M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hoorah! I have a new book out! OK it's just a 10k short in an anthology but it's out and it's one of the best bits I've written for a long time.

I used to love the book exchange stall on the market. You could take them back and get half price back on the next book. Nobody can afford to do that now.

Jim | 21812 comments we have a shop like that left in Barrow but I'm not sure whether she'll keep going

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We lost our bookshop about 10 years ago :(

Dark out still but I need to venture forth for some grocery supplies. Elder daughter left yesterday back down south to London so the vegetarian option is no longer being catered. Perhaps I'll get some steaks :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Oh hang on butcher no longer opens on Sundays. Damn it.
Never know what day of the week it is at this time of year!

G J (Gaff to my friends) Reilly | 1836 comments Mawnin’. Cleared up nicely after yesterday’s damp and foggy start. I’m lookig forward to sitting today. And maybe reading. Then I might actually move to do something else, perhaps even some writing later.

The closest bookshop we have left is in Swansea, where the parking is almost as expensive as the books are if you go any day but Sunday. It’s tragic really, I love a wander around a good book shop.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments We have two Waterstones here but that's about it.

Just off for a night with my parents. Hope it will be fun although it entirely depends on my father's mood. Rock on tomorrow evening when all visiting duties are done and we can relax for a couple of days with nothing hanging over us.

Happy Sunday everyone.

Cheers

MTM

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I've cleared away all the Christmas tree and decorations :) Love having everything back to normal(ish). Only Hogmanay to get through now and you have whisky for that

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments How do? Just catching up on reviews. That's the problem (no problem!) with a holiday. More time to read but you feel antisocial for spodding on the laptop.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dave has gone up to b'wade again.

I should start on sorting out the suitcases.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Well, had a productive day yesterday, got the freezer done, went to the charity shop with more bags and didn't come home with more books. Also got through 4 episodes of Killing Eve. Went to B & M around teatime and got a couple more bits for the charity, then had a text from a friend asking if I wanted to go round, so I said yes. Did lose a filling though, which fortunately doesn't hurt so should be fine till the dentists open again. Then agreed to go with her to the airport this morning to take her brother back, which I regretted at 6.45 when I was still awake at 4.45! Luckily I came home and went back to bed. Got some usual Sunday housework to do, then setting up my book challenges before having a bath. Do feel like I have a proper cold today.

Wow, can't believe you have cleared everything away R, isn't it bad luck? Do hope your dad is having a good day MT and glad you have a couple of days where you can relax.

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, everyone. We're all geared up for a quiet new year - the holiday period has been busy enough already, I think.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Well, went to bed ridiculously early, set the alarm for 8 to see if the dentist were open, and actually pressed snooze cos I couldn't face getting up! Got through, made the mistake of saying it didn't hurt, so was given an appointment next Mon but put on the cancellation book. They rang back 5 mins later saying they had just had a cancellation at 9.15, so have got that appointment. Todays task is tidying the bedroom, won't do a proper job with the wardrobe though, still feel full of a cold and lack energy but will at least put all the gift bags away, they obviously bred over Christmas. Neighbour also wanted to go out for a meal this afternoon, and then will just go to hers with some gin tonight.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all! I've been out to collect a letter from the Post Office due to insufficient postage - turns out it had a counterfeit stamp on it! Can't trust anything these days.

It's bad luck to leave your decorations up too long - past Twelfth Night - but I think it's fine to take them down before :)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I didn't decorate at all. Couldn't see the point.

I had the kids decorate my classroom though. They'll have to take them down next week.
Think I'll get them started on Chinese New Year decorations straight away.

I'm really missing the sunshine.

Jim | 21812 comments Yes, we've still got mince pies to eat yet, and haven't even started the Christmas cake :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments I also have mince pies and christmas cake, nearly finished the stollen though

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ive packed the minced pies, stollen and Christmas cake.

We'll put on a Christmas dinner for our mates who stayed in country for the holiday.

I haven't got around to last year's Christmas cake yet. Though the mince pies have mysteriously vanished. should I call for Poirot?

message 9181: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It was a tradition when I were a lass that my aunt and uncle and their four girls, all older than us, came for Boxing Day. We kids would put on a play, always entitled The Case of the Poisonous Mince Pies. It mainly consisted of us stuffing the remaining mince pies until we couldn't manage any more, whereupon one of us would 'die'. I never remember there being much more to it than that. Nobody even bothered to try working out whodunnit.

set in the finest traditions of improvised theatre! :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Had a very productive day, dentist trip was fairly painless - the sore tooth I've had since before Christmas also got looked at, gum is inflamed, but x-ray didn't show any pockets of infection, so have to gargle with saltwater and if it gets worse, she'll give me antibiotics. Better still, because I only went on 6th, I didn't get charged! Then ratty neighbour came to give me a thank you present for looking after the rats (unexpected, the Christmas presents were generous), and told me the docs were open, so I rang to see if I could get a nurse appointment this week, they had one at lunch! So just a quick tidy of the bedroom, before going out for a meal, which wasn't that great, we won't go there again. Then decided we needed some fresh veg for tea tomorrow, so called in Aldi on the way home. Now just finishing my last book of the year and spending some time with the cats before going to my neighbours, not sure I can stay up to see the new year in.

Sounds a great game Kath. How nice to take home food to make a Christmas dinner when you get home Patti.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Happy new year all. I’m still wittering on about my strawberry gin. It’s fine with lemonade, lots of lemonade!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12606 comments Yes, I prefer my gin with lemonade too. Am drinking Violet gin and rose lemonade

Is it like a cow giving birth?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Happy New Year all! We seem to have made it. Like Jim, I don't bother staying up for the bells but I did hear some fireworks around 12, despite my best intentions.

Don't know but the amount of fuss people make over it, it must be something traumatic :-)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning each! Well, it doesn't look much different.
Have a good one.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Good morning, it’s an eat drink and be merry day today. For tomorrow we shall diet.
We’re going next door for drinks and nibbles at lunchtime. Years ago we always went outside as all the ships sounded their hooters and sirens at midnight but they don’t do that anymore. It wasn’t a quiet night though as fireworks were going off from about 6 o’clock in the evening. What that’s about is a mystery, I’m just so glad my dogs aren’t bothered but I know it’s a big problem for some.
