Kerri_M | 590 comments Just finished The Juliet Code by AA Christine Wells.

My last 2019 challenge book. I like the story (WWII based on true events) but the writing was a little bit choppy in places.

The Juliet Code by Christine Wells ★★★☆

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments Alice Hoffman has written some very popular novels, but Everything My Mother Taught Me is a short story that's included in the new Amazon Original Stories series. I was VERY happy with what the daughter learned!

Mark (jaded62) I finished this yesterday and found it a real effort doing so. Unlike Touch and Harry August (both great books) I couldn't relate to Abbey and the other characters. Perhaps if the novel was shorter...

Jeanette | 400 comments Gravity Is the Thing by Jaclyn Moriarty

3 stars

This book was like reading something one would read on social media, it even had descriptions of food (s/media photos of food), from the café and food for Oscar and the selfie descriptions etc. It bored me to tears.

Jeanette | 400 comments The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

4 stars

Having read the French version of Suite Française (which took me about 2 years as it is written in old Perfect Tense French) which is an acclaimed and magnificent book at first look, The Nightingale has a few similarities, however whilst this book is a lovely read there is no comparison.

Carolyn | 9836 comments Death of a Red Heroine (Inspector Chen Cao #1) by Qiu Xiaolong Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xiaolong, a murder mystery set in 1990s Shanghai, written in English (ie not translated) by a Chinese author now living in the US. Interesting for it's insights into the political control of everyday Chinese life.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9973 comments I very much enjoyed my fourth outing with Sulari Gentill's Rowland Sinclair and co in A Decline in Prophets. (It's book #2 but I have already read the prequel, #1 and #9.) I'm very pleased that I have at least another seven in this excellent series to look forward to.

Krystal (krystallee6363) | 2304 comments Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff has certainly left me keen for book 3! Alas, I'll have to wait til they re-release Darkdawn in the same size format as my copies of books 1 and 2.

It's certainly a difficult topic to write about but I thought she did a good job keeping it simple without dwelling on it and moving on to the effect on the adult victim.

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments A must-have to keep around for visitors (after you read them yourself)!
Midwinter Mysteries: A Christmas Crime Anthology is a collection of short, entertaining mysteries with only the season in common. Dates range from 1665 to today. I always love Graham Brack's Prague police stories, and his is the first.
