Thanks, I just want to make sure I don't fall too far behind :)

And I've been meaning to check out the Iron Druid Chronicles, but keep getting distracted by other series. I'll get to it eventually.

message 108: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Iron Druid is definitely worth reading. Oberon, the wolfhound, is a fun addition with his poodle and sausage obsession. And lots of mythological and religious characters thrown in, lots of conflict, lots of ass-kicking and a fair number of deaths with interesting consequences.

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Indeed, Sandra! :-)

The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey, #2) by Julie Kagawa
Book: The Iron Daughter
Author: Julie Kagawa
Date Read: 3/20/18
Rating: 2 Stars
Review: If I wasn't reviewing this for a challenge, it probably would have been 1 star. The first book in the series was a fairly interesting quest novel. This one was nothing but ridiculous, over the top, angsty teenage romantic crap with dramatic declarations of unimportant minutia and a love triangle thrown in for good measure. Also a prom. Yup, the author found a way to get a sparkly dress and two supernatural dates for the geeky girl into her book. I don't think I would have enjoyed this book even when I was an angsty teenage girl.

Sorry, that was about the last comment I made before going to bed. It was about 2.30am, so I felt a bit tired! LOL.

And no I haven't read it yet. They want AU$12 for it on kindle & as I have some of them already I can't justify it. I noticed that one of the other bingo players gave it 5 stars :)

Lol, oops. That was late!!

Ouch, that is a very steep price for a kindle book. I wouldn't be able to justify it either in that case. But good to know that someone here rated it 5 stars :-) I might think about it.

You could read the first one as a standalone if you want. But the prom really just pushed me off the cliff in this one. Of course the "I" titles might mean I'll slog through the next two if I get desperate someday. :D

Tall, Dark & Lonely (Pyte/Sentinel, #1) by R.L. Mathewson

Week Two
Shelf: Immortals
How it fits: Shelved five times
Date Read: March 21, 2018
Rating: 3.5
Review:

Madison has been struggling to take care of her siblings but a forced move to their grandmother's changes her life. Madison new neighbor Ephraim likes his privacy and is hiding a life changing secret. They start a relationship and Madison learns his secret, is amazingly calm about it and agrees to keep his secret.
This book is full of crazy scenes that make you wonder if everyone in this family has neen through so much crap that they believe anything in life can happen and is acceptable. Be ready for a crazy and strange ride through the unnatural world with this dysfunctional family.

Tatenisha | 405 comments I have a question:
How do you check and see if a book is on the group bookshelf without going through all the list?

message 134: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments When you go onto the group's bookshelf, to the left and at the top, there is a little box where you can do a search for a specific title. (It says "add books" but it makes a search first before adding anything.)

GR will then generate a list with that title, or similar ones.
If the book you are looking for is on the group's shelf, then there is a button the right of the book that says "edit" and the book/title is a little blurred (I'm sure there's a better way of explaining that part).
If the book isn't on the shelf, then you have the option to "add to group".

I enjoyed the different pace of this one. There were interesting aspects between characters, new introductions, action if more subdued than usual (which was a nice change in pace, I found).

I can't help but wonder what other plans were involved that nobody yet knows about but I guess if there were more than the obvious ones and the ones already revealed, we'll find out sooner or later!

And just because it needs to be said: the pack's pirate games sound like a lot of fun. The beginning of the book was hilarious.

I'm enjoying it so far. I haven't read an Anita Blake is several years but I needed a book #9 in series and I thought I'd give her another shot. She broke up with all her men at the end of the last book, so I hoped this one would be safe. And so far, so good.

It will stay safe as far as the men are concerned. At least there won't be any unnecessary and terrible sex scenes.
And Edward is just awesome.

Marked in Flesh (The Others, #4) by Anne Bishop
Book: Marked in Flesh
Author: Anne Bishop
Date Read: 24 March
Rating: 4 stars
Review:
I am loving this series!

I really liked this series from the beginning, but didn't feel that invested in it initially. I read the first two about a year ago, really liked them, but didn't feel any strong need to continue with the series. I regret not doing so last year. It's one of those series that I think gets better with each book (as most urban-fantasy books I read). This has a lot to do with the world building. The world building was always great, but as the series continues there's a greater scope the story focuses on and Bishop does a great job continuously extending the world and events beyond Lakeside and have consequences that affect the entire world.

In Marked in Flesh we see the Humans First and Last (HFL) movement become more active in their disregard towards the rules set by the Others and even escalate to large-scale, violent attacks against them. They even attack Humans who don't support them and we see an interesting shift in the human population as many are now unsure in where they stand. There's a lot of new alliances between the Others, Intuits, Simple Life folk, and other humans not supportive of HFL. I really love reading about how the politics play out and how alliances are created and met. Even though this is fantasy, I feel as if this is how things would play out if it really happened.

We also learn more about the people and settlements outside of Lakeside, again broadening the scope of this entire story, which really takes place across the entire world. And we even learn more about the Elders - the really scary Others who live deep in the woods.

Overall, great story and writing and I'm really excited to find out what happens next. There's also been a bit of progress in Meg and Simons relationship, which was both sweet and exciting.

This is the second book in this series I listened to on audio. I wasn't a huge fan of the narration at first, but it's really grown on me and I plan on finishing the series via audiobook.

message 146: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Eurgh, yes! Updating challenges can take an insane amount of time sometimes!! One of the reasons why I reduced mine. I prefer spending that time reading or doing something else :-)

Glad you enjoyed the book! Won't read the review though (as I have with a few others you guys have posted already) since I haven't read the book yet :-)

Obsidian Butterfly (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #9) by Laurell K. Hamilton
Book: Obsidian Butterfly
Author: Laurell K. Hamilton
Date Read: 3/24/18
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review: Another series I loved when I first started it. The terribly numerous and repetitive sex scenes and tedious love triangle killed some of my enjoyment, but this edition has Anita broken up and away from Jean-Claude and Richard. Thus LKH was able to focus on the story and write an interesting book that I didn't have to force myself to read. It's still LKH, so there are tiny moments of completely inappropriate lusting and a few scenes of mild torture porn, but it didn't take over the whole story. Plus Edward, who continues to be fascinating and slightly less evil.

Review:
Chris is a jerk and Isabel is so smart that she is stupid. Chris only focus is his family at the cost to everything else even his mate. Isabel is a computer genius but when it comes to the real world, she needs all the help she can get. I got hooked on this series from the first book and this one was not as good.
When you just want to kill both of the main characters, there are issues. When you learn that you are being hunted by all unnatural beings and you still attempt to run from the people that are trying to keep you safe, there is a problem. Granted you did not want to be around your jerk of a mate but still, you life should come first.
The only thing that made this book acceptable was that it was also focused on other family members. I will try book three just to see if the series can be redeemed.

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Ooh, sorry to see this was only a 2 star read for you :-(
Characters who are too stupid to live are very annoying in books... but maybe the third book will indeed be better again if it has different main characters.

Review:
Picking up right where the previous book left off, the reader is immediately thrown back into the action and into the extraordinary deep pile of shit Atticus always seems to get himself into. Of course, after some issues and lots of things going wrong, he somehow always ends up manipulating things to go in the exact direction he wants them to go. I guess having some few hundred years to learn the way of life does that.

Zeus was surprisingly disgusting. I had not expected that, but the description was oddly fitting. Diana was a pain.

I'm enjoying the scheming that is going on and still isn't resolved, especially when suddenly more puzzle pieces are thrown onto the table. And the deaths were unexpectedly powerful. That definitely gave this book that little something extra.iew
