Jacqueline | 2428 comments Series where main character is a strong female? Try Mark Lawrence’s trilogy Book of the Ancestor starting with Red Sister and then Grey Sister. Holy Sister comes out soon. He also wrote a short novel Bound that fits between Grey and Holy Sister. Nona the main character is a strong female lead and she is surrounded by strong female characters.

“It is important, when killing a nun, to bring an army of sufficient size.” ......best opening line ever.

CBRetriever | 6113 comments The Deed of Paksenarrion Series starting with Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon

Paksenarrion — Paks for short — is somebody special. She knows it, even if nobody else does yet. No way will she follow her father's orders to marry the pig farmer down the road. She's off to join the army, even if it means she can never see her family again.

And so her adventure begins... the adventure that transforms her into a hero remembered in songs, chosen by the gods to restore a lost ruler to his throne.

Here is her tale as she lived it.

You could try the first books of the Honor Harrington Series by David Weber, starting with On Basilisk Station On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington, #1) by David Weber . The first 4-5 books were excellent to good, but then David Weber falls progressively into the trap of verbiage, tell instead of show and excessive technical descriptions. However, the first books are worth the read.

Mindy | 63 comments I might get laughed at, but how about THE HUNGER GAMES?

I know it's YA, but it's a really good read with fully developed characters.

message 8: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Not getting laughed at from here Mindy. Just because something is suitable for kids doesn’t mean it’s a kids book. They’re suitable for everyone. Hunger Games is one of these. Sure some kids books are written in a childish manner but many are examples of brilliant story telling that anyone from 8-80 can enjoy. It’s just that because an 8 year old can read it they classify it as Middle grade or YA and it puts many people off. Their loss though.

Along this vein may I also suggest Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas and Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. They are the first books of their respective series.

Trike The various Pern books.

Travis Foster (travismfoster) | 1154 comments The Tamir Triad by Lynn Flewelling is great. And if you're okay with ya, Tamora Pierce has so many good books and series in this vein.

message 11: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1776 comments The October Daye series, by Seanan McGuire, starting with Rosemary and Rue might work. Urvan fantasy series. The main character is generally a strong female, though at times she is also a hot mess.

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Oh and Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series starting with The Eyre Affair. Read that last month. Rather enjoyed it.

CBRetriever | 6113 comments male/female leads as told by male = Jennifer Roberson's Tiger and Del Series is also good

Jo Clayton has a lot of series that have strong female leads particularly the Skeen series and the Diadem series

The Morgaine Saga is excellent with the strongest character being female though it is also told from the hapless male sidekick's point of view. These are also available as the individual books

Elizabeth Haydon's Symphony of Ages series was very interesting

I read The Deed of Paksenarrion Series many years back but still remember it vividly.

message 19: by Histrio (new)

Histrio (histrion) | 18 comments Dealing with Dragons is a humorous four book romp through fairy-tale cliches. Books 1 and 3 are narrated by females who are main characters in the other books.
The A Darker Shade of Magic trilogy has an excellent magic system and great characters.
The Howl's Moving Castle trilogy is just plain charming (Diana Wynne Jones always is)
Ruby Red is a time-travel trilogy with a sweet little romance too.
You could also try The Search for WondLa trilogy, The Raven Boys quartet, or Keeper of the Lost Cities which is 7 books long now, 2 more are expected (this series is one of my personal favorites!).

Remember: no one can have too many favorite books, and a new favorite is always just around the corner!

message 20: by Christine (new)

Christine | 10 comments I am just about to re-read The Deed of Paksenarrion series, so I second that! Loved it, years ago.

I also enthusiastically add my vote to recommend ANYthing by Michelle Sagara West : but especially The Sun Sword series (6 books, high fantasy, all out). (This series she wrote as Michelle West.) SO many strong women in the series. Jewel Markess! Serra Teresa! Serra Diora! Kiriel, in her very weird and wonderful way. Many more.

If you like steampunk, I recommend The Parasol Protectorate series, by Gail Carriger. Alexia Tarrabotti is a great, strong main character- and there are many other female characters, good and misguided, with strong characteristics, throughout the series. Steampunk with humor, and lots of supernaturals. First book is Soulless.

message 21: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (blackfox92) | 12 comments Try Juliet Marillier most of her books are in a series of three with the occassional stand alone. In particular the Shadowfell series, Blackthorn & Grim novels or the Sevenwaters series. Her female characters all have really great emotional depth which I love.
Brandon Sanderson Mistborn series is a favorite and for something a little different, his Way of King's books have multiple POV's with great female personalities that are really refreshing. He does the female characters a lot of justice in his writing and doesn't fall prey to the cliches that some other male writers do when voicing female characters.
Samantha Shannon Bone Season or Priory of the Orange Tree are also good ones to look out for.
And lucky last, Kristin Cashore Graceling books are definetly worth reading.
Hope this helps.

This is a treasure trove, yay!

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments How about The Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin which starts with The Fifth Season? Incredible books, and they fit your criterion of having a strong female character to a T.

message 24: by Karin (last edited Jun 23, 2019 04:14PM) (new)

Karin It's y/a, but the Across the Universe trilogy fits your criteria. The first book was:
a Carnegie Medal Nominee (2012) , Rhode Island Teen Book Award Nominee (2013), Lincoln Award Nominee (2014), Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction and for Goodreads Author (2011),

Another one that fits your criteria that is y/a is the poorly named Bookworm Best Award for Best Fiction (2013) Earth Girl by Janet Edwards and the two other books in the trilogy. The second one won the Bookworm Best Award for Best Series (2014).

message 25: by Trike (new)

Trike I don’t know why this didn’t occur to me earlier but the Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan fits this criteria.

A Natural History of Dragons
The Tropic of Serpents
The Voyage of the Basilisk
In the Labyrinth of Drakes
Within the Sanctuary of Wings

With a new series featuring Lady Trent’s granddaughter starting in September with Turning Darkness Into Light.
