If anyone new is reading this thread and is puzzled by the references to charities, don't worry, it won't cost you a thing. You may (or may not) win some money for your chosen charity, but I make all the donations to charities here in Australia. And you don't need to know anything at all about Aussie Rules, or even have much interest in sport in general, it's really easy and a bit of fun. Ask Suzy!

I would be happy to give it a go, and I'll take up whichever of the teams that Stu was backing last year (can't remember which team that was).
Regarding the charity, do you have an equivalent to The Lullaby Trust?

with a name like that you should be for the PIES!, but they're my mawkit jakes, so hands off! :) welcome to the punt!
here we go - as with last year, I will put my punts into the hands of the goddess (hail eris!), and she will show me a sign that indicates the points divisions - and these will be only the sacred discordian numbers of division, that are 5 17 or 23! :)so,

prediction - PIES! to finish one place better than last season - 12th!
Welcome Grizzly! You are now the proud supporter of the Port Adelaide Football Club, commonly known as Port Power. (I just call them Port.). Your official colours are teal, silver, black and white. Feel free to engage in a stoush with Tech. His team, Collingwood, come from Melbourne, Victoria and are known as The Magpies. They play in vertical black and white stripes. Port Adelaide hail from Adelaide, South Australia. Before they joined the national competition, they reigned supreme in South Australia, playing in vertical black and white stripes and known as The Magpies. So, as you can imagine, when they came under the national umbrella (AFL) in 1997, there was an immediate clash with Collingwood over colours and nicknames. The new boys had to relent but not without plenty of verbal fisticuffs. They also had to have a new club song. Sorry but it's pretty awful:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2cUM...
HOWEVER, their rabid fans always impress me when they start their games singing INXS's Never Tear us Apart:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6y-j...
What do you think of this charity:
https://rednose.com.au/
"We support research into the causes and prevention of sudden infant and child death."
I can look further if you want, but in the meantime, welcome aboard.
I have asked for Week One's tips to be submitted by midnight WEDNESDAY March 21 (your time), buth I can accept them up until 8.15am THURSDAY March 22 (your time) if absolutely necessary.
There are usually 9 games in each round. You just have to nominate which nine teams you think will win. PLUS, for the first game in each round, you have to nominate how many points you think your selection will win by - this could be anything from 1 to 60 or more. There is a donation made on behalf of the punter who gets closest to the mark each week.
So you've got about 10 days1 get tipping!

Thanks for the welcome, and as Port is my favourite tipple that must be a good omen :)
Red Nose is absolutely spot on for the charity; a great choice.
A midnight deadline works well for me: I can get my punts in between getting up and going to work (that's my excuse for poor results in place nice and early) and once I've got my translator set to "Krankie" I'll be able to understand and reply to Tech :)
I'm gonna use a couple of those ten days to do a bit of homework before throwing in my first set of wild guesses :)

Welcome Grizzly! If you click on ‘Ladder’ (next to ‘Fixtures’) it gives the team placings and statistics at the end of last season, which might help. 😀

Heya Grizzly...great to se that you're joining in this madcap of a game! Port Power is a good team, they did very well last year..they could do even better this year! But not as good as my glorious Giants....i'm making a risky prediction that they'll make it to the finals this year..they came so close last year...not bad for team that didn't exist 7 years ago! The Giants and the Suns are the baby teams in the comp.

Plus GG..if you have the time, you could quickly look through, the weeky results for last season, on the AFL site, which will give you a better idea of those better performing teams of last year's season. The Crows were magnificent last year..staying at the top of the leader board throughout the entire season..but didn't quite make it through the final playoffs. I could name the better performing teams to you...but as I'd found out last year...things can change with surprising outcomes!
Many thanks for the warm welcome from everyone, and for the tips :)
I'll stick with THe Lions - they can't be as bad as last season again, can they?Welcome Grizzlygrump, good luck

I've a feeling that the Lions will improve this year...they've been at the bottom for long enough....all the best fresh talent they've had their pick of, for the last few years..ought to have an effect by now!
Here's mine to be starting off with:Tigers - 38
Crows
Saints
Port
Suns
Pies
GIANTS
Demons
Swans
Good luck folks, thanks for doing again Val...so..let the mayhem begin! :)
Here is my first attempt of the season;Tigers 34

One more sleep to go!!!! Get tipping folks. Still waiting on MC, Philip, Steve, Blastro, RedJohn, Deano, Suzy and Grizzly.
Alas I think i'll miss the first game, as i'll be at the hospital for the op tomorrow....would've liked to listen in on the Tigers match...this team is hoping to do the double this year! But something tells me the Crows nigh on impregnable defence might just win out...unless the Bombers new recruits have got themselves sorted...I've read that they could go the distant this year. Anyway...good luck folks....hopefully i'll be around on Sunday to set up the next round of Themes, I should be, but we'll see.
Thanks as ever Val, for this bit of fun on the side (ooo er Missus!)Here's my 'attempt'....a bit late in, but in time methinks!

O.K. my first punt:
Blues by 3

We always kick off the season with this :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_TpH...
I've got my scarf, got my old coat
I've got a footy game to go to
Footy's on, footy's here again
Back to greet me like an old friend, and
That's the thing about
That's what I like about
That's the thing about
The thing about football
I'll meet a friend outside the ground
We'll argue over who's gonna win
He'll go for his team, I for mine
We'll watch 'em slug it out, right to the end, and
That's the thing about
That's what I like about
That's the thing about
The thing about football
Show me the crowd and I'll take my place
I'm hungry, I'm hungry for the taste of it, and
That's the thing about
That's what I like about
That's the thing about
The thing about football
I got a long road to walk down
To catch a tram to my favourite ground
Use my legs, use my voice
Make some noise support the boys, and
That's what football means to me
That's how I like my footy to be, and
That's the thing about
That's what I like about
That's the thing about
The thing about football
Anyone remember Round 1 last year?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBUi0...
Over 90,000 fans expected for tonight's game at the M.C.G.
Val wrote: "If punters could lodge their tips by midnight WEDNESDAY March 21 (your time) it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 8.15am THURSDAY March 22 (your time) if absolutely necessary"So sorry, Val ;o< ... I had absolutely no idea this Thread was up and running again and it looks like I've missed your Deadline ;o<
Yes, I think so too ;o>I'm going to have to read through and catch up first though - is it just me or does it feel like it's been a very long time since we last did this?
Oooh? - "HIYAH GRIZZLY!!!" ;o>
Ohhh I'm pretty fast, kid, even though I limp! ;o>Whenever I go out, I often manage to disappear at some point on whoever is with me because they assume that I will stay put or will only be a slow mover - LOL!!! I don't get to go out very often, and so when I do, then I'm a bit of a devil for just wandering off and exploring ... HA HA HA!!!
Keep up at the back 'cos I ain't slowing down for any stragglers!
Well I'm just home from an amazing production of the musical "Calamity Jane" - great fun and a top night was had by all - so apart from the score, I can't tell you much about tonight's game, except that the trains and buses were packed (with mostly Richmond fans).Richmond Tigers (Philip) v Carlton Blues (RedJohn)
4.4.28 (Q1) 6.1.37
6.11.47 (Q2) 8.3.51
11.14.80 (Q3) 12.4.76
17.19.121 (Q4) 15.5.95
From the AFL website:
"The Blues threatened to spoil the Tigers' party, but the class and experience of the premiers told in the final term, kicking six of the last eight goals to win 17.19 (121) to 15.5 (95) in front of 90,151 fans.
Patrick Cripps (Carlton) was the star on Thursday night though, winning 36 possessions (and a personal best 25 contested) and nine clearances, signaling a big season for the young midfielder.
Exciting Carlton forward Charlie Curnow was also electrifying at times, booting five goals after a pre-season that has seen him stamped as one of the game's rising stars.
The Blues were hit by injury though, with ruckman Matthew Kreuzer spending a long period off the ground with a groin problem and midfield recruit Matt Kennedy troubled by an ankle injury that ended his night in the second quarter."
So it sounds as though the Tigers were a bit slow to get going but were still strong enough to win, while there were some promising signs for RedJohn's Blues, especially if Kreuzer isn't out for too long.
Our winner of the closest margin is Blastro who was spot on with 26 and he pockets $6.00 (time for a slight increase after six years) for his chosen charity, Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation. Well done that man!

Here we are again
Happy as can be
All good pals
And jolly good company
I feel rather cast adrift without having my previous threads on Zon to refer to, but I’m sure we’ll survive. I think this is our seventh year of tipping results in the Australian Football League – otherwise known as Aussie Rules. The season starts up again on Thursday March 22nd so I suppose it’s time to get ourselves limbered up and match fit. Ah, I love the smell of linament in the morning!
The usual suspects are:
Name/team/charity/website
Val - Essendon (The Bombers) - Beyond the Orphanage - http://www.beyondtheorphanage.org/
Anita - Sydney Swans - The Mirabel Foundation - http://www.mirabelfoundation.org.au/
Lez - St Kilda (The Saints)- Alzheimer’s Australia - http://www.alzheimers.org.au/
M.C. - Geelong (The Cats) - Edgar's Mission - http://www.edgarsmission.org.au/
The Foe - Melbourne (The Demons) - Launch Housing - http://www.launchhousing.org.au/
David - Brisbane (The Lions) - The Song Room - http://www.songroom.org.au/home/intro...
Philip - Richmond (The Tigers) - Canteen - http://www.canteen.org.au/
SJ Brooke- North Melbourne (The Kangaroos) - Swags for Homeless - http://www.swags.org.au/
Tech Sergeant - Collingwood (The Magpies) - Oscar’s Law - http://www.oscarslaw.org/
Blastro - Footscray (The Western Bulldogs) - Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation - http://zaidee.org/
RedJohn -Carlton (The Blues) - Fr Bob Maguire Foundation - http://fatherbob.org.au/
SussexWelsh - West Coast (The Eagles) - Save The Bilby Fund - http://www.savethebilbyfund.com/onlin...
Deano - Adelaide (The Crows) - Sacred Heart Mission - http://www.sacredheartmission.org/
Suzy - Gold Coast (The Suns) - Even Keel - http://evenkeel.org.au/
The Duke – Greater Western Sydney (The Giants) – Insight - http://www.insightvision.org.au/
I hope MC is feeling up to participating again – he’s doing well on the Premier League punting!
We’ve lost RABB, Stu and probably Wharf Rat along the way, so there are three teams pleading hopefully to be adopted – they are Hawthorn (The Hawks), Port Adelaide (The Power) and Fremantle (The Dockers). RABB (followed by Stu) supported The Australian Children's Music Foundation (http://acmf.com.au/), Wharfy liked The Australian Himalayan Foundation (http://www.australianhimalayanfoundat...) but if we are lucky enough to recruit some new talent, they can choose any charity they like.
So if you lot can confirm that 1) you want to be in it and 2) any changes to your team or charity, we can get this show on the road. And if you see any likely punters on other threads, feel free to direct them over here. Should we get more than three, I am happy to double up with teams but perhaps a different charity if the new tipster wants to.
So get cracking folks and I’ll have the first week’s fixtures up soon.
