Welcome to 2019! We're closing out 2018 with 3947 comments on the previous thread, sounds like we read a lot of fascinating things last year!

So what's up for this year?

message 2: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I'm starting the year with our two January group reads, because I'm boring like that. Then I plan to finally start The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition, which I've had from the library since it was published. I'm not planning further than that, I don't want to start piling on the reading stress on the first day of the year.

message 3: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I'm running behind on my reviews for December, but I just wrote up my review for Skyward - ★★★★½ - (My Review)

As well as my year as a whole: 2018 on Goodreads - ★★★★☆ - (My Review)

message 4: by Tomas (new)

Tomas Grizzly | 448 comments Three books I've read in the "recent" past (one in November 2018, one in December 2017, and one in summer 2017) had a sequel come out in the past few days. So now I have all the three ebooks on my Kindle and thinking which to hit first.
The most recent, that is still fresh - even though the sequel is only a loose continuation?
The sixth book in a series that had a year-long pause but I remember it pretty well?
The third book in a series of 3x 150 pages that could give my reading challenge a head start (especially if I was to re-read the first two)?
Decisions, decisions...

Rachel | 1405 comments After just barely finishing my planned 2018 reads in the nick of time I’m going to squeeze in Sorcerer of the Wildeeps before starting How Long Til Black Future Month

message 6: by Monica (last edited Jan 01, 2019 07:35AM) (new)

Monica (monicae) | 511 comments My relationship with Stanislaw Lem is lukewarm at best but back in 2012 when I bought my first kindle his books were on sale so I bought two. This month I'm reading/will read The Futurological Congress: From the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy. We'll see how this goes...

message 7: by Conal (new)

Conal (conalo) | 85 comments I am starting out 2019 with Thin Air on audio which and this looks promising in the first couple of hours. I am also reading Split the Party after enjoying the NPC's last month.

message 8: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments Currently in the middle of two winter themed books that I started in December, If on a Winter's Night a Traveler and The Bear and the Nightingale. Both are excellent so far. I'm also reading My Year of Running Dangerously: A Dad, a Daughter, and a Ridiculous Plan as my book that I sneak when the desk isn't busy at work.

message 9: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I'm not reading this, but I found a book with a picture of me on the cover! We should add something like this as a challenge prompt in 2020. It's time to start thinking about 2020 things now, isn't it?

The Rise of the Red Shadow (The Book Of Deacon Series 0) by Joseph R. Lallo

I'm starting off with my Christmas gifts: In a Glass Darkly and William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, A New Hope.

message 12: by Mareike (new)

Mareike | 1457 comments I finished Tigana today (such a beautiful book! Can't wait to read more by Guy Gavriel Kay!)

I also started the audiobook of Future Home of the Living God which is narrated by Louise Erdrich herself and she does so really well.

message 13: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Mareike, you're in for a treat, Guy Gavriel Kay has written MANY great books

OMG! Are Dread Foxen a thing in Finland, like not needing sleep? Here we just consume a lot and I do consider that a super power, thanks for asking.

Melanie, how perfectly festive of you! I hope you like them, they both sound fun.

Mareike!! I can't wait to hear what you think of Future Home and yes, GGK is wonderful, I'm so glad to have finally read something of his, can't wait for more!

message 15: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller | 4 comments I am finishing up with The Hatching, which is just okay.

Starting Old Man's War tonight.

message 16: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments The Word Is Murder was interesting. It felt like a modernized & milder form of Sherlock Holmes. Story was fun but I felt a bit weird about the main character being Anthony Horowitz. It was like I was listening to an embellished biography.

Plan to crack open my hardback of Gardens on the Moon tonight. Anyone post in the thread for that yet?

About halfway done with War Aeternus: The Beginning (LitRPG) by Charles Dean. So far, I like the story and the different take for the main character. I have my fingers crossed that it will end on a satisfying note.

message 17: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14220 comments Mod
Yep! Gardens is up! It was a group read, so we've coopted its "finished reading" thread :D

message 18: by Udayan (new)

Udayan | 65 comments I am reading the Iain M Bank’s Player of Games as my first book of this year. Don’t know why I kept the amazing Culture series of books pending for so long.

message 19: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I'm being completely slack. Haven't picked up a book in two days. Was thinking about Brandon Sanderson's newie Skyward or maybe Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb. Or I might get back to Leviathans Wake. Or so any others I have waiting for me. Or I might just watch Netflix since I'm at the farm with unlimited internet. Whatever it is I shall enjoy your t immensely. And then tomorrow my daughter comes home and we pick up our puppies and all peace will be completely gone. Forever lol Boy I hope he's a snugly boy who hangs quietly while I read. Probably not lol

message 20: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments Train him to be snuggly! Active is good though. It's nice to get a walk in between books. =)

message 21: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Well I'm going to have a good go at it anyway. Just been trying to find a puppy school to get the basics down but they're hard to figure be out where I live. Also I'm never in one place long enough.

message 22: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2791 comments Silvana's January SFF reading list:

Jade City (The Green Bone Saga #1) by Fonda Lee Fire & Blood (A Song of Ice and Fire) by George R.R. Martin The Black Tides of Heaven (Tensorate, #1) by J.Y. Yang Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch, #1) by Ann Leckie The Summer Tree (The Fionavar Tapestry #1) by Guy Gavriel Kay

message 23: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments I started my year with finishing two short story collections:

The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon, Volume 4: Thunder and Roses by Theodore Sturgeon, which was a delight to read and I already could tick off one of the TBR challenge topics,

and

the anthology The Year's Best Science Fiction: Fourth Annual Collection, wherein I found one of my fav short stories ever: "Chance" by Connie Willis is just perfect!

Both didn't help much with collecting points in the TimeTravelChallenge, though ;).

I made good with points with A Flight of Broken Wings by Nupur Chowdhury. An urban fantasy which was surprisingly much fun to read (I'm not the urban fantasy type, yet the author asked me to review her book, and it was so nice to chat with her). It was a 3.5 stars read for me, I'm yet contemplating if I should round up or down for my review.

I couldn't use links the last week, since I only came back from travelling yesterday, so I have to add Legion by Brandon Sanderson. The story was only 3 stars, but the mc was 5 stars. Such a terrific idea to work with somebody whose multiple personae realise themselves outside the host, so that this one man indeed is legion. I already bought the second novel. Thank you for the recommendation, Soo!

message 24: by Mareike (last edited Jan 02, 2019 06:01PM) (new)

Mareike | 1457 comments @ Don: So I've heard! I've already signed up gor a BR of The Lions of Al-Rassan.

@ Allison: I'll post in the BR thread as I progress with Erdrich's book. I'll also post some more about Tigana. I just need to find all those scenes I loved again.

Lizzie (lizzie_bobbins) | 92 comments If I ever finish reading The Terror by Dan Simmons (which I feel like I have been reading forever), I'm going to try and focus on some shorter books for the rest of January!

I haven't read Tigana and A Song for Arbonne by Guy Gavriel Kay since I was in my teens, so I feel like I should really read them both again at some point, maybe once I have got through this year's reading challenge.

message 28: by Jim (new)

Jim Gorman | 33 comments My library sci-fi/fantasy book club is reading Walkaway my Doctrow for January, so that is my current read.

message 29: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments @Conal just finished THIN AIR. If you like THIRTEEN or the Takeshi Kovacs books you will almost certainly enjoy it!

message 30: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments War Aeternus: The Beginning was pretty good! Solid start to a new series and interesting take on plot + characters. There are some clunky parts to the story but it didn't detract enough to spoil the book for me. I already have the second audio & listening to it. Not a bad intro into LitRPG if anyone is looking.

I just saw that Catseye is up for this month. I will try to get that in.

message 31: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (kurikara) | 2 comments Well this lovely January I plan on continuing my James Patterson binge reading, I also got the new Game of thrones book too, I know i will be reading that this month. I know i am getting an kindle this weekend so any idea's to read for my job (when i am on break) be awesome. :D

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2717 comments I've carried over my Harry Potter reread, and am about halfway through Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Once I'm finished the series, I'll finally get to Amberlough and then Dragon Wing for BRs.

Pam Baddeley Catch up of last few books of 2018 - read Keith Badman's Marilyn Monroe: The Final Years - review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2639561849 and
The One-Armed Queen by Jane Yolen - review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2628671752.

message 34: by Robert (new)

Robert Collins Yesterday I finished Year Zero. The premise is that aliens have been listening to our music for years and not paying for it. A lawyer is roped into helping solve the matter, and of course there are aliens who don't want Earth to keep producing good music. It wasn't as funny as I thought it might be, but it was an entertaining read.

message 35: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley Read Gone South by R A McCammon and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2653061378.

message 36: by Trike (new)

Trike Currently reading The Farthest Shore and Babel-17. Finished Nimona, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

message 37: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Udayan, "Player of Games" my favorite of the Culture novel, hope you enjoy it.

message 38: by Don (new)

Don Dunham MadProfessah, was Hakan Veil one cold blooded character or what? The last thing you want to hear from Veil is: "if you talk, I'll let you live".

message 39: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Is reading "The Jensen Brand" seems like a pale imitation of Louis L'Amour. Might have to backtrack to a reread of the Sackett novels.

message 40: by Marie (new)

Marie G | 49 comments I am going to finish within a couple of days.Dread Nation and Why the Germans? Why the Jews?: Envy, Race Hatred, and the Prehistory of the Holocaust. I'm still reading The Well of Ascension. I just discovered Brandon Sanderson, and I am loving it!

message 41: by Joon (new)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments Just started Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo; kind of an impulsive decision to read it. I'm like 10% in and it's really grabbed me.

After that it's likely Skyward and Dragon Wing though that is already an ambitious January but I want a strong start to the year.

message 42: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Marie, you are discovering Sanderson in the right place, "The Mistborn Trilogy" is his Magnum Opus.

message 43: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments War Aeternus series by Charles Dean: 1-3 Audio, 4 Kindle
I really enjoyed the first two books and rolled right into the third. Well, the story took an odd turn in book 3 and that toned down my enjoyment. 4th book is only on Kindle and I'm reading it now because I want to see if the change will be explained and resolved. Sadly, there are formatting errors and editing mistakes, but I'm going to read it because I'm hoping to get some answers. *fingers crossed* I really liked the first two books!

Mira's Last Dance was interesting. I thought it was an okay story when I finished it, but, upon reflection, I realized it was a great story. The novella seems simple at first glance but it prods the reader to ask questions. I like that.

Current Books:
Gardens of the Moon
Firelight
War Aeternus 4: Harbinger of Ash

message 44: by Ariana (new)

Ariana | 659 comments I recently finished On a Red Station, Drifting which was great. Looking forward to reading more from that universe (novellas, short fiction, etc.)
I also just read The Witch Boy, which was wonderful. (Thanks to Rose for the rec from the best of 2018 thread!)
2019 reading off to a good start!

message 45: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments Hakan Veil isn’t really that different from Takeshi Kovacs in Altered Carbon or Carl Marsalis in Thirteen.

Morgan’s main characters are often very hard-boiled and violent, but the motivation/reasons for the behavior are usually included.

message 46: by Karen (new)

Karen (librarykatz) | 262 comments Starting my year off with a reread of Soulless and will continue with the series throughout the year.

I've also started The House with a Clock in Its Walls since I want to see the movie.

Continuing to read Shadow of Night and also plan to complete the series this year.

I've decided that's how I should do things, too. If I like the movie, chances are I'll like the book. Loving the book first means I'll hate the movie. I've heard good things about both!!

Soo (silverlyn) | 1007 comments The House with a Clock in It's Walls is the Audible Daily sale today for $1.99. =)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments I grew up reading John Bellairs' books, they are the reason I grew to love reading.

I've always wanted to go back and reread them, but I'm definitely afraid of spoiling that nostalgia.
