suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Is it just my hopeful imagination or are the Suns playing well this time around? It's certainly about time that they did ;o>

message 261: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22284 comments They've certainly got off to a good start. It remains to be seen whether they can get some consistency into their game and score more. Their three wins have been by 1 point, 3 points and 2 points. The trip to Adelaide will test them. The Crows are hurting and sure to come out with all guns blazing. But the Suns are good to watch, they play fearlessly and I really like their coach, Stuart Dew (former player at Port and Hawthorn).

message 262: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments I'm glad for them because I saw several Blog Posts and News Articles last year discussing how best to shake up and reshape the AFL and was surprised to read that quite a few of them were advocating 'scrapping the Suns' because as a Team they were considered to be 'little more than a joke'? - followed up by the idea of putting far more investment into a couple of other Coast Teams instead.

I didn't really understand the reasoning behind it but I did notice that nobody was objecting to or arguing against such a suggestion in the Comments Section and that many were posting in full agreement.

message 263: by Val (last edited Apr 20, 2019 06:22AM) (new)

Val H. | 22284 comments Aussie Rules is the predominant code in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. Rugby League rules supreme in New South Wales and Queensland. Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory and the Torres Strait Islands split their loyalties between both. So teams in Sydney, but more especially the two Queensland teams, really battle to get local support. And, of course, if the teams are struggling on the field, the people don't come. So they are forever chasing their own tails. Back in the early 2000s, Brisbane won three premierships back to back and had a huge following. They are also helped by the fact that they were a relocated team (the Melbourne club Fitzroy was summarily uprooted by the AFL). Same with the Swans, they were originally South Melbourne. So those two teams still have some rusted on fans in Melbourne. But the Suns and the Giants were both start-up teams, so no history or tradition and not a lot of local interest. Many grass-roots supporters believe that the AFL should have put their money into a start-up team in Tasmania where the locals love Aussie Rules, but for their own reasons, the AFL decided the Gold Coast was the place to be. A heap of money has been poured into the club but it has been an uphill battle. I think they (the AFL) learned a few lessons though and the Giants' start was a bit better organised. They are located in a traditional soccer area, but they were given so many concessions at the start that they now have a champion team - far more stars than the poor Suns. And then the Suns lost their best player, Tom Lynch, to the Tigers over the close season, and their captain, the amazing Gary Ablett back to Geelong, so they have a hard row to hoe.

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Ahhh, I get it now, thanks Val.

Val H. | 22284 comments Our tipsters' ladder is as follows:

CUMULATIVE LADDER:

SussexWelsh on 19 (171)
Philip on 19 (223)
RedJohn on 19 (268)

Another week of dire results leading to low scores from our tipsters - with the exception of Mr Grizzly who has obviously sussed out what's happening this year. Well done GG for topping both the weekly and cumulative ladders! Congrats too to all our charity winners.

And do check your scores!!!

Anita, you haven't picked a winner for the Bombers/Magpies game.

message 276: by theDuke (last edited Apr 23, 2019 05:42PM) (new)

theDuke | 6503 comments Well...that was a wash out. What the hell happened to my Giants? They were playing on their own turf ffs!

Something tells me, the Suns have had all the glory they're gunna get....but i think the Swans will eventually pick up their wings..and fly...fly...and FLY! Not so sure about those Lions anymore though. Maybe they've had their fill and are doing what all big cats do...having a looooong nap!

Anyhoo..lets try again...

Tigers - 12 - (they better well bloody win!)
Magpies - (and these squarky beggers too!)
Port - (with any luck!)
Lions - (Puuuuurrrlleeeeaassee!)
Saints - (odds on favourite it seems, they are 2nd currently, who'd have thunk it?!)
Um......Giants...mibbe? - (c'mon lads, get ya arses in gear...pretty please!)
Dockers - (probably..but the way this season has been going so far, not likely!)
Hawks - (not confident...but they're the Hawks, they ought to be able to knock over the Blues, surely? *nibbles fingernails*)
Cats - (the only felines i trust, at the moment!)

My score prediction for this round...3!

Good luck y'all...especially blerdy me! :)

Hello Suze. J got me a 'Mini Egg' Easter egg and I've not even started on the actual egg yet! Treated meself to a bag of said Mini Eggs but that's it. Really need to drop two-or-three stone so am pleased with this (as yet) little bit of restraint.

Had a nice Easter m'dear?

message 297: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Not bad at all, Blastro ;o>

Tia Maria is amazingly still with us(!) and still doing well too which was obviously the very best gift of the weekend - and we have all shared in some really yummy Easter Egg treats and enjoyed a couple of Turkey Dinners with all of the trimmings.

Just half of the massive Turkey left now to get through (my Mum bought a 10kg one for just the 3 of us!) and so it's going to be Turkey Pasta tonight and then probably Turkey Curry tomorrow! - LOL!!!

The Weather has stayed glorious here - we were forecast a severe Thunder Storm with heavy rainfall this afternoon but there's been no sign of it coming so far ;o>
