What are you reading in July 2014?
I've started To Kill a Mockingbird. A book I somehow avoided up to now. Not on purpose. I wanted to read it, just... you know.*I don't even know what it's about... I'm assuming *not* killing mockingbirds...
I also somehow avoided TKAM until about two years ago and started reading it with zero idea of what it was about, and I loved it. I finished The Wind Through the Keyhole, which was awesome. Going back to Mid World was a very good time.
TKAM is awesome! I started on The Princess Bride this weekend for bookclub. On advice of people who read the book I read the intros, found them interesting but a bit long. I'm enjoying the story though.
Also, still reading Fall of Kings, which I'm highly enjoying but I'm still finding it hard to focus when reading on my nook. Progress is slow as I've limited my nook reading to lunch time.
I'm still working on Blindsight and... it's not going well. It's been days and days and I'm only up to 15% and ready to call it quits. Whenever I pick it up, I read a section, have no idea what it means, or how it fits into the other disparate sections that I've read, and I put it back down again just as confused, or more so, than I was when I picked it up. I'm really getting impatient for the story to START or that there was some thread that would start tying all of these things together. Someone tell me that this actually DOES happen in the book... there is an actual story here, right? O_o

Sounds like you're gonna call it soon.
Just started The Goblin Emperor this morning. Not far enough in to have an opinion yet - except Maia is a girl's name. :P

The Goblin Emperor also refers to some of the male lords as Marquess. I think the author is purposefully trying to make you feel a bit disjointed to realize its a different culture.
Laurel wrote: "The Goblin Emperor also refers to some of the male lords as Marquess. I think the author is purposefully trying to make you feel a bit disjointed to realize its a different culture."I think Marquess is correct for a male - at least in England. But don't quote me on that yet, going to check.
ETA: I was correct:
A marquess or marquis (UK /ˈmɑrkwɨs/; French: "marquis", /mɑrˈkiː/) is a nobleman of hereditary rank in various European peerages and in those of some of their former colonies. The term is also used to translate equivalent Asian styles, as in imperial China, Japan, and Vietnam (Annam). In the United Kingdom the title ranks below a duke and above an earl (see "Marquesses in the United Kingdom").
snip
The word "marquess" is unusual in English, ending in "-ess" but referring to a male and not a female. In continental Europe it is usually equivalent where a cognate title exists.[clarification needed] A woman with the rank of a marquess, or the wife of a marquess, is a marchioness /ˌmɑrʃəˈnɛs/ in the United Kingdom, or a marquise /mɑrˈkiːz/ elsewhere in Europe. The dignity, rank or position of the title is referred to as a marquisate or marquessate.
Laurel wrote: "The Goblin Emperor also refers to some of the male lords as Marquess. I think the author is purposefully trying to make you feel a bit disjointed to realize its a different culture."Marquess is a male title in Britain. The female version is Marchioness.
(The French equilvalent is marquis and marquise.)

Once all the wedding stuff and moving is over and everything settles back down I really want to try to do a Dark Tower re-read. My bones need some mid world.
And Harry Potter. It's been a while since I did a re-read on that one. Maybe I've forgotten things! *crosses fingers*
I totally need to do re-reads of those two as well... I really need to read a good King book soon if only to get the taste of Mr. Mercedes out of my mind. :X
I want to read the British versions of the HP's. I only have the American versions. I want to read it as it was meant to be read.I really wish publishing companies would give Americans a little bit more credit.

I hate that shit too. So I bought the UK versions from Amazon.co.uk. The set was like $80.
I could maybe do a DT reread next year, but not sure about this year.I haven't decided, yet, whether I'll do my December HP read.
I went to a panel at FantasyCon a few weeks ago that was all about the Dark Tower. They mentioned that it's best to read the original Gunslinger first, go through the series and then finish with the updated Gunslinger. What do you guys think? (view spoiler)I'm pretty sure I have the updated one. I'll need to see if I can get a copy of the original.

Nope. It was easy as pie and it came pretty quick too, for being international.

You know what I hate now, though? They have "adult" and "children's" HP versions. It's so stupid. Same freaking story. Stop being ashamed of reading "children's books", adults!

Fair warning, I got the adult UK editions ('cause I liked the covers better), but they didn't have the picture versions of the letters... and I felt that that was really lacking.
Other than that, and a few word differences (the major one being Philosopher's Stone, but torch for flashlight, and that sort of thing) - I didn't really notice that many differences between the two versions.
I have to get around to reading the Dark Tower series some day. Isn't it also bring adapted into a graphic novel series?Must go look...

All I know is that there are continuity issues if you read the original because of things that were later changed or expanded before King rewrote Gunslinger.
