How tragic! Thanks for sharing Andrea...I haven't heard of her before, or read anything by her.

message 52: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4426 comments Thanks Andrea for telling us about this, how very sad and tragic, I've not heard of her either. This sort of thing makes you think about really not knowing what goes on in the lives of those less fortunate.

message 53: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Andrea, thanks for the info. How sad. I have read both Pomegranate Soup and the sequel Rosewater and Soda Bread and enjoyed them very much. I have The Margaret Thatcher school of beauty on reserve at the library. I am pretty sure I even emailed her about something in the first book, and I vaguely remember there was to be a third book in the Pomegranate series.
Very sad indeed.

cheers

Audible from Amazon is the only one I know about Matt. Plus of course borrowing them from the library:) Good luck!

Adriana (geoexplorer) | 90 comments Indeed Brenda, and if you already have the e-book the price is very good!

I actually thought of another place (or places) this morning. When I went to a book launch recently it was held in a book shop - privately owned - and they had audible CDs. They were very (VERY) expensive though!

They have a special at the moment where you get the first month/book free. You can download them onto your phone, I-pod etc. You pay a monthly membership fee & for that you get 1 free credit each month (1 credit = 1 book.) No contracts you can cancel your membership at any time

Our local library has e-audiobooks that you can borrow. They download to an app on your phone or you can download to computer. Once they have expired (after 3 weeks) you can no longer access it. My husband does this and listens to books on his way to and from work. Perhaps check out if your library offers this as well. All accessed online from home.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Most if not all South Aussie libraries will have audiobooks available for download, not sure about the other states.

message 61: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 2163 comments Does anyone else have a particular word that really irritates them when they see it in writing? I do! The word is 'pressurised', used in the context of 'she was feeling pressurised'. Sheila O'Flanagan loves it, judging by how frequently she uses it. I'm reading Paul Torday at the moment, and he slipped one in too. Could it be UK thing? What's wrong with 'pressured'?

message 62: by Ryan (new)

Ryan I believe the correct term is 'pressured', Andrea. 'Pressurised' sounds more like a technical term.

And it sounds like you're in a can!!!

message 64: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 2163 comments It always gives me a mental image of the person being pummelled with a meat tenderiser, for some reason (pressurised, tenderised, whatever).

message 65: by Ryan (new)

Ryan 'Disorientated' is another one. Is 'disoriented' not enough?

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Ryan wrote: "'Disorientated' is another one. Is 'disoriented' not enough?"

I hate that one as well Ryan, and 'interpretated' ??'!! It's Interpret or Interpreted.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Ryan wrote: "'Disorientated' is another one. Is 'disoriented' not enough?"

Could cause confusion ;)

message 68: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Apparently the longer word is to do with direction, whereas the shorter one is about mental state. But they really both mean the same thing. You should be able to infer whether or not the statement is about geography from the context.

Thanks Suzie - can you put your post in the Victorian thread too please...more chance for all the members who live in the area to see it:) Also do you have a link to the website? That'd be good to include:)

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Is there a way for me to add all the links to the challenges I'm involved in onto my profile page under the "Events I'm attending" section? This is to make it easier for me to readily access those pages when adding reviews or adjustments.
The next season challenge shows, and there is a badge to access AWW but my other challenges such as annual, personal and quarterly etc. don't show....can I add those somehow?

Not sure if this is the right place to put this so I will also put it to the Librarians.

I don't know if this helps Julie, but what I've done is added personal challenge (and other group challenge) details in the comments under my main 2015 Reading Challenge so that it's always available from my homepage. It's not exactly what you wanted, but achieves the same result in a roundabout way.

Yes Andrea, I think that seems to be the only effective way to do it at the moment. I hope GR can come up with something simpler.

FrenzieMcKenzie | 50 comments I'm hoping I'm in the right place with this...

Do you keep the books that you've read on your Kindle or eReader or do you delete them once you've read them?
It seems odd to have Gigabytes of storage but only have the book I'm currently reading on my device.
That said I can never find books again when I want to go back for a reread.

message 83: by Jodez (new)

Jodez (jodez4) | 30 comments I keep mine on my reader, though I also have a backup on my computer, just in case.
If I'm also using the reading app on my phone, I try to remember to delete them off there when I'm done, that said there's probably 3 or 4 I haven't deleted yet...

FrenzieMcKenzie | 50 comments Do you sort them at all e.g. into collections?

I've been meaning to ask the exact question myself. I only have about 80 books on my kindle app but what do people do that have hundreds. I wonder do you delete? I'm never going to reread as I don't have time for that.

message 86: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79974 comments Mod
I keep them all on my kindle (it's getting slow now because of that and I need to move them elsewhere) - I sort them into collections and have a large number of them. And when I've read them they go into the "read" folder:) I currently have almost 500 in that folder! But the way I look at it; I don't throw away my "real" books when I've finished them, why should I do the same with my electronic ones?? :)

message 87: by Neville (last edited Apr 11, 2015 04:25AM) (new)

Neville You can archive the books so that they still are on your Amazon account , but not physically on your Kindle, just the title under "archived items" (last item in the list on my Kindle which is over 3 years old.
They can the be retrieved).

I currently have about 2,000 books on mine (most in Author and series collections).

message 88: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 79974 comments Mod
What about books which weren't purchased/obtained from Amazon Neville? If they didn't originate there, would they still be available and retrievable?

message 89: by Veronica ⭐️ (new)

Veronica ⭐️ | 2384 comments I currently have them in collections but I know if I get too many books I'm going to go all OCD and start double checking my all books lists against my collections to check everything is accounted for. That's why I thought it may be better for me to read and delete. If they are archived at Amazon that's good if I ever want to retrieve a title.

FrenzieMcKenzie | 50 comments That's what I'm thinking about too, I'll want to sort them by author, series and maybe even theme. I do reread some favourite books so I want to keep at least those on my reader so I can easily revisit them.

Archiving is a whole other question. I don't want them on my reader but I don't want to delete them forever.

Andrea | 2163 comments Brenda wrote: "What about books which weren't purchased/obtained from Amazon Neville? If they didn't originate there, would they still be available and retrievable?"

Like Neville, I also archive the books I've bought on Amazon - cloud storage means they are only a click away.

As for the many that were not bought on Amazon, I keep copies on my computer and follow routine backup protocols there.

I keep all my travel guides in a collection on my Kindle, but must admit I am not as organised with other books. At the moment I have about 20 pages of titles of books 'on hand' so it could do with a cull.

I archive my Amazon purchases on kindle too. It is just so easy.

message 94: by Neville (last edited Apr 11, 2015 10:09PM) (new)

Neville I have a copy of all books not bought from Amazon on my computer in a special folder with a sub folder for every author. This is where I load them onto my Kindle from. Then I can delete the ones I have read from my Kindle, but still have a copy of the every one I want to keep.
This next bit might sound a bit over the top, but I do it because I am a computer software specialist (have been since about 1980) and have experienced disk crashes with all data lost.
I also have a complete backup on a separate portable hard disk drive where I backup all my data folders every week.

message 96: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Maybe Neville (you sound pretty clever!) can help me with this, then:
I have had some books given to me by the author as .mobi files via email attachment. I can click on them on my PC and they open my Kindle for PC and I can read them. But when I click on the email attachment on my Samsung tab4, the only options are to open via Memo or S Planner. Do I need to save the .mobi somewhere on my device for it to open as a Kindle book, and if so, where?

message 97: by Neville (new)

Neville I am sorry, but tablets are out of my league. I work on a mainframe computer for a major food manufacturing company.
My suggestion is (I use this a lot) is to Google what you want to do, and check first for any YOUTUBE posts.

I believe you either need an APP or, as you stated, save the file in a folder that will be read by the software.

Try this site http://ebookfriendly.com/books-on-sam...

message 98: by Ryan (new)

Ryan You need a program that can read .mobi files.

message 99: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Neville, thanks so much, I will check it out!

message 100: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Kindle does read .mobi files, but I just had to move them to the right spot. Once I figured out how and where (remember, I am still a tablet novice) it worked!!
The Youtube idea helped enormously, so thanks, Neville.
Now I know what to do if I get any more by email!
