Phase 1: Assembly

Step 1- Gather up all the books you have already started or that you are ‘currently reading’ for this year.

Step 2- Gather up all the books you have borrowed from the library or from friends/family that you are supposed to be reading soon.

My home library is probably about 50% borrowed right now. It's a bit like having a wardrobe that is 50% not my style. The borrowed books have extra pressure attached to reading them, since they need to be returned eventually, but meanwhile the books I chose and acquired myself languish on the shelves. For this readathon, pre- and actual, I may try to focus on borrowed books, so I can finish and return a bunch this year. I love that my siblings and I pass books back and forth so much, and they are mostly great books I do want to read, but it would be great to look at my shelves and not feel guilty for not having already finished all those borrowed books.

Step 3- List all the reading challenges and book clubs/groups you are involved with this year.

SciFi and Fantasy Book Club (Goodreads)
Crime, Mysteries & Thrillers (Goodreads)
75 Books...More or Less! (Goodreads)
Ultimate Popsugar Reading Challenge (Goodreads)
Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die/ Reading 1001 (Goodreads)
Guardian Newspaper 1000 Novels (Goodreads)
Mount TBR 2022 (Goodreads)
Virtual Mount TBR 2022 (Goodreads)
List Challenges lists

I've focused a lot more on the 1001 list and 1000 Novels list books over the past few years, but this year the new points system just isn't working for me yet, and I've been less inclined to keep up with the Reading 1001 group's system. I ought to cath up on that log at least, since I've been reading books from that list, just not reviewing them on there or claiming points. I hadn't actually joined the new groups yet for the year, but the Mount TBR groups are along the lines of what I would like to accomplish with my reading this year, finishing more of the books I already own and those already on my radar, rather than just adding lots more books to my TBR indefinitely.

Step 4- Decide how many books to include in your pre-readathon and readathon day TBRs.

If I finish 6 books a week on average when not trying, I figure 8 books per week is a good goal to keep it challenging. No Dickens or Trollope this season, just normal-sized books for a while. We have roughly 10/11 weeks left til the readathon, but 80 books is way too big a stack to assemble all at once. I narrowed down my possible TBR books to 37, and I have a few audiobooks online I did not count, so my TBR will be about 40 books to start out. I'll adjust at the end of each month, I guess.

Step 5- Make your TBR. Post a photo of your TBR on social media so we can all admire your selections and be inspired to add new titles to our own stacks.

Fall Pre-Readathon Reading Challenge

A non-fiction book.
A book with more than one poem in it.
A play written by a woman.
5 books with autumn colored spines or covers.
A short story collection by an author who did not publish a full-length novel.
A book by Stephen King, John Grisham, Clive Cussler, Louis L’Amour, James Michener, Michael Crochton, or Robert Ludlum.
A book by Anita Shreve, Jane Smiley, Barbara Kingsolver, Jan Karon, Pearl S. Buck, Jane Austen, or Edith Wharton.
A book set on each continent (7 total- North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, Antarctica/Oceania)
A book about the future, published before 1960.
A book from a series of more than 3 books.
This list would have us reading 20 books to finish all the prompts, though if you wish you can of course combine some of them to read fewer books. If you run out of books to read before the readathon and need a few more prompts…

A. A book that was mentioned by, or being read by a character from one of the books you read for the first 10 prompts.

B. A non-fiction book about a place or subject that featured in one of the books you read for the first 10 prompts.

C. 5 books by one of these authors- Georgette Heyer, Arthur B. Upfield, Ngaio Marsh, Rex Stout, Agatha Christie, Dick Francis, Sue Grafton, Alexander McCall Smith, Susan Wittig Albert, Boris Akunin

D. 3-5 books by one of these authors- Andre Norton, Julian May, Joan D. Vinge, Michael Moorcock, Ben Bova, J.D. Robb, Larry Niven, Robin Hobb, Jack McDevitt, Mercedes Lackey, Kim Stanley Robinson, Octavia Butler

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 566 comments I've never really cared for the 1001 point system, but this year I'm not really feeling the monthly books either. I've only kept up with the TBR Takedown. I love that one.

I also love the challenge prompts here, and the idea of clearing away borrowed books and books (or series!) that I've started. Just not sure how well they'll fit with the challenges I have committed to. And I'm a bit scared to actually see the resulting stack if I pile everything up. lol

Jaime, you have a varied list that will keep you interested and reading. Ahh another follower of Shakespeare! You are may be soon reading Hamlet, Revenge!, and I !ay soon be reading Hag-Seed. I am feeling a longing to read Atwood and to prep for another reading of The Tempest with another group. I have read only a very few pages and already I am charmed. . . . Hope you will enjoy the mystery.

Hagseed is an interesting novel. It definitely makes more sense if you are familiar with the Tempest, so it's good that you're rereading that play. :)

October Week 2 TBR Stacks
I'm leaning towards doing a theme for the readathon in a few weeks, either focusing on my sister's books or maybe on murder mysteries. In the meantime I have a few more of the pre-readathon challenge prompts left to finish. I added a couple new books to the mix, and this time organized them in groups of 5, still reading relay style, so the top book, in bold, is the active book for its group.

Long Lap 2
I have a few books from week 1 that have to carry over (library books, due soon). Otherwise I'm shifting gears to a different 'fantasy self', the one doing restoration ecology in Wales, an alternate version of myself I really wish I could figure out how to make work in real life. Every few years I go back to pondering whether this alternate life-path is less impossible than it was previously. My TBR for this week is
TBR -carryovers

Yeah, my actual readathon TBR may be a bit more realistic. I usually finish 4-6 books during a 24hr readathon, so there's not point in having a TBR of dozens of books for one day of reading. I do love options though. :)

Lately I'm far more ambitious than fast, unfortunately.
