Hi Banjomike,

Thank you very much for the corrections.

The first one is from the Journalist (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...) and the second one is from Love, Hatred and Madness (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...), but it is okay if it is not attributed to books, as far as they are attributed to the author.

Lobstergirl Can these be merged into one. Preferably something that is a full sentence - "the terrible tyranny of the majority" is a phrase, not a sentence. I believe quotes need to be full sentences (something containing a noun and a verb).

anolta | 20 comments Hello, could somebody please correct this Plath quote here:

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/6017...

It is from The Bell Jar, on the last three pages of Chapter 5 and the correct version reads:

"If you expect nothing from somebody you are never disappointed. "

And NOT "If you expect nothing from anybody, you’re never disappointed."

Thanks a lot!

Done. And combined with several other variants.

There is also a much older version which reads "Blessed is the man who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed"".

I am not sure why this quote is un-editable, because I can modify other quotes.
This is one of those common misquotations perpetrated by the internet:

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/553-...

It reads:

“If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.”
― Adolf Hitler

However, this is a complete distorted summary-paraphrase of what was originally a whole paragraph:

All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.

— Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_lie (I know, wiki is not usually a reliable source, but you can look it up in the book itself, too)

I've added paraphrased as a tag. The full version of the (translated) text is not as pithy as the short version and since it is a paraphrase of a translation there probably isn't a perfect version.

Discuss?

The problem is that it is registered as a "quote", that means, something the person said, but it isn't something he said. There is a crucial distinction with serious ramifications between translating and paraphrasing.

In this case, if you turn two whole paragraphs into one sentence, it is not only paraphrasing, it is an interpretation. For all intents and purposes, it is a misquotation.
