What are you reading in July 2014?
Hmmmm...alrighty then...In other news, I started Hollow World last night. Only a couple of chapters in, but great stuff.
I started Hunt the Wolf this morning - my portable/ereader book. Decent first couple of chapters.
Both of these are cleaning up my freebies pile, so after that I'll be free to read other stuff without review commitments hanging over my head. (Though I also bought Hollow World, and don't consider it an obligation).
This is a good thing, since I voted for all 4 of our group reads. Looking forward to trying them.
Just finished Prince of Fools. Enjoyed it, very entertaining. Now on to Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan which is being released today. Cant wait!!! Might also get started on The Shadow Throne by Django Wexler which is also being released today. Its going to be a good week :)Keen to try Hollow World too.

I am finishing the Riyria, about half way through Percepliqus, thinking of staying with Sullivan, just picked up Hollow World. Hoping you enjoy it.

I had to give up on Desert Spear... anger management issues... I finished The Dark Crystal last night and I haven't really started anything else yet. I tried to start Rogues but the first story isn't grabbing me. Shrug.

I'm still trying to figure out how I've never seen the movie. I love Jim Henson. I grew up watching Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock. One of my favorite movies was Labyrinth. But no Dark Crystal. Maybe my mom thought it was too dark?? Maybe the movie scared me? No clue. I'm going to see if my library had the movie next time I'm there.
Because of the workout challenge thing I was doing, my morning ellipticalling was compromised and then skipped entirely - so I've had The Map of the Sky sitting on my 'currently-reading' shelf *forever*... so I picked that up this morning. Unfortunately, I'm kinda bored with the story and am at the point where I just want to finish it for completion sake more than any real desire to find out what happens - which was highlighted by the fact that I even forgot I was reading it, except I kept seeing it on my 'reading' widget thingie...
lol My favorite movie as a kid for a long time.
I never saw 'The Last Unicorn' as a kid. Seeing it for the first time as an adult didn't exactly do it for me.

Speaking of, it's kinda funny 'cause I remember seeing Labyrinth and Dark Crystal and whatnot as a kid and loving them.
Then I rewatched them in my late-teens/early-twenties, and remember thinking they didn't age well...
Then I watched them again when I was older, and loved them again.
Glad I outgrew that too cool for school phase.
I never saw The Dark Crystal OR The Last Unicorn. O_o

As a side note, I recently told Jer that I think my first introduction to the concept of male anatomy was via Labyrinth... ;)

I´m pretty sure The Dark Crystal was the first movie I ever saw. One of my earliest memories is me and my sister sitting on the floor watching it on an old TV.
So what is everyone reading?

Sorry... I mean I'm only 10% in, so maybe it's going to get better... but it just seems like a weak beginning. Not BAD, necessarily, but just not what I'm used to from King.
Understandable. And we might not agree in the end. I just think I should start (should have started already) before I see too many negative reviews. I've already seen some.Don't want another Earth Abides/Last Policeman situation, where I avoid the books that people say suck.
To be fair, I probably wouldn't have gotten around to them anyway, thanks to the Waymblings of Kings....
I'm re-reading Dresden! I wanted something light and easy for plane and honeymoon reading, so I figured it would be as good a time as any.. Started Fool Moon today. My fiance is mad because he started Dresden a year ago and I'l likely going to pass him soon :P
Still semi reading Requiem because of Becks. Even though she finished way before me and left me feeling inferior in every way...Though I might take a side trip for Tower Lord.
The tables have turned... for once. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!What do you think about it? I don't know if I'd ask if you like it, because it's... not really likable. But are you interested?
If you hate it, you don't have to finish. I was just interested in getting your opinion of it because you haven't seen the movie.
I honestly dig what I've read of it so far. The style just drags me down though and makes it a bit of work to get through. But so far, so good. And if the fact that I find myself slipping into some sort of new York Jewish accent in my head now and then means anything, then its that I'm invested enough to finish.
I´m interested in reading Requiem... that movie did more to keep me away from drugs in my teens than any amount of education and/or propaganda ever could.
Paolo, I really loved it. The style takes some adjustment, and a lot of people hate it, but I thought it was great. Ala - I hope you finish it because I'm really interested to see what you think!
I loved it too! It's very visceral and shocking but it's one of my favorite movies.
I'll finish it eventually. But now that I don't feel I have to race through it to catch up, it'll probably be a bit before I do. Might watch the movie afterwards, too.
Yay! Just starting Tower Lord!
Currently reading Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. It started of a bit slow, but really builds and I like it more and more with every chapter. This is the first book I've read by PFH. I'm about halfway through but already curious about Judas Unchained. I just have so many books I need to read after this it's tough to have to pick only one.

I'm close to finishing up my reread of The Sorceress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #3). Last time I posted in this group, I was reading The War of the Flowers, but I put it back on my TBR pile about halfway through. It's an interesting book once you get 200 or so pages in (!); but it's really heavy on unneccessary descriptions, and reading half of it is like the average novel length (400 pages), so I'll continue with it some other time.
I've been on a YA kick lately. I recently finished The Prince of Mist and A Wrinkle in Time. Now, I'm reading The Interrupted Tale.I think I might go back to HF Fantasy once I'm done. Fall of Kings is starting to call my name.
What did you think of A Wrinkle In Time? I own that one so I'm wondering if I should move it up the list.
It was good, but I expected to like it a lot more since it was one of my favorites as a kid. Some of the scenes stuck with me so it was cool seeing how much I actually remembered. The religious aspect surprised me because I didn't remember that being part of the story. I liked Meg as a heroine, but after awhile her hysterics started to grind on my nerves. It's worth a read, but I wouldn't say move it up. Per the women in my library book club this one is actually the weakest in the series. I can't comment bc I only recently found out it was part of a series and so haven't read the rest of them. Definitely plan on continuing though.
A Wrinkle in Time was my first science fiction/fantasy book. I read it in school. And I hated it. Absolutely loathed it. Read it again years (and years) later. Still hated it.It's funny that I fell in love with science fiction/fantasy when my first was such a failure. (For me).

I read it in school too, but I can't remember if it was my first sci-fi/fantasy books. I just remember reading it twice for school and liking it. But, it's funny because I can't remember what I liked about it. I only remember the kids going off to rescue dad and some scenes that stuck out.
OK, I read the prologue to Mr. Mercedes. I was getting nervous about it. I feel better now. King still has his magic.
Nostalgia nostalgia... Wrinkle in Time, Neverending Story... Alanna anyone? ;)I'm not sure a Wrinkle in Time would survive my re-read either, but really liked the story as a kid.
Re Wrinkle in Time -I read it when I was young. Too young. It had to have been one of the first full books I had read. If not the first. I remember I struggled with it a lot. The language and the subject went way over me. And I hated the smoke monster thing. (Fan of Lost). I don't think it was literal enough for me. Which is funny - I only like books that are, of have some element, fantasy in them today.
I decided to reread it some years back because I figured my opinion might have changed. It didn't. I understood the story much better this time. But I still felt the author talks above children. Just my opinion.
Isn't she the one who says that if a book is too difficult for adults, then write it for kids? I haven't read the book(s), but I feel like maybe she's not talking above them, but giving kids more credit for being able to understand things than people generally do.
Of course, I've come to realize recently that my childhood was... abnormal. I didn't watch any of the stuff that most children of the 80s did, I didn't read a lot of children's books... I read some, like Beverly Cleary and Little House and whatnot, but my mom let me read whatever I wanted, so I did - and so I missed a lot of the 'age appropriate' stuff that kids my age were reading.
In a way, I'm kind of sorry about that, because it means that I missed out on that first experience of reading kids' books as a kid - but otherwise, I'm not sorry at all, because my mom let me try new things.
Anyway, I think I will pick up A Wrinkle In Time soonish... maybe after Blindsight.

"This was my impression of her writing as well. Rather than talking down she actually tries to explain the physics and the complexities of her world. I actually liked that about her writing because as you revisit you get a better understanding each time. At least that is how it worked for me. I know I didn't catch it all as a kid.

ANYway... I've just started Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King. So far... Meh. I'm disappointed that the opening chapter feels so... lame. But - maybe the rest of the book will be great. Fingers crossed.
