Phrynne wrote: "I suppose so. Some companies deal with it okay though."Exactly. I buy other things from overseas including books and have no problems, but if they won't take PayPal, I'm gone.
Phrynne wrote: "Happens to me every time I try to buy toys in the UK for my English grandchildren. Not just Paypal but credit cards too. You get right to the end and then it says you cannot pay from overseas."Ah :/ How odd...I've seen some places allow you to have billing from whereever and then you can ship the item to whereever as long as someone has paid the bill.
I will admit I did have problems using my CC once with an online shop in UK...So, I gave up and went elsewhere.

A little bit of help from the experts in our group please!
I purchased a new paperwhite kindle - I'm having some issues with transferring (but that's another story) The thing I need help with is this:
When an author sends me a title and I transfer it across from my PC to the kindle, it shows on the home page. But then I can't find it anywhere in the books. I want to transfer it to my collection - Read for Review Author ARCs - but can't find it to put it there. Can anyone tell me where it's going when I transfer it across please? I've looked everywhere I can think of, looked on Amazon for help, read the manual....

I only ever get the cheapest houso Kindle, so I can't speak for your particular reader, but have you maybe placed the book into a folder not recognised by the Kindle's interface? What program are you using to sideload your books?
I receive the book from the author in mobi - plug the cord into the computer and copy and paste across to the kindle. As I said, it shows it's there on the home page, but when I click on "books" it's not there. So yes, it may be going into a folder so it's not showing under all books that are downloaded, but I don't know where...
Thanks anyway Ryan:)
Thanks anyway Ryan:)
Brenda, are any of your books showing on the Kindle? And if so, is this particular book in the same folder as them?

There's over 1000 Ryan - automatically transferred across from my old kindle. I'm sorting folders at the moment. Or Collections as they're called... I have a lot of Collections - NetGalley, Aussie Authors etc...

Okay, so most of them are showing up, just not the current one? Being a .mobi file, Amazon won't manage it at the back end, so you won't be able to synch it between devices, for example. Maybe these 'collections' are all through Amazon? If so you might need to email your .mobi to Amazon so it can be managed through the Collections interface. You'll have a send-to-Kindle email address, something like brenda17@kindle.com. It will be in your Kindle's settings.
Thanks Ryan. I've found it (hiding obscurely) and am going to have another go tomorrow at some others I have waiting to be manually moved across from one kindle to the next. They're are mostly all in my kindle for PC file on the laptop. So if I copy and past from there to the new kindle, I'll see if I can find them. I'll do what you're suggesting if I can't locate them that way. It's a pain that only the Amazon originated books come across. I found the NetGalley ones in Docs!
Brenda wrote: "No I've never done that Laura - I haven't needed to but know it can be done:) Thanks!"I've never either because all my books are directly from Amazon but I just wonder if that would help solve the problem with the books being put in strange places. But if it doesn't work then I guess it's something to cross off the list too.
At the moment I'm going OK with them thanks:) I finally figured out what to do! I've got the main ones there, that was the most important thing:)
Brenda (and others), if you have any more trouble along these lines (e-book in wrong format for reader), I've found a really good online converter. http://www.zamzar.com/You need to download the e-book to a computer, then upload it to this website. Select the format that your e-reader is compatible with by clicking on "Convert files to..." (for Kindles, that is azw3. I don't know what other readers use, I am a Kindle person). Enter your email address, and click "convert". You will be sent an email with a link to download the converted book to your computer. The link is only viable for 24 hours, but the conversion is usually pretty quick, depending on how big the file is.
You can convert 10 files at a time, but only to the same format (i.e. you can have 10 books that are a mixture of mobi and epub, and convert all of them to azw3).
Happy converting and reading :)
there's a GR Giveaway for this one The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession about Shakespeare and antiquarian books, I really enjoyed it. https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh...
those readers who enjoyed Gilly Macmillan's Burnt Paper Sky
will be pleased to know she is working on a sequel......one that features detective Jim Clemo
I emailed Gilly Macmillan to thank her for such an excellent read, to say I was really looking forward to her third book and to let her know about a typo and an error: she replied that the typo they knew about, the error no one else "not me, my editors, a proofreader or two copyeditors" had spotted. And told me her third book was a sequel to BPS and said it was lovely to bring back Jim Clemo. I feel rather privileged to be in the know!
That's really amazing Marianne. It's lovely when they bother to reply isn't it. Means they're genuine in my opinion:) Hopefully they'll send you an ARC when it's ready to go...
Yes TRR have gone way down to what they used to be like...it'd be 12-18 months since I received an email from them...
I still get on regularly to see what's on offer, but all the good ones go elsewhere. I was glad to see Dale got this one from them!
Marianne wrote: "there's a GR Giveaway for this one The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession about Shakespeare and antiquarian books, I really enjoyed it. https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sh......"I entered for this. It sounds really interesting.
A review of Emily Rodda by Kate Forsyth: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Since I have a very high opinion (for all my grumpy reviewing) of both of those exceptional authors I had to share my excitement!!! I thought the tone of the review was gracious as well
what's with this author? https://www.goodreads.com/author/list... I was looking up a James Patterson book and found this: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
then I looked at the list of this author's books: there are a lot of bestselling titles with same or similar covers
how does this author get away with it?
I've just reported it to Goodreads Support Marianne...thanks for bringing it to our attention. I'll let you know what happens...
Marianne, I received an email from Goodreads Support this morning:
As these aren't valid book records, we've removed them from the site as well as the associated author profile.
They also apologised for the lengthy delay in getting back to me. And thanked us for bringing it to their attention..

And I just clicked on your links and there's something still there on both so I'll send the links back to them:)
Good to know. After you alerted them, I noticed more books appearing on the author's list, so there's someone out there adding books, and I guess getting friends to "like" them....
Yes I thought so too, but still not good!
They've completely fixed it now - author is gone and the book link goes to the correct JP one :)

is it just that I am terribly stingy, or are these Book Shots by James Patterson expensive? I was looking only at the ones for the series I read: Alex Cross, WMC and Michael Bennett, but I saw prices ranging from $5 (QBD via Booko) to $15 and more, and they aren't that long 144 pages. Even the kindle versions are $2.20. I was pleased to see my library had Cross Kill and The Trial on order already, and I asked them to order Chase, which they are doing, so now I have all three on reserve at the library. Maybe I'll come across them at Vinnies or Salvos in a few months.
