the original three books of Peter May's Lewis Trilogy. Rugged Isle of Lewis setting, dark mysteries, more secrets revealed from the past - love it!
My review of The Black Loch
Nature of Frost by Jus Accardo
A good story and end to the series but it's a little too simple and quick.3 Stars

I love the book cover.
Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄💖Brightly Shining by Ingvild H. Rishøi
A Christmas story - yes, but not as "brightly shining" as the title claims. a good option for those who seek darker festive tales.

I loved Donal Ryan's follow-up to his much-awarded The Spinning Heart. In Heart, Be at Peace, he picks up the stories ten years later of the same rural Irish villagers. He deserves his growing reputation.
My review of Heart Be at Peace
The Answer Is No by Fredrik Backman
I wanted to say 'Yes' to Backman's latest work, but the result is a slightly mixed 'Maybe'. Not his best work IMHO. He's much better at full-length serious fiction.

The Business Trip
by Jessie Garcia wasn't as mysterious or suspenseful as the blurb claimed it was going to be, but it was still a good read.3 Stars
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Irish author Kevin Barry has sent some wild Irish characters to snowy Montana in the early, untamed American west. The Heart in Winter is funny, tragic, lawless, and full of heart, not only in winter. It is quite a ride!
My review of The Heart in Winter
The Witch of Colchis by Rosie Hewlett
An interesting sophomore book by this talented young writer. A great option for those who enjoy powerful Greek mytho retellings.

Good to know. I also have that one coming up for January.
The first chapter in Lightfall by Ed Crocker
was a great hook, but too bad the rest of the story was dull. 2 Stars

For a quick and spooky read, try
, this book is great for those who love a good conspiracy theory. The characters are less than perfect and funny. This one will make you chuckle.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I Might Be in Trouble by Daniel Aleman
This shouldn't have been my kind of book at all, but to my surprise, I enjoyed it quite a lot. A dark but entertaining satire.

I've seen True Love by Paddy Crewe compared to Sally Rooney's writing, and I think that's appropriate. I preferred his unusual first book, My Name Is Yip. I like this, but less.
My review of True Love
The Outcast Mage by Annabel Campbell
was a good read and I'll be looking for the next in the series.3 Stars

What Does It Feel Like? by Sophie Kinsella
I ended 2024 with this poignant novella. Much recommended! For those like me who are wary of Sophie Kinsella's usual genre, note that this isn't a romcom.

The Picture Bride by Lee Geum-yi
Great start, okay end. But contains quite a lot of interesting historical information about Koreans in Hawaii.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
If they've found The Wrong Hands, then whose are they? This is Mark Billingham's Detective Miller #2, but it could easily be a standalone. He is an experienced author who leads us gently through back stories without making me feel guilty for not remembering who's who. 😊)
My review of The Wrong Hands
A Better Nightmare by Megan Freeman
was an ok of a read for a slow one.2 Stars

Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell
Not for everyone, and definitely not my kind of book either. But I still ended up liking this monster romance to a great extent. Go figure!

I just finished listening to "Head Cases" by John McMahon and was pleasantly surprised - while I expected a run of the mill procedural, this was actually flawless and very gripping. My review can be found here.
For any fans of American professional football, especially those with young kids they hope will become fans, I'm happy to recommend the brand new Patrick Mahomes children's biography by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. His Kansas City Chiefs are headed to the Super Bowl again in a few weeks!
My review of Patrick Mahomes with several illustrationshttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Vanishing Bookstore by Helen Phifer
Good, not great. The titular bookstore is hardly present in the story!
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Two middle-grade novels. One good; the other, not so much.1. The Last House in the Row by Lesley Parr
This publisher rarely goes wrong!
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
2. The Forgotten Magic of Zoey Turner by Erin Stewart
Expected far better from that cover and premise.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Poor Girls by Clare Whitfield
A great historical crime fiction based on an actual gang of female thieves. Had the final quarter been better, this would have rated even higher for me.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Two good nonfiction options for younger readers:1. What to Do When Your Temper Flares, 2nd Edition: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Problems With Anger by Dawn Huebner
A great and practical guide book for kids (as well as adults) who wish to learn how to manage their temper in a better way.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
2. Remarkable Women: Fascinating Facts You Never Knew About Amazing Women! by Eric Huang
An interesting and inspiring compilation of amazing women throughout the ages.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My 5 star review of the debut book by Holly Brickley, Deep Cutshttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden
Good for the historical fiction, below par for the fantasy.
