I probably shouldn't have read Marvel 1602 because I'm more of a 1602 fan than a Marvel fan. So I'm sure there were references that I didn't get.

Ugh, I DNF'd that book. Others in my book club really liked it though.

message 1459: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (justiceofkalr) | 403 comments Finished Raven Stratagem and it was so so so good. Now to hope my copy of Revenant Gun has arrived when I get home from work.

Also finished Akata Witch, which I wasn't really a fan of. The world seemed super cool but the events in the book just seemed so random.

Currently listening to Medusa Uploaded and I'm extremely intrigued so far. This seems like the kind of book that I'll love.

Knocked out Laid-Back Camp, Vol. 1 on my lunch break. Cute first volume in a manga about camping. I'm a little ways into volume 2 now.

message 1460: by Lowell (new)

Lowell (schyzm) | 578 comments I finished both Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (kindle) and The Valley of Fear (audible) in the last couple days, so I'm moving on to the next fun stuff!

Started listening to The Singularity Trap by Dennis E. Taylor of Bobiverse fame this morning on my commute (new book, audible exclusive for 4 months). I'm still noodling around my collection on what to read on kindle next, but I did just get an ARC for The Quantum Magician (kindle via Netgalley.com), so I think that's probably what will get the next read.

What a blessing not to be 100% sure what you're reading next! I have, like, 6 books all at varying stages of Howler yelling at me to read them next. Next is Raven Stratagem, then Alif the Unseen, then Revenant Gun then...another buddy read, I forget, but it hasn't, and also Ember in Ashes.

SIIIIIGH.

Well, that's the thing - I do give myself a list of books I want to read in the year, but I don't make it so huge that I can't throw in spur of the moment ideas (like Kitchen Confidential) or feel incredibly bad if I don't stick to it - Plus, who knows when I'm going to get an ARC or some other kind of reading commitment. I also do my best to stick to 1 audible and 1 print at a time. I just can't focus otherwise.

The list isn't' really a rule. It's more of a ... guideline... (arr!).

Then, I read Raptor Red. It was described to me as Jurassic Park from a dinosaur's perspective, but I think it was more like Walking with Dinosaurs in book form. Still very enjoyable.

Adam James I'm currently trying (unsuccessfully) to finish Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, The Postmortal(again) and The Ritual.
If all else fails I'll probably just end up reading The Magicians trilogy again for the 3rd time.
I have the worst time finding books I enjoy.

message 1468: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments I liked Sapiens, I didn't love Sapiens. It had, what I call, Victor Hugo disease. It went off on tangents that only barely had anything to do with the main theme. I prefer my non-fiction pretty focused, this one wasn't.

message 1469: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1231 comments To stay true to the point of the thread....

I just finished Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens which I thought was excellent and am in the middle of
The Prefect which is also very good.

message 1470: by Trike (new)

Trike I just started Warcross by Marie Lu. The first chapter or so is pretty much a big info dump, so I’m ready to move onto the meat of whatever this story is.

message 1471: by mo (new)

mo (fiertia) I just finished The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin (audio book version - Robin Miles is an excellent reader!) and can't wait to start The Stone Sky. I'm late to The Broken Earth trilogy, I know, but I've really been enjoying it.

Always so excited for people just experiencing the magic of Broken Earth! I wish I could read it for the first time again ^^

Adam, not that there's anything wrong with re-reading, but if you're lookin' for new things to like, may I suggest posting in our Recommendations folder? Post books you like and what you liked about them (also things that might seem like obvious recommendations that you DIDN'T like and why, so we can try to find the middle ground) and hopefully the brilliant minds of SFFBC can help you out!

I'm really digging Across the Nightingale Floor while I listen to it. And then I stop and think about what I've just read and the spell wears off. Whatever, it's magic while I'm with it, and sometimes that's enough.

Into the Drowning Deep better do something soon. *pokes it with a stick*

message 1473: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments I haven’t been reading any sci-fi or fantasy lately other than a failed attempt at Leviathan Wakes. It was a library book and I had to take it back. I did pick up my own copy the other day from a cheap bookshop so I do want to finish it. Just not right now.

I did finish listening to Contest by Matthew Reilly the other day. It is about a contest to the death featuring beings from other planets in the New York Public Library. So that’s fantasy. Listening to Cinder by Marissa Meyer whenever I drive anywhere at the moment. I don’t mind it but it does get annoying in places.

I’m currently halfway through Beartown by Fredrik Backman. There is an incident alluded to the whole way through the first half of the book (right from the first page) and I’ve got up to it. I needed a break from it for a couple of days to get my head in the right zone to finish reading it. I’m by myself at the beach and feeling a little “fragile” so I don’t want to make myself worse. My way to handle my sometimes fragile mental health is to recognise my triggers and make sure I’m in a safe environment when I face them. So instead of finishing Beartown right now I read Holes by Louis Sachar for a change of pace. I’d read some of it before but couldn’t remember much about it. Really liked it.

Been reading and listening to a few murder mysteries lately. The Bat by Jo Nesbø , Never Never by James Patterson and Candice Fox, B is for Burglar by Sue Grafton, Skulduggery Pleasant.

I’m still not ready for Beartown. I wonder what else is in my two bags of books I brought with me....Red Sister, Illuminae, Golem and the Djinni, new Nora Roberts Shelter in Place, Ursula Le Guins Changing Planes, Jo Nesbøs Macbeth, Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, I’ll be Gone in the Dark (nope...not by myself), Fahrenheit 451, Six of Crows, Fifth Season or one of the other dozen squashed into the other bag. Only a small sampling and I still have heaps at home. Ohhhh I don’t know. Maybe some breakfast and then I’ll decide.

message 1474: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments Just for the record I’ve picked up Illuminae. If nothing else it will fulfill the prompt in one of my challenges about a book written in a unique format/writing structure. And it will satisfy my need for a little sci-fi in my day.

Tad chilly here today. It’s only 12C in the house and I don’t have a heater. It’s overcast so I don’t have any sun coming through the windows to warm the house up like normal. Just as well I have blankets and tea and books 😀

I am rarely 100%.
I create lists in late December-early January, make commitments to book clubs and challenges and then by January 10th I have already discovered there are so many other books I really 'need' to read!

Same!! Organization fails me when I just want to read all of the things.

@Catalina, welcome!! Left Hand of Darkness and TLTL are on our bookshelves, you have great taste! ;-) I also really, really enjoyed TLTL --we're getting ready to read the 3rd and 4th in the series as a Buddy Read if you're interested!

Oo, MadProf, I didn't have that one on my list, but if that's how you're describing it...

message 1480: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments Recently, I've read Binti, Home and The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor for my RL book club. Next up for the group is Cannery Row by John Steinbeck, so we don't only read sf/ f.

I've also recently read In Love and Warcraft by Madhuri Shekar, which was fun, Heart Berries: A Memoir by Terese Marie Mailhot, which I'm glad I read, but it wasn't fun. A bunch of books by Jewell Parker Rhodes including Sugar, Ninth Ward, Ghost Boys, which is so far my favorite. An unusual one that I liked a lot, maybe loved, is he by John Connolly, about Stan Laurel, Babe Hardy, Hal Roach and movie making in the 1920's '30's, and '40's.

Adam James What's holding you back? I am considering putting it on my list, so I'd like to hear if it has problems.

@Jamesboggie. I think Hank put it best. The author gets off topic and it is heavy in personal opinion starting in the 2nd section. This may be fine for some, but it was such a shift in tone that it put me off.

Paul Sánchez Keighley (paulsanchez91) I was recently underwhelmed by a modern sequel to Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions by Ian Stewart. Flatland, in case you don't know it, is an absolutely wonderful 19th-century book that takes place in a 2D world whose inhabitants are squares, triangles, lines and so on. It would be a good book to read in this group, incidentally.

In any case, here are my thoughts/complaints on its soft reboot: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2719 comments Currently reading Paper and Fire. Right now I'm in the early stages of trying to remember what happened in the first book, and getting the little clues that job my memory.

Also, finally finished The Black Prism, which I pushed through despite the issues of sexism I'd mentioned early in the book. Can't say they ever went away, and as I didn't care about any of the characters, by the end, I definitely will not be continuing with the series.
