What Else Are You Reading in 2018?
ALLEN wrote: "Just picked up Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede."Have to say, I like the title.
@Kaa I only finished the first book with a buddy. It was really good. I have the first 4 books and I at least want to read those.
Scott, you'll have to tell us of Sacre Bleu is as funny as it's made out to be!
I finished The Curse of Chalion and I got along much better with this than my first Bujold. I'm still not huge into romance-heavy books so this was still outside my comfort zone but it read very gothic romance-y and that's fun. The audiobook was both very well done and a bit annoying because there were lots of stutters and laughs and often the execution wasn't how I pictured the characters so it messed up the jokes for me.
Ammonite had a ton of cool ideas and the world was breathtaking. I just didn't like any of the main characters or the plot. Worldbuilding is important to me, but if I have to pick, it's characters first. I want to feel like I know why they do what they do for every move they make. From the jump I couldn't fathom these people.
Now reading Tigana and having a glorious time. It's an amazing epic fantasy so far. Hoping that my infatuation level stays constant.
Also about to start The Fated Sky!

Last night I finished reading Howl's Moving Castle. Another fun read! Not sure what I'll start on next...
ALLEN wrote: "Just picked up Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede."Thanks. Through Wikipedia found a free version on ManyBooks and read it. Entertaining.
Looking to finish up The Singularity Trap this weekend or whenever I get a chance to listen to it. Very enjoyable listen! Also looking to finish up Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death. It's ok, pretty slow paced but good for reading before bed. I had grabbed the second book but returned it to the library since the first one isn't making me want to continue on.
Started Dark Witch and already grabbed the rest of the series. This is only the second series by Nora Roberts I've tried and, like the first, revolves around her world of magick. Not sure if I'm interested in trying any of her contemporary works, not my typical genre.
Think I'm also going to start refocusing on Ink and Bone. I've been letting it collect dust on my kindle. The same with The Lies of Locke Lamora. FOCUSFOCUSFOCUS =)
Focus is a problem, isn't it? I'm really hoping this audiobook of Eye of the World comes in soon so that I can power through the last 25% that I've been trying to finish since...April?
I started Sex Object by Jessica Valenti yesterday because I sometimes like to read non-fiction in between novels. It's a deeply personal book and at the same time I've had multiple moments of going 'Oh, yes, I know that situation.'
I finally finished The Copper Promise, which I've been reading off and on for about 2 months. (More off than on.) I'm glad it's pretty much standalone, because I definitely won't be continuing that series. Also read The Game's Afoot; Or Holmes for the Holidays - a play I might be performing in in November/December. It seems like a lot of fun, so fingers crossed.
This morning I started The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant. Not very far in, but seems like it has potential.
I was stuck at my friends house without a book or my phone (long story) so I borrowed a book off her shelf. That book was Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch and I am loving it!

(I'm so excited for the TV adaptation!)

I am, too, and I didn't even like the book that much! :)
Started on A Reaper at The Gates (Ember of Ashes #3), a lighter read after 3 back to back heavy novels.
I am currently reading Dream Country by Shannon Gibney, which I think is realistic fiction, but so far it's been set in 2008 in a Minneapolis suburb and 1926 in Liberia, so maybe not. It came out last week and the author is the friend of my friend. Before that I read the anthology After: Nineteen Stories of Apocalypse and Dystopia edited by Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling. I loved some stories and liked others, there were no clunkers.
The Wind in His Heart by Charles de Lint was before that. I'm a Charles de Lint junkie, but I hadn't gotten around to reading this novel for adults yet. DeLint's books make me glad to be a reader.
Before that, I read Isra-Isle by Nava Semel, which is alternate history/ magical realism and history.
Just started Year One
and am finding it interesting. In general, I tend to like some of the apocolypse books, but too many of them seem to rely more on blood and gore and not so much on characterization. So far, the characters are holding together for me.

I'm currently reading We Are Legion (We Are Bob) and Jade City for the TBR challenge. I'm sure I'll get hooked into one or the other and finish it first, but right now I'm a few chapters into each and like them both.

Finished Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz and reviewed it - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2534211918.
Here is a belated review of Secret of NIMH as my edition has it - a film tie-in - usually known as Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1367357351 read around 24 August but which I forgot to review.
I'm reading The Lost Queen by Signe Pike which isn't released yet. My copy is a Net Galley. It's supposed to be Mists of Avalon crossed with Outlander. At this point, I assume Outlander is mentioned because it takes place in sixth century Scotland, but there's nothing uniquely Scottish about it. So I'm not sure there's a good reason to compare it to Outlander. It is an Arthurian retelling, so there is a justification for comparing it to The Mists of Avalon.
Pam wrote: "Here is a belated review of Secret of NIMH as my edition has it - a film tie-in - usually known as Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... r..."Movie-lovers: See any Don Bluth animated features you can get your hands on. The Disney people knew his intelligent cartoons were a threat to their own, and muscled him out of first-class distribution. But such movies as THE SECRET OF NIMH, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN (which features the voice of Burt Reynolds as lead dog "Charles Barkin"), TITAN A.E. and AN AMERICAN TAIL are fine entertainments.
I just finished Utopia, I feel so pleased with myself as I kept putting it off, but yeyy done it - that leaves how many? ooops :)
Just finished The Count: The First Novella Introducing His Majesty's New World a free download, a prequel to a new series. Really liked the characters in this and was looking forward to going to the first book in the series. Unfortunately, it jumps ahead 20 years and continues with what is apparently a completely new cast of characters and on top of everything else, is way overpriced at $10 for me to see if I like it as well as I did the novella.
Needed something short to listen to while puttering and found All Systems Red in my library's digital collection. I had been wanting to jump on the Murderbot train so I'm pretty thrilled that I was able to check it out.

...wait.
Nice Tip Allen on the Don Bluth movies, I loved "The Secret of NIMH and Titan A.E. . Didn't realize Disney worked against folk like that but that is the world I guess.
Don wrote: "Nice Tip Allen on the Don Bluth movies, I loved "The Secret of NIMH and Titan A.E. . Didn't realize Disney worked against folk like that but that is the world I guess."Sad but true, Don! But now thanks to discs and streaming we can see these fine Bluth animations for what they are -- excellent, not also-rans. Of course, kids like'em too!
Jacqueline wrote: "Just finished Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. Really loved it."The entire trilogy is so good and I haven't even finished the last book. I hope you enjoy it, as well. :)
I am so far :) Bring on book 2. I was hoping the local bookshop would have the second one but it doesn’t. It does have all of Fitz and the Fool though. I do have it on my iPad but I don’t like reading from my iPad.
Jacqueline wrote: "Just finished Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb. Really loved it."Me too. What an amazing introduction to the world and its characters.

I don't really read from my Ipad unless I am on vacation or on a long commute. Otherwise, me and my dusty books! :)
Alondra wrote: "I hate when that happens. Luckily, there are quite a few UBSs in this area; so if one doesn't have it then the other will."There are on line used book stores, as well. Abe's Books is one and some sellers there offer free shipping. Search used books for others.
https://www.abebooks.com/
Yeahhhh I have a thing about buying online. I used to buy my University textbooks online because I could save up to 75% on what they charge over here for them but normal books I don’t. I’d rather buy them from my irl bookshops. If I really have to have it then I get them to order it in as long as it’s not too expensive. That way my money stays in my town. Or towns in my case because I live between 4 of them. The only thing I’ve bought online was We Are Legion (We Are Bob) because I couldn’t find it anywhere. I got the CD for $10 from Book Depository.
Abe is owned by Amazon. bookdepository.com is also owned by Amazon. Note that when a book is only available used, a x-reference is made from bookdepository to Abe.Most of the used books I look for are not unusual or rare, and I go to thriftbooks.
Yeah Allen here in Australia we have a website, booko.com.au, where you put your book in and it searches every online site in the world and gives you the best new and used prices (in Australian dollars) that it can find. It gives us thrifty and Abe and amazon and Book Depository and soooo many others as well as the bookshops here in Oz. It works like those “compare the hotel room rate” sites like trivago and that. I used to use it all the time when I was doing my degree because it found the books for me.
I didn't know that Amazon owned some of the online used book stores. Notch another for Goodreads, a place to learn. :)

Now, I'm about half way through Sacré Bleu.
