Good luck everyone. A balmy spring night here in Melbourne - currently 23 degrees. Hope it's a good game even if Geelong are without gun forward Tom Hawkins (suspended for 1 game).

message 1057: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22284 comments Yes, Duke's right. The Giants have held on to make it to their first ever Grand Final - and that was without Toby Green (the player everyone hates - out, suspended) and Lachie Whitfield (appendix) and sustaining two injuries to captain Phil Davis during the game. I didn't think they had a chance but truth be told, they handled the wet conditions much better than Collingwood.

Tonight's result:

First Preliminary Final
Collingwood Magpies (Tech) v Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke)
2.0.12 (Q1) 1.3.9
3.2.20 (Q2) 2.5.17
3.5.23 (Q3) 7.7.49
7.10.52 (Q4) 8.8.56

Val H. | 22284 comments I will be awarding another $15 on Monday night when the winner of the Brownlow Medal is announced (best and fairest player). The current favourite is the Cats' Paddy Dangerfield but others with a chance are Marcus Bontompelli (Bulldogs), Patrick Cripps (Carlton) and Lachie Neale (Brisbane). My favourite for the year is the Pies' Brodie Grundy. So, fingers crossed, one of you can take home some more money.

Just one last prediction needed from you. I'm going away for the weekend so probably won't be able to finalise things till Sunday evening or Monday morning, so please get your last tip in early if you can.

Grand Final:

Saturday, Sept 28
Richmond Tigers (Philip) v v GWS Giants (Duke) at the M.C.G., Melbourne

If punters could lodge their tips by midnight FRIDAY (your time) SEPTEMBER 27th it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 5.15am SATURDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary.

message 1060: by [deleted user] (new)

Val H. | 22284 comments If anyone spends time on FaceBook, I recommend the page Shit Brick Fences of Melbourne. Sample page here:

https://www.facebook.com/shitbrickfen...

It's just photos of tasteless and/or poorly constructed fences which are funny in themselves, but it's the comments that really make you laugh.

A comment on there today:

GWS are kind of like BankWest: they're from somewhere else, they're orange and they're not really a bank.

Val H. | 22284 comments A staple of Saturday morning radio listening is The Coodabeens. A two hour show of comedy and song. back in 2014 they posed the question: Cast your mind forward four years and give us your 2018 footy predictions. Some of the answers:

Swans seek mobility scooter allowance for Buddy in effort to break 8 game losing streak to GWS.

2018 headline: "Light at the end of the tunnel for Demons".

Saints reconsider ambitious plan for premiership by 2020. Look to 2066 centenary as more suitable to coincide with celebrations.

GWS unfurl premiership flag before crowd of 7.

On the back of yet another finals near miss, Tigers announce record membership and that this could be the year!

After a round one loss, headline reads "Giants suffering from back to back premiership hangover".

New teams Wellington Kiwis and Bali Bintangs start up. Draft concessions mean they will rule the comp for years.

Some interesting predictions there even for 2019 and ahead.

Val H. | 22284 comments I did award a further $15.00 on Monday night when the Brownlow Medal (best AND fairest player) was awarded to Freo's Nat Fyfe, only the 15th player in its 95 year history to win it twice. And very deserving too. He is a great player and a great captain (named as Captain of the All-Australian team this year). Of course it helps to be a champion player in a poorly performing team because you're going to get most of the umpires' votes. He polled 33 votes. Paddy Dangerfield of Geelong was one of the favourites - he polled 27 votes but was in competition with team mate Tim Kelly who polled 24. Likewise Lachie Neale of the Brisbane Lions (26 votes) saw his captain Dayne Zorko poll 19. Collingwood also had to divvy up the votes - Brodie Grundy got 23 votes and team mate Adam Treloar got 18. So the $15.00 goes into the pot to be reallocated next week when I come to tallying up this season's winnings.

Val H. | 22284 comments As I said before, I am off down the coast for the weekend in a few hours' time. Although we will watch the game on telly, it will be strange to be out of town on Grand Final weekend. I'm not sure you can estimate just how big it is in Melbourne. Today, as every year, the Friday before the Grand Final is a public holiday (what you call a bank holiday) just because of the football.

Both teams turn out in their entirety in a parade through the city streets, cheered on by thousands of fans.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-09-2...

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-09-2...

All week people have been camping out for tickets. People paint their houses and fences in team colours. Shop fronts are decorated. In my local shopping strip, one of the banks has an amazing 3D collage of Richmond and the MCG in their front window. Another has a selection of Richmond guernseys. All week prime time free-to-air-TV has featured talk shows on the weekend's game. I was buying wine today at a big liquor warehouse and the first question the checkout operator asked me was "Who are you barracking for tomorrow?" The game will be televised on both free-to-air and cable TV with the former playing finals from past years all through the night up to the traditional North Melbourne Breakfast (£125 a ticket) which will feature rock band Wolfmother.

The day's schedule looks like this:

8am – MCC reserve gates open
9:30am – AFL reserve and public gates open
10am – Under 18s all-star match begins
11:55am – Under 18s all-star match presentation
12:15pm – Sprint heats (a running race with a player from each team in the league)
1pm – AFL Grand Final team sheets to be confirmed
1:02pm – Teams enter MCG for first warm-up
1:26pm – Pre-match entertainment (Paul Kelly, Dean Lewis and Tones and I; John Williamson will perform Waltzing Matilda, while September favourite Mike Brady will once again lead the crowd in Up There Cazaly) and motorcade of retiring players, Brownlow medallist, etc commences
2:13pm – Official team entry ahead of Grand Final
2:15pm – Final warm-ups begin
2:26pm – National Anthem
2:28pm – Coin toss
2:30pm – AFL Grand Final, first bounce
3pm – AFL Grand Final, quarter time
3:06pm – AFL Grand Final, second quarter commences
3:35pm – AFL Grand Final, halftime
The main break will feature a game between the 22 AFL Auskicker of the Year nominees (the very little kids).
3:55pm – AFL Grand Final, second half commences
4:25pm – AFL Grand Final, three quarter time
4:31pm – AFL Grand Finall, fourth quarter commences
5pm – AFL Grand Final, fulltime
5:10pm – Post-match presentation.

Yes folks, it's a big day!!

theDuke | 6503 comments Well, i imagine Val is busy currently tallying everything up. So i'd like to get me complimentary congrats in now. So... congratulations to the Stripy ones yet again, a few years ago, they couldn't get in the 8, but the Richmond Tigers now have 2 championships under their belt, in this decade. And to Tim, for being their biggest British supporter (that we know of!); and of course big heartfelt thanks to Val..for not only her supremely effortlessness of running this season, once again, but also to her unwavering philanthropic generousity, of which as usual, i have already sent a donation to the UK branch of Insight. To all the charities that'll once again be benefiting from this season's acrued winnings; to all the individual round winners, & to those who got the closest weekly margins. And special credit to David, as this season's newly crowned AFL punting champion, well done sah! And finally (i think?)...to everyone whom participated once again on what what was yet another superb season.

Can't wait for it to start all over again, come next March! It's been a blast folks! :)

Final thought: 2020's season, WILL be the Giants year!! :)

message 1092: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22284 comments Apologies for being AWOL folks. I was away down the coast over the weekend followed by a hectic week (AMAZING gig by The Flaming Lips last night - do they ever put in a bad one???) plus the weather warms up and I get a stinking head cold.

Anyway, as Duke says, the Granny was a fizzer if ever there was one. I think the Giants had played their Grand Final the week before and despite the return of Toby Green and Lachie Whitfield (just days after an appendectomy), they still had injury problems and came up against a supreme unit in the Tigers. It was well and truly over by half-time and such an anti-climax after last year's Grand Final which went right down to the wire.

The main highlight was the fairy-tale story of Richmond's Marlion Pickett. This young man is 27 years old, has 4 children, spent two years in jail (2010 - 2012) for a string of offences, including burglary. There he won the prison footy team’s best and fairest award. Since that time he has performed exceptionally in Western Australia's Reserves Competition. Richmond took a chance on him, selecting him with pick 13 in the mid-season draft this year and he made his debut in their Reserves in August. The Sunday before the Grand Final, he won the Norm Goss Medal for best on ground in Richmond’s VFL premiership, with 20 touches, nine tackles and a goal. On Thursday he was named in their Grand Final side, the first player to make his AFL debut in a Grand Final since 1952 and ran out before a crowd of 100,014. In the big game, he amassed 22 disposals, 1 goal, 9 score involvements, 8 inside 50s and 559m gained and finished third in the Norm Smith Medal count (best on ground) behind teammates Dustin Martin and Bachar Houli. His Mum and Dad flew over from Perth, the latter's first time on a plane.

Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Greater Western Sydney Giants (Duke)
2.3.15 (Q1) 1.2.8
7.5.47 (Q2) 1.6.12
12.9.81 (Q3) 2.7.19
17.12.114 (Q4) 3.7.25

I'll have to add the final table later as it's on another computer but I know Lez's tip of Richmond by 43 was the closest and she added $15 to her winnings on behalf of Dementia Australia.
