R3: SS Fearless 5 (5)

The Change series is about MCs that need changes in there lives and what happens after they decide to make these changes.
Con Danvers works for a company in Chicago and is passed over for a promotion because of the connection one of the other candidates has to someone in upper management at the company. Con finally has had enough and decides it is time to leave his job and Chicago and moves to a small town West Virginia. The first day on his way into town Con meets Steven Reilly who happens to own the garden store below Con's apt. Con starts feeling things for Steven that he hasn't felt in 20 years and denies to Steven and himself that he is gay.
This was s sweet easy read with so kinky sex scenes that make it a little hard to believe that Con is as new to M/M sex as he tries to portray and he keeps denying that he is gay. I enjoyed this book and will definitely read other books by this author.

Nan, I'm going to PM Jingles...since I set an alarm to get up for the midnight roll, I want to know if we are going to need to use our free pass or not. I'll pop back in when and if I hear from her.

PM sent! Hopefully, it's just a case of GoodReads not sending her notifications from this thread, and not that she has to leave us!

I am in the US on Central Standard Time. I always make it a point to have my review in prior to the Thursday cut off so that you all can roll the dice early. Have I failed to do that?
Nan, I am almost finished with my book. It's Tuesday night here, 7:38 pm, so I'm quite sure I can have my review posted by Thursday night without a problem. If I need to have my review posted prior to Thursday night, then please let me know.
The thing that just absolutely blows my mind is, to my knowledge, I don't think I've ever failed to post my review on time. And just because I don't post the book I intend to read for the week, does not indicate I'm not going to do what I'm supposed to.
I do have alot going on right now. I'm in the process of moving, I work very long hours (having just gotten home from work in fact), so I haven't been as active as I would like to be. However, again - I've never failed to post my review on time that I know of.
If you all feel the need to replace me, that's fine.

The past three weeks you have posted your choice so when you didn't we weren't sure what happened.

Shelter Mountain - series book #2

If something comes up and you can't finish in time just let us know.

TASK: SERIES BOOK #2
Shelter Mountain|Robyn Carr

Read from: 09/21/14 - 09/23/14
Rating: ★★★★
This second book of the Virgin River series by Robyn Carr was just as great as the first one. John Middleton (better known as "Preacher") is an ex-Marine who now lives life in small town Virgin River, and is the cook in the local bar. Paige Lassiter is on the run from her very abusive ex-husband and finds herself in Virgin River.
There are several stories going on all at once, which I found to be somewhat distracting, but overall it was an enjoyable read.
Preacher - a big man who seems larger than life, came across as a gentle giant, which I loved. Paige found that she was stronger than she thought she could ever be.
Overall, it was a 4 star read for me and I look forward to book #3.

No problem, Trea. All is well.

If something comes up and you can't finish i..."
Thanks, Nan.

In this second book of the series, Mercy is struggling to learn about her new powers as a Taylor witch, an Anchor of the Savannah line of power. To complicate things, she is pregnant, in love, but undecided on marriage. She desperately wants to find her sister, who disappeared at the end of the first book in the series but has been forbidden by the other Anchor Witches to do so. On top of this, her mother, who supposedly died during childbirth turns up! Life is so confusing for this young witch!
This book is not only a good story, but develops many themes, such as the importance of family, tradition, and the struggle of good versus evil. An easy read, and a good character story, I would recommend to those who like a little romance and fantasy in their stories.

We are on space 35 this week!
This means we can read the 3rd book in a series, the 5th book in a series, the 35th book in a series, or a book with the Author name of K.

I will continue with the Witching Savannah series, bringing me up to date with J. D. Horns publications.

Over time I have really started to get into dark books with lots of angst and this book didn't fail to deliver. Tucker had suffered abuse in the past from a boyfriend and because of that he started cutting himself and attempted suicide several times before meeting Jesse. Jesse had been a marine that was injured and forced to leave the marines. He had been in the closet for years and it was right after he returned home that he met Tucker.
Both men had serious issues to deal with and Tucker especially had trust issues due to his past and he was afraid to let Jesse into his life. He was afraid Jesse would go back to his girlfriend and and would continue to stay in the closet inorder to stay emotionally safe. Jesse finally started to open up to Tucker and standup for what he wanted and yet Tucker still didn't tell Jesse what had happened to him in the past. There were so many misunderstandings between Jesse and Tucker which lead to Tucker almost killing himself buy cutting too deeply.
I found this book a little hard to get into in the bginning but as i got farther into the story I felt more and more in love with Jesse and Tucker. Kade Boehme is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and can't wait to read more of his books.

I loved this book!! Allison is our heroine...lost in a dystopian world where the Red Lung disease has decimated the human race leaving the survivors in three categories: humans, vampires and rabids. The only race that is living are the humans, with vampires and rabids alike hunting them for their blood. Allison begins life living on the Fringe as a human, with survival a day to day fight. Some humans have sold out to the vampires for protection from the malignant devolved rabids, paying for their protection with their blood. One day while Allison is out scavenging for food she is attacked by rabids, and lays dying in the dirt. But then a vampire appears and gives her a choice; to live as an undead vampire, or to die.
This story evolves well with a good story line that keeps you hooked. It is a young adult story, with a doomed romance side story. I really liked it and downloaded the second in the series in hopes we get a 2 next roll!

I loved this book, maybe even better than book #1 in the series.
Mal is a drummer in a band Stage Dive, who needs a fake girlfriend, for some unknown reason. Anne got stiffed for the rent from her used to be friend. Enter Mal to the rescue, in return for rent and furniture, Anne becomes the fake girlfriend.
This book had my laughing out loud one minute then crying the next. I really felt the depth in these characters, more so than the first book in the series.

TASK: SERIES BOOK #5
An Incomplete Revenge|Jacqueline Winspear

Read from: 09/26/14 - 09/27/14

Brief Review
Book five of the Maisie Dobbs series finds the country in great turmoil, and Maisie unsure of her future.
Maisie has been asked by long-time friend James Compton to investigate some mysterious crimes surrounding the area where he intends to purchase a large estate. Set in the late 1930's post WWI, the vivid descriptions of the mind set of the people, the economic difficulties, and how everyone is trying to adjust and go on with life after war, it causes you to stop and think, and wonder what was really like during the aftermath of that war.
Over all it was a great book and I am so looking forward to book #6.

Review:
When I first started the Gin Blanco series, I didn't care for it, mainly because I loved the author's Bigtime series more. I read the first two books of this series, and not 25% into the third, I quit it in disgust, thinking I'd never make it back to the series. However, this series would haunt me upon my return to GoodReads. Everywhere I turned, it seemed, someone was raving about this series. Finally, I got up enough nerve to try it again. My journey with this series since then has been a roller coaster of ups and downs.
Upon reading the first couple of books in the series, it was clear where it had to go: Gin takes on Mab Monroe, the Fire Elemental that murdered her mother and older sister. Gin's the good guy, she has to win, it's a moral imperative. So, imagine my surprise when she (view spoiler) It was so very sloppy, and so very out of character for Gin. Those events, and the events leading up to them, made the book drag a bit for me. The final showdown also dragged a bit as well, seeming like a Gunfight at the OK Corral, more so than the intricate dance it should have been between the two powerhouses. Those two things really dragged this book down from a 5 star rating in my eyes.
Don't get me wrong, this is a very good book and an excellent way to plateau the series, while Gin figures out what to do next. However, the pacing just felt to be one step off for me, and it impacted the story. I did enjoy the ending quite a bit, and will be waiting to see where Gin goes from here.

Feel better soon

Thanks, Nan! Thing of it is, this cold has me up at all hours anyway, so we'll see how things end up this week.

I'm actually feeling a good bit better, now that I have decent medicine that is breaking this creepy crud up! I'll be up at my standard 1am EDT, making the roll, so hopefully that will help you make your pick!

I know what you mean! I read the first three books in the last SS Challenge, and was so glad to pick it up again! Have you read any of the books that are a .5? For instance I think there is one that is numbered in the series 3.5. I know it wouldn't work for this series of challenges, and I am thinking that I can go back and pick those up. Usually the .5 books are written afterwards anyway, so it shouldn't hurt to continue with the series without them.

I don't normally read the .5 books just because I get most of my ebooks from my local library. They have been buying more of the novellas and .5 books, just not all. I am too cheap to spend much money on buying books or ebooks, especially since I work at the library and have so much access. :)

Working in a library! A dream job for sure. I was working as an assistant in a middle school library but needed to switch back to substitute teaching. I pick up media center jobs whenever I can just to be around the books and kids!

4th in a Series

I love this series! Charley is a Grim Reaper. That's right, she sees dead people. And her on again, off again boyfriend is the son of Satan. Literally. (We can't help the families we are born into, can we?) This book is a continuation of her uproarious adventures as a PI with an unlikely and mostly lovable cast of characters. Harper has been terrorized since she was 5 and comes to Charley for help. No one believes her story except Charley. Meanwhile, Charley is trying to escape the horde of demons that continue to plague her, and recover from the torture and near death experiences found in Book Three.
If you haven't read this series I highly recommend it! Darynda Jones is a gifted author, who writes with tongue-in-cheek humor, sarcasm and just funny one liners. Somehow the author wraps the humor up into a very entertaining story line, that will have you wanting more. I am so glad that this is a Series! I can't wait to find out what trouble Charley gets herself into next.
Yep, I read it in two days...it's that good!

Review:
I was excited when I first won this book, simply because the idea about a romance novel surrounded by a serial killer plot really intrigued me. I had high hopes that it would be something similar to Criminal Minds to read. Imagine my surprise to find out that this was not book one of a series, but book three! My OCD won't let me read books out of order if I know about it ahead of time, so I set out to get the other two books in the series read. It took me a while, but I finally got to this book this weekend.
I remember enjoying the first two books much more than I did this one, even with how flat I felt the heroine of the second book was. The hero and heroine of this book were much worse than that. I understood that Kyle was consumed and obsessed with his sister's disappearance, but he never moved past it until the very end of the book, even when his focus had shifted to Cadence. It made him too vulnerable to the killer, and it seemed like normal procedure got tossed out the window for the convenience of plot, making the story difficult to believe. Cadence also barely shared about her past, and her feelings surrounding the horror she endured. She came across as cold and aloof, instead of being more approachable because of her turmoil.
The killer was also rather unbelievable, especially in his motivations for killing. It seemed rather flimsy a reason for him to kill, as I would have liked to see an underlying psychosis explained to further the reason he killed, as that would have made more sense, due to the fact that he had the power he sought simply given his chosen career field.
When the plot picked up, it picked up quickly, and I dashed to the finish in a couple of hours. However, I wound up finishing two other books while in the middle of this one, and I'm going to have to think about purchasing others in the series after reading this, simply because of that slow start and the faults I found with this story.
