I am reading Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson. It's a great summer read - bright, fun and well-written.

L J | 714 comments Started out July with Summer Shifter Nights: Multi-Author Box Set from Shifters in Love. Some of the stories were fun reads. Some were not. The longest "story" turned out to be a 279 page cliffhanger by V. Vaughn. I tried another Vaughn I had. It was also part of a long serial. Learned Vaughn writes long serials, not something I enjoy. Contributed to my project to knock books off my tbr shelf author by author.

Helen (helennn) | 1015 comments Girl In A Storm by Helen Ellis is the second of a pair of Australian stories by Helen Ellis. Unfortunately, Goodreads seems to have confused the Australian Helen, who wrote this, and an American author by the same name. The first book in this series, Girl You're on Fire, is also missing on Goodreads, even though available on Amazon.
These books include romance, mystery, murder and adventure, in the everyday life of a small Australian town, depicted accurately and fondly by the author.

Let me guess..........you're the "Helen" who wrote them! Am I right? If so, this goes under self-promotion.

Absolutely NOT. I wouldn't be so crass. Helen is a very common name. I have met the Helen who writes them, but she lives in a completely different part of Australia to me. I enjoy her writing, and like to support good Australian writers.
I thought these might appeal to others who enjoy cozy books, though the mystery is just a small part of them.

Information on Amazon is also confusing. She needs to straighten this out so people can find her and her books.

The Goodreads librarian group can fix the confusion when two authors have the same name. They give them different code numbers and a note appears on each author's page letting readers know that there is another author in the database with the same name.

That's what I was thinking. I looked at Amazon. There appear to be 4 authors named Helen Ellis plus a Helen E. Ellis. The author(s) need to contact Amazon and Goodreads to get their books listed with the right Helen Ellis.

Tried Overdrive Libby app for #6 but ended up uninstalling. Doesn't work on kindle fire or nook. Does not have text-to-speech built in and didn't work with TTS I use. So slow to load short ebook I did not to try audio. Slow to page. Slow to bring book back up when returning. Not a good app for me.

Beth | 104 comments Dear Mrs. Bird by AJ Pearce. This is a cozy without a mystery. A young woman during the Blitz who wants to be a war correspondant takes a job with a women’s magazine to sort through letters for the advice (agony aunt) column. So far it’s a fast read and it would have been perfect for a reading slump.

I recently listened to A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. The dragons played a supporting role in the story, but if you're looking for books on dragons you may want to check it out. My all time favorite dragon books are The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey.

L J | 714 comments MadameZelda wrote: "L.J., I read the first two in the Innkeeper Chronicles. I'm having a tough time getting through One Fell Sweep, however."

I agree One Fell Sweep has some tough parts to it. Book 4 is supposed to be the last one in the main Innkeeper series. Sweep of the Blade is 3.5 and best thought of as Innkeeper World not Innkeeper. Ilona Andrews' characters go through tough times but the tendency is the tougher the time the greater the reward. Dina deserves a huge reward.

Beth | 104 comments A first in a new series, A Tale of Two Murders (A Dickens of a Crime #1) by Heather Redmond. It's about Charles Dickens before he became a novelist. I enjoy novels with heavy dialogue so I'm enjoying this one. A mix of fictional characters and people from history.

L J | 714 comments The Wolf's Secret Vegas Bride by Eve Langlais was a quick fun read.
Started the Jake Hines series with Triple Play (Jake Hines, #1) by Elizabeth Gunn Triple Play by Elizabeth Gunn. I managed to put series together after reading #3 years ago. Triple Play is the first book. There is a short story that may or may not come before it in the timeline but since there's disagreement on that I am going to read in publication order. The books are first person police procedurals. She evidently consulted several police officers to get procedure details accurate. The tone is similar to cozies in that Jake's day is mix of personal and professional. Personalities of characters and setting are done similar to cozies.
The crime scenes are graphic. For those who read them, think J.D. Robb in Death series and you'll get the idea of how graphic. Both series focus on character and world building not just who-done-it. Not all police procedural books do this but I prefer ones that do.

Recently started Guardians of the West (The Malloreon, #1) by David Eddings Guardians of the West by David Eddings. Sadly not available for purchase in E book format in the US. Good thing I have the series in hardcover. Also have Swords and Deviltry (Fafhrd and Gray Mouser #1) by Fritz Leiber Swords and Deviltry by Fritz Leiber in the currently reading stack. It's been on their website. I think Edge ended not long before the first installment of Clean Sweep. I remember being ridiculously excited when George and Jack made their brief appearance about three fourths of the way through Clean Sweep.
