Carolyn | 9836 comments For some reason (totally unplanned!) I've fallen into reading a string of novels centred around abusive men (The Perfect Wife, The Marriage Betrayal, The Ex, The Family Upstairs, All the Lovely Pieces, The Third Mrs. Durst, Cold Woods, The Great Alone, A Nearly Normal Family) and needed something amusing to cheer me up.

The Drop (Slough House, #5.5) by Mick Herron The Drop a short novella by Mick Herron (as recommended by Marianne) was just the ticket!

It's good to move the genres around a bit isn't it Carolyn :)

message 1765: by Carolyn (last edited Jul 19, 2019 12:40AM) (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments Definitely Brenda! I'm over the controlling, abusive male sub genre for now!
Maybe I need to read some romance ;)

Or perhaps some fantasy. Or better yet, the one I just finished - The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Circle - that one couldn't be further from what you've been reading :)

message 1767: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments I've had my eye on that one Brenda. It does sound good!
I've just started a dystopian, futuristic novel The Warehouse and from the library The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths. I'm crossing my fingers that neither feature nasty controlling men or domestic abuse!

Glad you enjoyed it, Carolyn. Can't really go wrong with the Jackson Lamb books

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Thanks to Sapere Books for this reissue of Casualties: Relationships are shattered after the trauma of WWII by Lynne Reid Banks. Moving and thought-provoking, and I learned some things about WW2 in the Netherlands that I had not come across in other books, or from my family's experiences.
Originally published in 1986, it doesn't feel at all dated.

How did you get that one Carolyn? I saw it was over $9 on Amazon which is a lot for a novella!

I've had it on the kindle since last year so I can't remember what it cost, but I'm too stingy to pay that much for a novella - maybe a top new novel occasionally. I don't usually buy novellas at all so maybe it was a special that caught my eye.

PattyMacDotComma | 3297 comments It was a treat to re-read One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson. I liked it even better than before. First published in 2007, it was re-released along with the rest of the Jackson Brodie series to get us warmed up for #5.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments I'd say it's a close thing, but I think that Sophie Green's latest novel, The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Circle is probably even better than The Inaugural Meeting of the Fairvale Ladies Book Club. Four strong, brave women and some great male characters too!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments The Gameshouse is a series of three novellas by British author Claire North.
I thought #1 The Serpent was pretty good 4★s (would have been 4.5★s but for the missing quote marks for speech)
#2 The Thief was brilliant 5★s but
#3 The Master was a bit disappointing. I got bored in the middle and, after a rather bloodthirsty climax, I thought the end was predictable. 3.5★s
