Eldarwen | 2200 comments Immortals stamp has been requested!

message 152: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments Now we just need the Free Space to tie some of these stamps together. :)

Done and cleaned up from our fundraising dinner. And I can't decide what to read. I even turned on the TV for awhile, but that sucks as usual. :D I have about 1000 books I could read sitting here in my house, but I think I'm going to go to the library and pick out something new. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Hope the dinner went well! :-)

Yeah, sometimes no matter how many books you have at your disposal, they simply aren't what you want to read. Fingers crossed the library will bring some inspiration!

message 154: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments Went to the library - picked out The Orphan Keeper - went home - read about 20 pages - put it down and picked up a book I already had - am now 3/4 done Hell Gate - stopped to watch the end of the Women's Curling - am now going to finish my book. And the dinner went quite well thank you.

Review
I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Bella, Zsadist and by extension Phury.

The story picks up shortly after where the previous book ended with Bella having been taken and Zsadist going nuts over his need to find her. His character development in particular was spectacular. Of course, in a way, it was foreseeable what would happen, but the joy in reading these books is seeing the characters struggle to get to where they're supposed to be. Zsadist's path certainly wasn't the easiest and I wanted to strangle him so many times over being such a stubborn git but I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it.

Bella is way more kick-ass than I initially expected her to be and I loved that she didn't need to be rescued but that she had things fairly well handed, despite everything she'd been through and despite the crappy situations all around.

Phury.. well, he's a different matter and I hope that his development will be just as nice as Zsadist's once the series gets to his story.

John almost made me cry though. That kid is just fabulous and I cannot wait to read about his further development, especially after all that happened to him in this book.

Tatenisha | 405 comments I hope I enjoy it too. I love the BDB series and hope I can get into another good series.

message 164: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments WTG Eldarwen.

I've never read any Black Dagger Brotherhood and I kind of suspect it might not be my thing. But I'll get around to trying it eventually, like I do with pretty much everything "big". :D

And bravo us with two shelves done. :D

message 165: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments The first book of DBD had its issues and I wasn't all too fond of the main characters, but the rest of the crew was great. So I was thinking maybe I'll give it another go. It took me quite a while but then I read the second one at the beginning of the month and loved it :-)

message 166: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments I always give a series at least two books before I give up, seems only fair. :) Plus I rarely give up, usually I just put it on a backburner. Sometimes for years.

Shelf tonight. Let's hope we get something that works with the already called shelves.

message 167: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Well, to be honest, I usually do that, too. Sometimes it takes me years to get back to a series as well, sometimes even when I did like it.

For instance, I've been meaning to read the last book in the Parasol Protectorate for quite a long time now but I just never pick it up, even though I actually enjoyed the series.

Yesss, shelf!! Fingers crossed!

message 169: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments Can't quite decide. I want to read a book that is appropriate to this group, but I also really want to read an Agatha Christie. :) I will sleep on it.

message 170: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Detective... hmm.... yes, the obvious choices that come to mind aren't necessarily fitting, but I'm sure there'll be something.

I'll browse a little :-)

message 171: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Allison Ann, you can certainly read Agatha Christie if you want to :)

The shelf is detective after all and there are many more detectives which aren't pnr/uf/sci fi etc.

message 172: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 400 comments So, I read The Next Always, which I thought worked for Part of a Series, but now I can't find it on the shelf. I think I'm just going to read something else. I've had a crazy work schedule this month, and this last week has been terrible, but I will have a book for both shelves soon, I promise!

message 173: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Check the shelves on the book's page. The book may just have slipped off the shelf link as there are only 25 pages now.

As long as the book is tagged "Part of a series", you're good to use it!

Eldarwen | 2200 comments I think I'm going to read The House of Silk (Sherlock Holmes) by Anthony Horowitz for this shelf. It's a book I've owned for ages but never actually read, so this seems like as good a time as any to finally remedy that!

Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton
Shelf: Free Space
How it Fits: Best of Audio
Date Read: 3/29/18
Rating: 3 Stars
Review:
Anita Blake raises people from the dead, kills vampires and works with the police. Vampires are legal and also has laws and you just can't kill them without permission from the law. Anita is forced to look for someone or thing that is killing off the master vampires by the vampire queen.
This book is confusing because you can't figure out what Anita is and whose side she is on. She is "friends" with vampires and will risk her live to save her "friends." She also does not know much about the vampires. This book is full of action and intrigue. There are so many different story lines going on that you have to pay attention or you will most definitely miss something.
This book is not just about vampires, there are all kinds of shifters and the undead in this book.
Its an interesting read and will keep you guessing to the end.

Part of a Series
The Next Always (Inn BoonsBoro, #1) by Nora Roberts
The Next Always by Nora Roberts
How it fits: shelved 22 times as "part of a series"
Date Read: 22 March
Rating: 3 stars
Review:

I seem to pick up Robert's books whenever I can't decide what to read next. She's a great, reliable author and I always enjoy her books. That being said, this one wasn't a favorite. I still liked it and plan on continuing with the series, but I also found it a bit boring. I also think I prefer her books to have a strong sci-fi/fantasy/mystery element to them.

The book/series centers around the three Montgomery brothers who are renovating an old Inn in their hometown. This book focuses on Beckett and his love interest Claire, a widowed mom of three. It was a cute, small-town story, but that was about it. There were a few subplots to move the story along such as the Inn being 'haunted' by a friendly ghost and Claire having a stalker, but neither added much. The ghost was interesting and there was a scene towards the end which was pretty cool, but the ghost could have easily been taken out without changing much. And I suppose Claire's stalker added a bit of tension to the story, but not much.

Again, I ultimately enjoyed it and gave it three stars which is pretty good, but I'm not sure if I'd necessarily recommend it - unless someone's looking specifically for a well written small-town romance with a good family dynamic. I'm still interested in reading the rest of the series, which hopefully is more exciting than this one; though I'm sure I'll still enjoy it regardless.

Lastly, I listened to the audiobook for this and the narration was okay. I enjoyed it well enough, but, like the story, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. I might continue listening to the series, but only if I can get it for free or for cheap, not worth paying more than a few dollars for.

We are up to date! And sorry for the delay. I'll post my selection post for the detective book tomorrow morning - when I finally have a day off work! But, it will most likely be whatever Dresden book I have up next.

First book was a little confusing, true. Doesn't help that you're thrown into the middle of things with the characters already having a clearly established background which the reader isn't fully aware of throughout most of the book.

Glad you seemed to like it though :-)

I don't remember loving the first book, but the next few are pretty damn entertaining. Do you think you'll keep on with the series?

Allison Ann | 414 comments Eldarwen wrote: "Trying to get caught up on the mini challenge? :-)"

Yup. I was a late addition to replace 4-5 people. I feel a little personal pressure to get the mini-challenge done. I can't read 13 books in 3 days, but I can do my best. ;)

message 192: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Yeah we had some bad luck with a huge amount of people disappearing from the challenge. No idea why that is. We never had this many people poof. Oh well..

I'm sure your team will be grateful for every book you manage to get done! :-)

Allison Ann | 414 comments Seems like Spring is when most people drop out of challenges. Maybe its the nice weather, people can go outside and do other things. Forget about their books. Here, of course it is still winter - 2 feet of snow on the ground, a foot of ice still on the lake. Still excellent reading weather. :D

message 194: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Not sure that's the reason. Uno always runs this time of year. Lots of busy people. It's just the way it is sometimes, I guess :-)

Yeah, not so much with the spring here either. It was lovely tonight but we have so so much rain all the time, I'm beginning to wish for spring even though I usually like winter (when it's dry, cold and sunny).
