Task #50.1 - Let's start at the very beginning...
Book One: Read a book that fulfills a task from the 5 or 10 point tasks from the fall 2009 challenge. I chose task 10.7, to read a book about a hero/heroine and read Conspiracy of Ravens by Lila Bowen. Nettie Lonesome has become a mysterious figure called The Shadow. Being The Shadow is more of a calling, though s/he describes it as a job. S/he feels a pull, almost a compulsion, to do these things, because it's the right thing to do, the thing that needs doing. S/he's very brave, and puts her own life on the line killing the monsters. Along the way, she also saves a few other people even though she is reluctant to get involved. I think it shows greatness of soul and great fortitude because s/he often has to give up (or thinks s/he does) the things she wants in life in order to pursue and dispose of the targets, but she does it anyway, and the thing that needs killing is quite often hurting vulnerable or innocent people (359pp).
Book 2: Read a book that is set within 200 miles of the place where you were born. I read Carolina Skeletons by David Stout. The book is set in Manning, SC which is 147 miles by car from the town where I was born (288pp).
Book 3, option SO: Read a novel that is historical fiction. I read The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey, first published 2012, set in the 1920s (386pp).
