It already has been. There are 11 of them already.

That's all there's going to be, right? I think the series has been cancelled - or they decided to stop where they were. Whichever.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments My online games class will be visiting "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came!"

So excited!

message 254: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I read the first book and stopped, but if so many of you enjoy the series, perhaps I'll give it another try.

Too bad about the comic. However, if it wasn't up to par, it has to go.

message 255: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Colleen, I don't know. I've heard rumors that they were going to continue it with The Drawing of the Three, which I would love, but I don't know details.

Laurel - the GNs are fantastic.

message 256: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Actually - I was right. They are continuing with Drawing of the Three. :D

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Oh cool. Don't know why I heard they'd ended the series.

message 258: by Leland (new)

Leland (lelandhw) | 63 comments Maybe you were thinking of the Talisman graphic. That one seems to have been cancelled part way through the story. If I remember correctly, it leaves you hanging right as Jack meets Wolf.

message 259: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kobus (rainbowsunset) | 123 comments I'm reading A Coven of Witches by Joseph Delaney. I've finished the main series of The Last Apprentice recently, now I'm going through the companion books.

message 260: by Leland (new)

Leland (lelandhw) | 63 comments Oh, not fantasy books, but did I mention that I'm reading Abaddon's Gate, and Mr. Mercedes currently. The latter finally picking up in the final 40%. If I weren't a constant reader, I might have chucked this one.

Paolo (ppiazzesi) | 166 comments Becky wrote: "I'm still working on Blindsight and... it's not going well. It's been days and days and I'm only up to 15% and ready to call it quits. Whenever I pick it up, I read a section, have no idea what it ..."

If you're not enjoying a book it's always OK to drop it. Having said that, I thought Blindsight was incredible and one of the best books I have ever read. I struggled a lot with the first 100 pages or so but I kept going because I had wanted to read it for a long time and it was recommended a lot to me, and I'm very glad I finished it. Although I'm not sure if you should push on if it's such a chore. As much as I loved it, I've only recommended this book to two people I know, but I know they will both have their minds blown. It's definitely not for everyone... very very weird and very technical. It helps a little if you're used to reading stuff like Scientific American.

Yes, there is a story, a pretty good one, but it's still secondary to the ideas about consciousness and the evolution of intelligence. And yes, there are characters, but at first I struggled to understand what was going on with them. Watts just drops you into their midst with little explanation at first. They have all been seriously modified as human beings, for example the biologist has technological implants in his body (and also remotely in the lab) through which he can directly sense the inputs he is measuring. Siri, our protagonist, had literally half his brain removed and replaced with an implant, which left him with an abnormally high reasoning capacity and also unable to feel empathy. Susan James... what a mindfuck of a character, I'll let you figure this one out on your own.

I haven't posted final thoughts in the other thread in part because I want to see if a couple more people finish it, and in part because I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.

message 262: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) We actually subscribe to SA. :)

But, in books that I read for enjoyment, I expect a little more. I need characters that I understand (at least) and a compelling story.

I don't mind technical (though I may not understand it all), but I dislike books that are overly confusing just because and just expect people to roll with it and figure it out. I gave up on Malazan because I don't have the patience for that, and especially not in a series.

But this is a standalone, and it does seem to have gotten to a point where things are starting to come together, so I think I'm going to stick with it.

message 263: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'll pop over to the thread to discuss further, though. :)

message 273: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 63 comments I'm currently listening to The Robots of Dawn on audio. I really love Isaac Asimov, he's one of my favorite authors.

Earlier today I finished Cibola Burn and I already want more! Does anyone know if another book is planned? I hope so!

I'm 99% sure that I'll be starting The Name of the Wind next. I read the first chapter a while ago but then my hold on Cibola Burns came up. I've heard awesome things about The Name of the Wind & it was a present from a friend, so I'm excited!

Have you heard about how SyFy is working on a tv series for it too?

The Phantom Tollbooth was one of my favorite books as a kid. If you get a chance you should pick up The BFG that's another book you can snarf up real quick too...if you want a challenge try to read it out loud. *winks*

I myself just started Abaddon's Gate a couple of days ago. I'm about 80 pages in. I'm hoping to burn through it in a week or two and jump right into Cibola Burn. Love the series. Hope the TV show Syfy commissioned does it justice, though I am hopeful since Thomas Jane is attached.

message 282: by Cora (last edited Jul 24, 2014 10:54AM) (new)

Cora Foerstner (corafoerstner) I just finished Graceling, working on a review. Started Phoenix Rising A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel, only a little ways into it, but so far it's a fun Steampunk read. I'm a little worried the protagonist will turn out to be a stereotype, but I hope not.

message 283: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I need to read Abaddon's Gate soon. That last line of Caliban's War was like... WHAAAAAAAAAT?! O_O

message 284: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Bad Girls Deadlift (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I've been feeling all sorts of reading funky lately...

...but as per usual my book buying hasn't slowed...

Today I received my copy of Quag Keep...and I think I'm getting excited! Quag Keep (written by Andre Norton) is the first book ever written set in the land created for Dungeons & Dragons.

I've never actually played D&D (you need people to play with) but I've already read some people take issue to this book due to its time period: apparently this was written based on the 1st Gen D&D but the Advanced D&D had more options?

I also read that if I had no experience with D&D that I shouldnt read it. well bugger that cause I'm excited! Now lets see if it can get through my "everything is all meh" filter.

Leland (lelandhw) | 63 comments Becky wrote: "I need to read Abaddon's Gate soon. That last line of Caliban's War was like... WHAAAAAAAAAT?! O_O"

I KNOW! I jumped in the car to go buy it after reading that line.

message 286: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) EXACTLY. I remember where I was (out to dinner with the boyfriend... what? like I'm the only one who brings a book. Pfft.) and what I was doing when I read that line (eating a bleu cheese stuffed olive appetizer - delish!) and I almost choked on the damn thing because when I read that I literally gasped. And then I looked at my boyfriend like O_O and re-read it. And then O_O.

Totally need to get to AG soon.

SO MUCH happened in book 1 that wasn't resolved...but book 2 is a whole new set of shit. I get overwhelmed every time I crack it open.

Your comment made me smile. Even when I get in a reading funk, I buy books. I have more books than I'll ever be able to read. Nice to know I'm not the only one who does this. Kindle makes it so easy. "I always wanted to read that book and it's only $1.99."
