I don't suppose you'll be somewhere with access to a library? My branch has a few copies, although scary few...

NOBODY EAT NEAR THESE BOOKS!!

Great news. You have almost 2 months to learn Cyrillic!

Russia's, like, right there, maybe you can just go sit in St Petersburg and ask someone to translate for you? Every day for a month?

Jemppu | 1735 comments Go spend a red October? 🤔

(I think we could have people in this very house who'd be able to translate. And few individuals manning the register at local grocery store for sure).

The Kindle book of that name is by Richard Layman, not Zelazny unless Layman is an alias

LOL! Well...I *guess* if you wanted to take the easy way, and not be on a train for 10 hours a day...

Chessie, I think the point is that apparently Russian publishers got rights to the digital print version, while the rest of us have to scramble!

Oh, the trains would be the easy part - straight route from here to there, and they like to advertise how quick and effortless it is too... but one doesn't get anywhere in that direction without first going through couple weeks long visa application period.

I think I will try to survive with the kindle edition somehow <:D ...it'll be more affordable.

You might need to check your local one and this is the one I go... I just checked the website. “If you have proof of residential address but don’t yet have a Canadian-issued identification card, you may get a library card by showing a Canadian visa/work permit that has been issued for 6 months or more.”

message 374: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments Ah, I’d forgotten to take into account that A Night in the Lonesome October might not be available on e-book here in the U.S. I had the same problem with Lord of Light last year and had to borrow it from the library. (It looks like that one was finally published on Kindle at the end of last year.)

My library has one copy of Lonesome October. I have no idea if it might be in high demand around October, but the downside of a library book is that I wouldn’t be comfortable hoarding it for an entire month to read a chapter a day. The prices of even the used paperbacks on Amazon are ridiculous when you include their shipping charges. Used prices on Abe Books seem more reasonable, although I’ve never personally bought anything from them because I don’t normally buy physical books.

Assuming it still wins, I might just try the Abe Books route. Then I won’t have to worry about whether I’m hoarding a library book that somebody else wants, and I can donate the book to the library or somewhere after I’m done with it.

message 375: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments Abe is owned by Amazon, so if you look under third party sellers, you should see them

As far as confusing the books, I'm referring to when you set up the threads for the re-read. I'm stupid, I admit, and often simply type the name into Amazon.

message 376: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments CBRetriever wrote: "As far as confusing the books, I'm referring to when you set up the threads for the re-read. I'm stupid, I admit, and often simply type the name into Amazon."

Hmm, I never thought of that. I always click through from the book page or search by ASIN/ISBN. But even if you don't, if you're on a browser, you can see the author if you hover over the link. And the discussion threads have the book linked, so you can see the default cover. Of course those sometimes magically vanish no matter how many times we add them.

message 377: by Allison, Fairy Mod-mother (new)

Allison Hurd | 14221 comments Mod
Ahh, I see, CBR. Yes, we'll be careful with the re-read, should it materialize!

Jemppu | 1735 comments Would this listing on Rakuten Kobo be of help to anyone for Lonesome October ebook? It's unavailable to FIN, but perhaps elsewhere?

message 379: by Anthony (new)

Anthony (albinokid) | 1478 comments Sadly, no, that link doesn’t work in the US.

message 380: by Jemppu (last edited Aug 08, 2019 10:32AM) (new)

message 383: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10435 comments If Lord of Light appeared a couple of months after we read it, then surely Lonesome October will be available for an October 2020 reread at the very latest!

CBRetriever | 6117 comments it took about 8 years for Emergence to show up in a Kindle version and I'm still waiting on Louise Cooper's Indigo series as well as Zenna Henderson's Ingathering: The Complete People Stories

message 385: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments How strange. When I clicked on Jemppu’s link for the Zelazny it came up with a Kindle version for $3.?? . Now normally, Amazon tells me Kindle books aren’t available for purchase since I switched over to the UK site, which I find really tedious. But that’s not the point. Anthony, if you are in Canada, it might be telling you you can’t purchase it. Also, purchasing Kindle books through the app seems impossible (shrug). Try using your browser. Here’s the link again:

you'd be able to purchase it if you stayed on amazon.com with your Country Setting set to the UK. The Country Setting acts as a filter only showing you books available for you to purchase and the price for your region. I stayed with amazon.com when I lived in France and it worked that way. I'd often purchase kindle books as gifts for friends in the US when the price was cheaper for French residents especially if the book was less than $1 for me and $9.99 for them

message 388: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I’m in Australia and it’s telling me I can buy it when I use that link. Which is weird but whatever. Apart from I don’t have a Kindle or Kindle on my phone they’re usually funny about ebooks across countries due to licensing arrangements. It’s $4.60 or something here. Our dollar dropped to around 67 cents yesterday so the exchange rate is horrendous.

Jemppu | 1735 comments "Transferring your account to your local Amazon website"

I'm not at all savvy how Amazon operates, but am wondering, if you have States based connection provider, would the site be determining your location by that ISP - even when you're across the border? You can check your ISP location here: https://www.whoismyisp.org/

message 391: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6117 comments yes, Amazon does check - people have reported getting "You appear to be ordering/purchasing from a Country other than the one in your Country Settings, please correct your location" messages. The country specific Amazon sites are even more restrictive and check more often especially the UK site as they have a lot of expats living on the continent trying to get Kindle books from amazon.co.uk.

I remember one poor guy who got that message every time he tried to buy a book in Singapore even though he lived in Hong Kong as was there 9 months out of the year. At the time, Singapore was a kindle-free country.

Thank you everyone for trying to solve this conundrum. I think we have a lot of leads here and should Lonesome October get selected, we can do more brainstorming then! How is the list looking? Anyone very happy/unhappy with the list as it was last posted? Do we need another member drive?

They're good if a bit dated as far as the attitudes towards women goes. I still enjoyed them and I'm female.
