The Chosen (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #15) by J.R. Ward
4.5 stars

I was super excited to finally get this book; we've been waiting for Xcor and Layla's story for so long! And I loved it. The ending was a little corny, but I'm still insanely happy it ended that way. The storyline also seemed a little set-up, but that was generally explainable, too. Thus, this was probably one of my favorite books in the series yet. Now I can't wait to get my hands on the next one; I have a feeling I will be switching over to the Black Dagger Legacy books just to keep me company until the next one comes out.

Review: I'm very happy with this installment. It broke from the pattern, there was no Roarke saving the day/Eve. Eve was a badass dealing with her issues, and Roarke takes NONE of her shit. Peabody is annoying me less and less, especially with McNab in the picture. He's freakin hilarious.

Close to Home (Westen, #1) by Suzanne Ferrell
Title/Link: Close To Home by Suzanne Ferrell
Date Read May 4, 2017
My Rating: ★★★★

My Review:

This was a neat small-town story. At first I was a little concerned with our hero. He came across as a huge jerk with overly judgmental qualities, but he quickly learned the error of his ways. Emma is a great heroine. She cares for her grieving mother (widowed within the last year) and twin boys from her failed marriage. I liked that she's a hard worker and cares deeply for people in general. I also thought the author did a good job of showing the various stresses single moms deal with when raising children on their own. The suspense wasn't anywhere near what I expected and the ending was too neat and tidy, but it was still a very entertaining read. I'll look for more work by the author.

Review : Medieval romance by Julie Garwood set in England. As with many of her heroines, here also Elizabeth is a good healer. She is strong and brave. The child in this book is her brother who is 7 years old. When we meet him he doesn't speak and he has forgotten his childhood as he had witnessed the massacre of his family. Then there was the grandfather who was funny and witty . Overall it was an enjoyable read.

Bookcover/link : SEMMAARI செம்மாரி by Samura | 298 pages
Date read : May 4
Rating : 5
Review : It was an amazing historical fiction. The author has created a wonderful story around a game called Aadu puli attam. When Semmaari, a goat herd helps a sculptor in winning the game against a stranger, he did not know that the game was part of a ploy by the neighboring kingdom. It is similar to a cat and mouse game where in here it is Aadu(goat) and Puli(Tiger). Semmaari has 16 people with him similar to the 16 goat coins in the game and 3 enemies (tigers) try to kill him and the story is about how he wins against them. Enjoyable.

I was thinking we could all do one rec per person? That as my plan anyway.

message 219: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (thesebooksaremyfriends) Rachel, for you I pick #Nerd I could not put this series down. All of them are on Kindle Unlimited and I read them in like a week. Seriously.

Poongothai, for you I pick The Bourbon Thief Given that I had tried this author and hated her, I was surprised at this book. I really really liked it and kind of want to go back and read it again now that I'm recommending it for you.

Becky, for you I pick Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor Such a good series. I think this was my first Kleypas but I'm not sure. Definitely you need to read this.

Anna Serene, for you I pick Hell & High Water I'm still mad that none of my libraries had past the first book because I really liked it.

Louise, for I pick Exit, Pursued by a Bear One of the best books I read in 2016

I don't have one, but I could make one to be sure that I can get what I need in time from the library. Staci - I do have Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor : )

I'll check back in 30 minutes.

Anna Serene (anna_serene) Stacie, I pick Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy, #1) by Ilona Andrews . It'll get you ready for the next book coming out :)

Rachel, for you I pick Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop . I think you should start your Anne Bishop journey with this series. I hope you like it!!

Poongothai, for you I picked The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern because its awesome and I loved this one.

Becky, for you I picked Daughter of the Blood (The Black Jewels, #1) by Anne Bishop because you've already read and liked the Others series I think it's time you start on the Black Jewels ;)

Louise, for you I had a little trouble but I decided on Bittersweet (True North, #1) by Sarina Bowen . It's really sweet and I really liked it.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 731 comments Okay, Ladies! Here are my picks for you. If you need a re-pick, just let me know and I'll make another recommendation for you. Happy reading!

Anna Serene, my pick for you is Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Storm Front by Jim Butcher, because everybody needs to meet Harry and (hopefully) get hooked on the series. Just FYI - the audiobooks are AMAZING.

Louise, for you I picked The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I haven't read the book yet, but I've seen the movie and I've heard the book is absolutely fabulous!

Poongothai, my pick for you is Dancing on Coals by Ellen O'Connell Dancing on Coals by Ellen O'Connell, simply because she is my favorite Historical Western Romance author and she's written several of my favorites. She writes amazing heroines who are strong, likable women.

Rachel C., for you I picked Cold-Hearted Rake (The Ravenels, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas. It was a hard pick as you have a TON of amazing books on your TBR! This one was a stand out though and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It's an amazing intro to The Ravenels series.

Stacie, for you I picked The Aeronaut's Windlass (The Cinder Spires, #1) by Jim Butcher The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. It was my first steampunk novel and is full of fantasy, unique characters, and airship battles. It's different from his other work, yet extremely entertaining.

Rachel C. (rachelus) | 611 comments Anna, so, I was looking through your tower shelf and I'm so glad someone else loves the Sword of Truth series! It's so hard to find people who have read it and it's so, so good! :) Unfortunately I haven't read anything else on your indicated shelf, so I don't feel right picking from there. Thus, for you, how about: Captive Prince (Captive Prince, #1) by C.S. Pacat . Another really well done series, and very, very addicting :)

Becky, I recommend Red Rising (Red Rising, #1) by Pierce Brown . There are no words for how awesome I found this trilogy to be. None. Well, other than "awesome" which doesn't actually quite cover it. Definitely a must-read and I couldn't pass up recommending it when I saw it on your TBR.

Louise, I recommend The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss . Loved this series! The main character is a perfect combination of hilarious, witty and moody. And he has an amazing set of stories. If only Patrick Rothfuss would hurry along and publish the third book... Definitely worth reading :)

Poongothai, I amazingly have not read any books that you haven't read that are on your TBR, so I'm going a little outside the box and giving you something new :) For you, based on what you seem to rate highly, I'd recommend Swept off Her Feet by Hester Browne which is an adorable, somewhat light, fascinating and very fun read.

Stacie, for you I recommend The Pact by Karina Halle . I really enjoyed this one; it was the first true friends-to-lovers romance I read and I remember it very fondly! It's got just the right amount of turmoil and sweet moments all mixed together

Poongothai (poongsa) | 298 comments My Picks for you all are

Rachel C - Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie - a funny book with lots of witty banter
Louise - Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty - Interesting book with lots of unexpected twists
Anna Serene - Vision in White (Bride Quartet, #1) by Nora Roberts - sweet story with a beta hero. one of Nora Robert's best
Stacie - Ride with Me by Ruthie Knox - It has two of my favorite romance tropes - opposites attract and road trip
Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ - Catch of the Day (Gideon's Cove, #1) by Kristan Higgins - a sweet book which is funny and heartwarming with interesting secondary characters

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 731 comments Thank you for the recommendations Rachel and Poongothai! This is going to be a TOUGH choice. All of my recs have been books I'm eager to read.

Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom, #1) by Devon Monk

Interesting concept and an intriguing world, but I think I've read too many Kate Daniels books lately. I kept finding myself comparing the two series, which was sort of a bummer. I think I'll be revisiting this book again sometime down the road when I can put some distance between the two series in my head. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book and it made me laugh out loud quite a few times, but it was somewhat predictable and I didn't have an urge to read it at every possible opportunity. Still, I'm glad I read it and I'll be continuing the series.

Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor (Friday Harbor, #1) by Lisa Kleypas
Title/Link Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor by Lisa Kleypas
Date Read May 9
My Rating: ★★★★

My Review:

I'm a huge fan of Lisa Kleypas's historical romance novels and I was thrilled to finally read one of her contemporary books. This was a delightful read with wonderful characters! The story summary gave the impression that I was in for a serious tear-jerker, but that wasn't the case. While the story is appropriately emotional when necessary, there is humor as life goes on. The story spans the better part of seven months, which allows time for healing as well as character growth and development.

Our leading lady, Maggie, is my favorite character and I loved how she interacts with Mark's niece, Holly. The chemistry between Mark and Maggie has just enough angst in it to make it really interesting. Both of them are dealing with the fallout of tragedies in their lives and question if a romantic relationship would be appropriate. This all makes for a wonderful book that I'll definitely read again in the future!

Another perk that I enjoyed was the relationship between Mark and the other bachelors. The Thanksgiving Day scene was hilarious and I'm eager to read more. I'll be moving on to book two soon!

A big THANK YOU to Stacie for the recommendation! : )
