I finished 'Spellcast' late last night/early this morning. AFter not getting into it initially, at some point it clicked and I sort of got sucked into the story. Probably partially 'cause I have a thing for Faerie, and partially 'cause I kind of related to Maggie.I liked how they handled the theater stuff, and how it's unrealism (i.e. putting on three shows in three months with the same cast!) was sort of explained.
Wasn't entirely happy with the bittersweet ending, though, and my brain did that annoying subconscious attempt at rewriting the ending the entire freaking night.
Stupid brain.
So- my bad luck picking books continues. I checked out Hyde at the library yesterday. And then checked out after two chapters. To be fair, it isn't a classic story I'm very familiar with. But- the book did have the original The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and I read that instead. And I actually enjoyed it. I'm thinking I should read more classics I never got to.
Dangerous Women picked up. Well, it took my skipping to the GRRM story. But wow - I loved it!Should be done with Mr. Mercedes today.
And then I'll take Hollow World off pause and work on it.

I'm tempted to do the same thing with Rogues. Read the Rothfuss and Martin stories and call it quits.
I really liked Gaiman's story in Rogues, but I think it helps if you've already read Neverwhere... (which is one reason I don't generally like these sort of collections. It's great if you're familiar with stuff, but not always a great introduction if you're not.)
I read the Rothfuss story, which was worth the price of admittance, and called it quits. Maybe I'll go back to it later. Maybe. I'm reading Child of a Hidden Sea. I picked it up at the bookstore this weekend. I had low expectations but I'm enjoying it. Kind of reminds me of Hobb's Liveship series... Without the liveships... I did say kind of. Anyway, it's fun.
Is the Rothfuss story a Name of the Wind story?

I've got Rogues on order at the library. But so many series I haven't read yet. I feel like a fantasy neophyte! Is the Nix story a tie-in to anything?

I started reading the Nix story this morning, and not being familiar with the characters isn't really hindering my understanding or anything.
I was hoping it was going to be an Old Kingdom story, but no such luck.

On one hand, I found Name of the Wind is insanely over-rated. On the other hand, Bast was one of the few interesting characters from it...

Finished both books I was hoping to start last week: Annihilation and Shadows in the Asylum. Enjoyed both. Now I'm waiting for the second book of the Southern Reach series to arrive from Amazon later this week.

If you enjoyed the between chapters at the inn more than the rest of the book, I'd recommend reading it. It's not like it's the best short I've read or anything. But it did have the feeling of a "missing chapter". And Kvothe is hardly in it... If that helps any.

Didn't read at all over the weekend but I am now up to book three of Malazan.The number of characters is too damned high.

This is probably the only series which introduces characters with a lot of screen time in ALL books, including the last one. This started bothering me in book 7 which spend first half on new character introduction.
You can easily imagine there is no way all of the plotlines could be closed in the end; it would take another 10 huge volumes.

I sincerely enjoyed The Goblin Emperor
. I read it in a sitting or two. I must be honest, the names were almost a barrier as they were so unfamiliar. However, once you get past that, it is such a lovely slow burn character study of court intrigue. It was so enjoyable.I picked up Half a King
this morning and read through half in a sitting. I wouldn't have put it down, but I had to go and visit family. I was immediately pulled in by Abercrombie's superior character development and excellent plot twists. I'm salivating to find out who Nothing is from his previous books. I have several theories ;). If you're thinking of trying this one, I'm certain it will be a four if not five star read!
I've started The Goblin Emperor. Again. This time it's going better. First go around I got confused. Fast. But I do enjoy historical books - and books that seem as though they *could* be historical. Does Half a King tie into his other books? Should someone who hasn't read them, read those first?
No, you don't need to have read his other books. I think this particular character is simply a wink and a nod to die hard fans. We can all have a great 'ole time trying to guess if this mysterious character (named Nothing) is someone from a previous book. It would make a fun discussion thread, but a new reader will enjoy the story every bit as an old.I hope I explained that clearly!
So I've had a pretty good streak of book fussies lately...But I read a great review for this book Bone Rider and decided to get it. It's a m/m romance - not normally my thing but the review was very convincing - and I started it the other day.
WOW. This book is crazy. It's amazing. It's got so much action and explosions in it that I could see it as a movie. It's an m/m romance sci-fi action shoot-em-up flick. O_O And one of the most gripping books I've read all year, this author wields tension so skillfully that she should teach classes. I barely can out it down. Being at work today is killing me. I don't know how they are going to get out of this mess. O_O

sweeeet! I had thought the writing for that world was over and done with!
Hmmm, I finished a Mercedes Thompson streak with River Marked. These books have gotten better along the way. This one I particular liked because of all the intriguing local history (factual) interlaced with the story. It was nicely done and made me want to visit the area of N/NE Oregon along the Columbia River.Then, just this morning finished Fated, (Alex Verus Series) which was a pleasant surprise to a new UF series (THANK YOU NON-ROMANCE UF SERIES BOOK LIST!) and an enjoyable listen. I'll definitely be picking up the next, just not sure what to listen to from here...

'Screaming Staircase' looks good.
I'm almost done with Black Feathers which I have very much enjoyed. I'm audioing Ready Player One which I'm struggling with. I always have an issue with first person narratives so I don't know why I keep reading them. And the 80's pop cultures references are out of control. I knew that was the point but beat a dead horse much? Unfortunately, it was my pick for a RL book club so hopefully everybody else likes it. :) I don't hate it, I just thought it would be better.
