Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Someone needs to break that four way tie! Of course it's also possible to magic one of the books lower down the list to 18 votes. I could choose one of the books with 17 votes and give it my vote, but I'd rather it come from someone who actually wants to read one of those books with the reread group.

Voting will end very early tomorrow, and I'll post the results both here and in the buddy read thread, so we can try and find a schedule that suits most people.

message 155: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Why don’t we have a run off poll for that 6th book? Just among those 4.

message 156: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Someone already changed their votes, right now we do have a top 6:

Black Company 19
Lathe of Heaven 19
Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet 19
Canticle for Leibowitz 18
City of Stairs 18
Library at Mount Char 18

message 157: by Darshan (new)

Darshan Sharma (darshansharma) I want to know more about Black company. It is at top. I have never read it. I do like to read sci fi books however.

This is one of the earliest books of grimdark fantasy, so it is quite influential

That's one of the ones I'm planning to read. I've been wanting to read it for a while, and it's in my TBR challenge.

VOTE HERE

message 168: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I just finished voting. I voted for about 27 books, using my usual tactic of voting for all the eligible standalone books I haven’t read yet. Go standalones! :)

message 169: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments I also voted. I have no idea how many I voted for, but this time my criteria was “Already owned” both unread AnD rereads and books I know I can get at the library. I’m trying to read the books I have on my shelves!

message 170: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments I went back and counted: 50 books I’d be willing to read or reread (i.e. skim).

message 171: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments There's a certain book I've been voting for every time. As usual, it's just me and maybe one other person who cares about it. It'll have its day in the sun someday...(maybe I'll initiate a buddy read for it at some point?) In the meantime, there's at least one other I voted for that seems to be popular. Fingers crossed!

Which one is it? I'll go and vote for it.

message 174: by Beth (new)

There's nothing wrong with campaigning for the one you want. Other people may not have considered it and will look at it closer.

Amazing. Provisional rule: I will vote for anything that has had a cheer composed for it.

I've already read this, but going to vote now!!

message 179: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3168 comments I voted for it too. Gawking at the 1000+ pages but I’ve been meaning to try Jacqueline Carey for awhile.

message 180: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I really want to read that Kushiel series, but I can’t fit it in this year. I tentatively have it planned for 2020 though, so I’ll appreciate the additional discussion in the threads if it gets read this year! I read a short story set in that universe a few months ago and really liked it. I think. Well, I had mixed feelings about it, but it really held my attention.

I’m happy to see Embassytown holding out near the top as I voted for it, I own it, and I was planning to read it this year anyway. In the next tier down, I voted for Fuzzy Nation and Seveneves, but I have mixed feelings about Seveneves winning. I own the book, so I need to read it, but I’ve had a lukewarm reaction to the other Stephenson books I’ve read and this one is a bit long. And I have zero DNF skills. So anybody who wants to torture me, vote for Seveneves. :p

message 181: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments Excellent cheer!

I voted for Kushiel's Dart because I picked it up as a free e-book a while ago and despite being intimidated by how long it is.

I just checked and it is up to 9 votes.

I don't think anything else I voted for is anywhere near the top right now.

message 182: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Kushiel is now at the top of the list with 9 votes :D

message 183: by Gabi (new)

Gabi | 3441 comments Anna wrote: "Kushiel is now at the top of the list with 9 votes :D"

That's the way to go XD. I never heard of this one - and here I thought I went through all the 1000 pagers from the group shelf. Voted for it as well ;).

message 184: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments Anna wrote: "Kushiel is now at the top of the list with 9 votes :D"

Is this what it's like to be an "influencer"? :D Seriously, thanks for the votes, everyone.

Gabi wrote: "I never heard of this one - and here I thought I went through all the 1000 pagers from the group shelf...."

It was well-known in its day... which was, admittedly, almost 20 years ago. My hardback is "only" 700-something pages long, not a short read!

message 185: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments Beth, yes! :D And Kushiel is now up to 11 votes, with All the Birds in second place with 9 votes, and everything else with 8 or less.

message 186: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments All the Birds seems preferable to me - I read Kushiel's Dart and didn't like it at all. It seemed to (view spoiler)

message 187: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments If we do wind up reading Kushiel's Dart, I'll probably swap it in as my Book that Intimidates Me for the SFF TBR challenge.

message 188: by 〰️Beth〰️ (last edited May 01, 2019 10:41AM) (new)

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 62 comments I am new to the group and as much as I would love to read Kushiel’s Dart I had to choose something shorter to read because my monthly plan is long. Will swap some out if it is the winner.

Go All the Birds.......!

Welcome, Beth! When the finalists are all up, you should help us figure out the schedule for reading them in the Buddy Read thread! We try to get as many active participants as possible per month :)

Adrian | 6 comments Hmm none of mine are in the top 6, maybe I need to compose a rhyme 😳 Probably best not

Oh well fingers crossed, still time to change

(And now I’ve voted and commented I will receive updates on this thread so will know that none of mine won, woo hoo 😊)

message 192: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3168 comments Which book is it Adrian? Campaigning is both allowed and encouraged!

message 193: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I nearly forgot that I voted for Dune. My other votes are sliding down the list, but it looks like that one has a good chance of winning.

I’m long overdue to read it, but I kept putting it off because I didn’t want to fit the whole series into my schedule. People elsewhere have assured me it works well, if not better, as a standalone, so I’ve decided to just treat it that way for now. Then I can stop hanging my head in shame whenever conversations about Dune come up. :)

message 194: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments I highly recommend it as a standalone. None of the other books in the series come up to that level of excellence

Thanks, it’s good to read confirmation of that. The consensus in the other discussions I’ve had has been similar, although a couple people did think some of the sequels were worth reading. And it’s not like I can’t change my mind and try them some years down the road if I have the time and interest; I just have too many other things I'm more interested in reading right now.

message 197: by Kateb (new)

Kateb | 959 comments I found it difficult to vote, so many of these books I have read and re read. So many good ones

how many people got to the end of the list?

message 198: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Kateb, I voted for all the ones I’ve previously read (which was the bulk of my votes) or that I already own or know I can get at the library. I’m on a book-buying ban and just want to participate.
