Here, the home team is usually perceived as having an advantage even if only psychologically. Is it the same in Oz? Do the long distances make a significant difference too?

Here, the home team is usually perceived as having an advantage even if only psychologically. Is it the same in Oz? Do the long distances make a significant difference too?"
Hard to answer categorically Lez. There is a perception by Victorian fans that the rabid crowds in Perth and Adelaide sway the umpires' decisions. I doubt statistics show that to be true, but the crowds at those grounds are very one-sided (it's a long and expensive trip for Victorian fans to follow their teams to an away game) and I do think Freo/Eagles and Crows/Port rise to their fans' expectations. Also, the trip to Perth is long and potentially gruelling : "Non-stop flight time from Melbourne to Perth is around 4 hours 15 minutes. Fastest one-stop flight between Melbourne and Perth takes close to 5 hours . However, some airlines could take as long as 19 hours based on the stopover destination and waiting duration." There is also a 2 hour time difference to factor in. The shortest flight from Brisbane to Perth is 5 hours 30 minutes. Geelong are usually strong on their home ground. In theory Sydney should be the stronger team because their ground is smaller and they are used to exploiting it; visiting teams may have to change tactics. But Sydney are often vulnerable in home games. There is a theory that inter-state clubs who don't get to play at the MCG often are at a disadvantage in a Grand Final (didn't affect the Eagles last year but the Giants seem to struggle there). And then there are weather factors. Brisbane and Perth may be hot. There are two main stadiums in Melbourne: Marvel has a retractable roof but it is usually kept closed because strong sunlight causes shadows that bugger up the television coverage; the MCG is open-air so swirling winds and potential downpours. So no easy answer but I think the two Perth-based clubs and the two Adelaide-based clubs are more reliable at home.

Thanks Suzy that'll go well with my cutlass and flying carpet, (the second hand turban and a crystal ball, not Bing Crosby). :-)
