Hello lovely D&Jers!

I have been rather absent from Goodreads and the reading world this year. I've been very focused on Twitch and playing a lot more video games than ever (and therefore reading less...). I also had a friend come and stay with me for 3 months, which definitely detracted from my reading time! However, I've still managed around 2 or so hours of reading a day, thanks to my commute and lunchbreak at work.

One thing I've been meaning to do since June was start catching up on the D&J Books of the Month that I've not yet read. I thought this could be a fun challenge for anyone else who'd like to do the same. This could also help us to pick up and revive some of the older BotM discussion posts, and perhaps we could even Buddy Read some of our older Books of the Month.

If you want to join in, let everyone know here! I'll be sharing my goal and the books I want to catch up on (plus organising them in an easy way for me to work out what to read next). Please organise your post however you feel :)

Jessica | 431 comments This is a great idea, Rinn! So often I want to participate but I’m either busy with other stuff or I don’t get the book in time.

message 4: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 9 comments I'm in! So many I want to get to; maybe this will push me towards them :-).

I'll go through the bookshelf and make up my list later.

message 5: by Cendaquenta (last edited Aug 19, 2018 07:40PM) (new)

Cendaquenta | 54 comments This sounds good!

Previous BotMs I'd like to catch up on:

Furies of Calderon
The Last Unicorn - ✔ read 19/20th August
Artemis
Leviathan Wakes
Children of Time
The Man in the High Castle

There's also some I've been meaning to reread, would like to do so with a group!

The Lies of Locke Lamora
Uprooted
The Fifth Season
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet
Fahrenheit 451

message 6: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 448 comments Great idea! I also like how you divide your books.

I will try to do the same later.

message 7: by Maria Hill (last edited Jul 26, 2018 02:10PM) (new)

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) Count me in. Books from the group bookshelf that I own and really must read.

Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers
The Grace of Kings by Ken Li
The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi
Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Northern Lights by Philip Pullman - This is a reread :)
A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Parasite by Mira Grant
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss
The Gunslinger by Stephen King - reread
The Martian by Andy Weir
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell Cloud Atlas
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

message 8: by Em (new)

Em (emeralds0ng) | 162 comments I have Kings of the Wyld and Ancillary Sword on my bookshelf, unread. Must catch up on them.

I find it difficult to squeeze in enough reading to complete my library books. I had borrowed the Earthsea Quartet but had to return it as another library user had a reservation on it. I'm sure it's worth buying on Kindle tho'.

Which is all to say I don't carve nearly as much time as I'd like out for reading...!

message 9: by Russell (new)

Russell | 8 comments I’m in. I was away from the BotM list for awhile, but want to get back on track and close out the 2nd half of the year with 15 or so books. This is a great idea. I’ll need to finish The Broken Eye and Reaper at the Gates first, then my catch-ups are:

Record of a Spaceborn Few
The Poppy War
The Long Earth
The Grace of Kings
Beyond Redemption
Black Wing
Six Wakes
The Ghost Brigades
The Shape of Water
The Mirror Empire
All Systems Red
Seveneves
The Shadow of What Was Lost

message 10: by Paul (new)

Paul (subpaul) | 40 comments I love this idea! What better way to celebrate turning 5!
I happen to have just downloaded a mammoth tome of a book (Super Powereds: Year 4), but here are the ones I plan to catch up on:

The Golem and the Djinni
The Anubis Gates
City of Stairs

message 11: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1135 comments I also love this idea! There are several I missed that I'd like to read, but I haven't composed a list yet. A buddy read of one I missed and really want to read would be a big draw for me too.

Just a few popping up on people's lists that I'd be interested in:

The Man in the High Castle
The Long Earth
The Left Hand of Darkness
The Lies of Locke Lamora
Anansi Boys
Ilium

message 12: by Eric (new)

Eric | 72 comments There are many that I missed. I made a list and currently reading Snow Crash.

message 13: by Steve (new)

Steve | 158 comments Love this idea! I missed Seven Eves as it was missing from my library (since found, but I'm on vacation), so I'll definitely be reading that, plus many of the Mod Specials that I've missed. If I can get enough read I'll go back to earlier months from before I joined.

message 16: by Margo (new)

Margo Great idea Rinn! I am trying very hard to only read books that I own to cut down my stack. I will compare what I have to the D&J list sometime today and put up a list.

message 17: by Rinn, Captain of the SSV Normandy (last edited Jul 27, 2018 03:22AM) (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
I'll definitely be working mostly on the books I own, because (as much as I hate to do it), I need to donate some books to charity once read as I'm running out of space. :(

Also, I feel slightly ashamed - as a mod, I'm missing around 45 books of the 140 or so we've read together.

Cupcakes & Machetes (hybridcreature) | 878 comments Mod
Great idea Rinn! There are quite a few that either I haven't read or I read after the group did and I forgot to go back to the discussions.

Roger | 2015 comments Mod
This is a really good idea Rinn, I just ran through our group read backlog and I'm really surprised that I've read so many of our group reads already. There are only two that I have not read that I would like to read...

A Natural History of Dragons
Leviathan Wakes

message 20: by Rinn, Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

message 22: by Hope (last edited Sep 02, 2020 08:21PM) (new)

message 23: by Cendaquenta (new)

Cendaquenta | 54 comments Seems like a lot of people want to read, or reread, the Wayfarers books. Does anyone want to do a group read of them in August, going over "Small Angry Planet" and "Orbit" before joining in the BOTM discussion on "Spaceborn Few"?

Is this all the books? If I copy the list and mark off what I have read will I have them all or do I need to go somewhere to find the full list.

message 25: by Lieke (new)

Lieke | 40 comments I want to reduce my TBR so for now only books that I already own, unfortunately that is only a few books.

Own:
The Blade Itself
The Magicians
Wool

Reread:

Sandy, if you go to the home page of the group and scroll down to the bottom, you'll see a small list of the books we've read as group. Just under that list is an option that says, "more books", click that to get a complete list. It's rather large.

I'll be happy to do a group read of "Orbit" since I need to read it before I can start next month's BOTM! :)

Sandy | 1665 comments It sure it - I found this group a couple years after it was born - a lot of catching up to do. Thought I was doing pretty good until I started looking - but where to start - hmmm - so many good choices - how do you eat an elephant - one bite at a time - or in this case - book.

Roger I am truly impressed! Especially now!

Margo Haha Sandy - that's a very big elephant you've got :-D

Sam (aramsamsam) | 359 comments I love this idea! This year has been very stressful so far and I didn't get as much reading done as I would have wanted. And there have been many great BotM picks ... I'd love to join but don't know if I can fit this challenge in.

It is not going well with reducing my TBR... I went bookshopping this weekend :)
But now I have two more to add tot this little list:
Elantris
American Gods

message 41: by Maximum (new)

Maximum Beans (maximumbeans) | 515 comments So my daj-unread shelf is just the books I missed since joining the group last year. Is the challenge to read all unreads from the entire history of the group?

message 42: by Rinn, Captain of the SSV Normandy (new)

Rinn (rinnsohma) | 3456 comments Mod
It's to read whichever unreads you want from the history of the group :)

message 43: by Maximum (new)

Maximum Beans (maximumbeans) | 515 comments I'll take a look at the group history then I guess and make a list. I'm probably going to end up adding everything I haven't read before, because I'm an obsessive completionist...but ah well. As the great prophet Nostraal D'ermis said, "No skin off my nose".

I just got Small Angry Planet from the library yesterday, I would love to join you with reading that!

message 45: by Kritika (new)

Kritika (spidersilksnowflakes) Part of my problem is that even if I do remember to read a book off of the D&J list, I forget to comment on the discussion threads with my thoughts! So my list is going to be divided into books I've read but want to discuss, and books I want to read. I'm going to keep Discussion books capped to 2018 reads but I'll go back farther for books I want to read.

Read already, Want to Discuss (2018)
The Poppy War
Six Wakes
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
A Conjuring of Light
All Systems Red

Want to Read
The Grace of Kings
Furies of Calderon
Red Sister
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
A Closed and Common Orbit

Anyone else want in?

(Also, should we make our own thread or just perform a bit of the ol' necromancy on the original discussions?)

I think necromancy would be the best option here, to avoid duplicates - plus you can respond to older comments too :D

I'm starting off with Old Man's War, which I have on my Kindle, already halfway through.
