message 3: by Rae (new)

Rae | 6 comments that's okay! i want to read a few too many obscure books, lol.

i read THG in like sixth grade, but I definitely want to re-read it. :)

Anna WOW You and I have a lot of books in common!

Here are some of my favorites off your shelf that you should definitely read soon!

Airman This was one of those books that made me want to keep reading. Very interesting with plenty of action. Also it's with castles and kings and I love that time period.
The Ruins of Gorlan MY FAVORITE SERIES!!! READ IT AS SOON AS YOU CAN!
Out of My Mind This one was really good, a bit sad at times, but pretty good.
Millions of Cats This is a short picture book. My friend read it out loud to us-just because XD-and I liked it!
The Prisoner of Cell 25 WOOH! I LOVED THIS ONE TOO!
Tunnels This was interesting, but at the same time, it was really strange. A bit creepy. Some of the books are more violent than others.
The False Prince This. Was. Amazing. Read it!! Medieval ages, and Sage is totally awesome!!
Cinder Just started reading this series, I've been so satisfied. The characters are all so realistic and the writing is very well done. I instantly feel into the story.

I see you've got the Maze Runner series, and honestly I didn't like the first book at all. The idea was interesting but there was so much language-fake but still stupid-and I feel like it could have been better executed.

I could go on and on but Prisoner of Cell 25, The False Prince, The Ruins of Gorlan, Cinder, and Airman are some of my absolute favorite books!!

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) Coraline is great and a quick read.
I enjoyed Geekerella.
Helter Skelter is amazingly horrifyingly good!
I loved Gossamer by Lois Lowry!! Also a quick read.
The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld was good.
The Shades of Magic trilogy by V.E. Schwab is fantastic!
All Adam Silvera books are a win! Super emotional heartbreakers.
Fahrenheit 451 is a favorite of mine.

I just went through your first 10 pages. :)

dolly (cryptided) wuthering heights is a good one!! people either really love it or really hate it, so it's a fun one to read to see where you land. i've read it 3 times and love it

message 9: by Catherine (last edited May 17, 2019 10:51AM) (new)

Catherine | 392 comments I admit that I didn't go through your entire list, sorry! I probably missed some really good books, but here are some suggestions. I hope you'll find a precious new favorite!

All time favorites:
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and anything by Tolkien. Oh, and The Name of the Wind is so beautiful. Tolkien, Martin and Rothfuss are my top 3 adult high fantasy authors.

Sometimes hard to read, but interesting:
We is a really interesting book and it's even more interesting when you read 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by by Aldous Huxley. Those three books are all interesting in their own way and for me they kind of complete each other in the sense that once you read them, it really makes you think more than when you read only one of them. Paradise Lost, Lord of the Flies, The Scarlet Letter are also really interesting books that you "should" read at least once in my opinion.

Not all time favorites, but still great classics:
A lot of Charles Dickens' work is a must read for me. Same for Victor Hugo. Now I didn't love Mark Twain's novels (I did like it though), but a lot of people did and you might love it more than I did.

Now for a good YA fantasy, I'd recommend Six of Crows from your tbr list. I wasn't a big fan of the Grisha trilogy, but I really liked this duology.

message 10: by Evi (new)

Evi | 4 comments Hey! I went though your entire list and I definitely recommend

The song of achilles - It will break your heart.
Little women - Every girl should read this
Lord of the Flies - It makes you think
The name of the wind - If you're into character driven fantasy stories

And I agree with @Catherine, Six of Crows is a very good YA fantasy. Just like The Scorpio Races. It's one of my favorite books of Maggie Stiefvater.

message 11: by linzie (new)

linzie | 35 comments Yeah, the Song of Achilles is really good.

message 12: by Drakeryn (new)

Drakeryn | 36 comments whoa, you have a lot of good books on your TBR

(note to others: if you click on the "compare books" link on cal's shelf it will show you all the books you have in common, including ones on cal's TBR. here's the direct link, hopefully that works)

anyway my recs:

Six of Crows - the book of all time. sometimes I go to the polls page and just click Six of Crows on every poll. anyway, this is the book for you if you like heists and a close-knit crew (with lots of camaraderie and banter but sometimes they also try and kill each other, gotta have balance)

The Wicker King and The Foxhole Court - these books also have brilliant character work. they both feature boys from broken homes developing super intense friendships that eventually turn into love. The Wicker King focuses on mental illness, while The Foxhole Court trilogy is more flashy and has gangz and sportz and dramatic showdowns, but you can't go wrong with either

(note: The Foxhole Court trilogy is basically the king of slow burn, the romance doesn't show up for a long time but it does and it's so good. tbh I need to re-read it now that I know who the ship is)

Railsea - this book is so cool and fun, I just love the concept of hunting giant moles on my train on the wide open railsea

Watership Down - my childhood favorite! <3 rabbits

Rae | 6 comments oof I completely forgot about the "compare books" thing D: but I'm glad you mentioned it!

message 14: by Cendaquenta (new)

Cendaquenta *goes through every page*

I just picked out stuff that was either favourites of mine, books I think are all-time well-deserved classics, or, in the case of Middlegame, books I'm hotly anticipating. :)

Song of Achilles
Goodnight Mr Tom
Middlegame
On the Edge of Gone
How Long Till Black Future Month?
The Once and Future King
The Hate U Give
Inkheart
We Have Always Lived In The Castle
The Girl Who Drank The Moon
The Last Unicorn
Jane Eyre
The Real Boy

Abigail (alienajackson) We Regret to Inform You by Ariel Kaplan. I promise that you will love this book.

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna (bookgirl2) | 16 comments You should definitely read The Girl Who Drank the Moon. I’ve read it recently and it is now one of my favorite books!

message 19: by Richard (new)

Richard Dominguez (richarddominguez) I'm a bit compulsive when it comes to books so natural I had to switch my setting to "infinite scroll" and start with your number 1. You have some great books on your list, so let me start off by saying I am passionate about all the classics and they are always on my reread shelf at home (having reread them several times). While all the Harry Potter stories are a good read I didn't include them because I don't consider them "must read or first choice reads". These are the ones I would recommend you read first ...

The Song of Achilles
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Hard Times
The Invisible Man
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Fahrenheit 451
East of Eden
Crime and Punishment
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
We Have Always Lived in the Castle (anything by Jackson is a great read)
The Catcher in the Rye
Charlotte's Web
David Copperfield
War and Peace
The Last Unicorn
The Outsiders
All Quiet on the Western Front
The Swiss Family Robinson
Jane Eyre
The Scarlet Letter
Peter Pan
The Pearl
Lord of the Flies (this is an amazing story)
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Paradise Lost (I noticed Paradise Found wasn't on the list and reading them together would be a great experience)
Dune (The The Martian Chronicles and The Foundation Trilogy are also excellent reads)
Odd Thomas (in my opinion the greatest literary character since King Lear and my Second choice from the list)
Great Expectations
Brave New World
The Martian
The Island of Doctor Moreau
Dracula
Animal Farm (this is my FIRST choice from the list)

LOL, looking back I realize this may not be much help, but these are the ones I would say you should try ... I enjoyed going through your list ... thanks for asking

message 20: by Sara O. (new)

Sara O. | 3 comments I cheated and used the 'compare books' function lol, of all those my favorites that you should definitely read are:

- Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
- More Than This
- A Darker Shade of Magic (or anything by VE Schwab really)
- Wintergirls, or Speak which is more known from the same author, most of her books are good too
- My Sister Rosa
- The Picture of Dorian Gray

message 21: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 342 comments I loved …
The Scarlet Pimpernel
The Great Divorce
The Mysterious Benedict Society
Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
A Little Princess
Narnia
The Hiding Place
Holes
Rilla of Ingleside
The False Prince
The Prisoner of Cell 25

For the record, I was disappointed by The Book Thief and Uglies and just hated Graceling.

message 23: by Jelina (new)

Jelina (jelinareads) | 4 comments Wow that's a pretty good list
First choice would be Coraline: awesome read: suspense and wonder merging and contrasting like Led lights.

Second choice is Dracula: Stroker's female characters don't get enough credit. Mina Harker For the win!

Also if your in a dsytopian mode
Definetly check out:
Brave new world
Animal Farm
Farenheit 451

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

13 little blue envelopes is great as a summer read
Libromancer is a great read for any book lover!
Finniking of the rock
and Graceling are amazing high fantasy reads.

I loved Narnia as a kid, dont know how it would be to read it for the first time older. But they are good books.

I read the stepsister scheme last year, LOOOVE it! Fantastic take on the stories.
Wild swans is a great story, raw and painful so be ready for tears. But sometimes you want a book like that.
Holes is a great fast, fun, funny, impactful read.
Geekerella is a must read! great cinderella retelling!

All in all you got great reading tasty, I had the time so I actually went through your whole list am that crazy. :)

Richard super great list there!!!

message 26: by Melliott (new)

Melliott (goodreadscommelliott) | 510 comments Finnikin of the Rock—I recommend this not because this first book is so great (it's good, though), but because the two SEQUELS to it are knock-your-socks-off amazing.

The Scorpio Races—in my opinion, Stiefvater's best book

The Knife of Never Letting Go—If you like a series (and it is a three-book series and it IS a cliffhanger, so you have to commit), this one is intriguing and loaded with suspense and surprises.

Aristotle and Dante...—so good, so sweet, so perfect.

I concur with the Six of Crows duology, but I also LOVED Graceling and would recommend that too.

A Darker Shade of Magic—GREAT series

Don't waste your time on the Maze Runner books.

You have a lot of old books and classics on here, some of which you could probably miss without missing anything, while others would be a shame. I love The Shell Seekers and anything by Rumer Godden, too. Also the Dune books by Frank Herbert, but only the first four or maybe five, because after that the series drops off and then he died and his son took over and his son is a TERRIBLE writer. Definitely We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and also The Haunting of Hill House, if you haven't read that—Jackson is amazing.

Read The Lock Artist! One of my high school book club's favorite books, and I've read it three times and still love it.

Okay, I gave up at 20 pages. You have a lifetime of reading on here! Good luck!

message 28: by Julia (new)

Julia | 117 comments My top choices are:

Fahrenheit 451 My favourite dystopia!

Lord of the Flies A dark take on humanity, with incredible use of symbolism!

Inkheart One of my all-time favourites! Really it is a fantasy story about loving books, but it is so much deeper than that!

Eragon My sister's all-time favourite! The author is super nice and will reply when you write to him! :)

The Name of the Wind Such a great fantasy, but you may want to wait, because the author doesn't seem to want to write book three any time soon!

Calvin and Hobbes All of these... the entire collection! Timeless humour!

Have you read the Harry Potter series? I see you only rated book five.

Also: to people trying to make suggestions, I recommend using the "Compare Books with cal" option. It will narrow down the list so that you just look at books you have in common! :)
