Ramla Zareen Ahmad | 107 comments Hi all, hope you're fine!

I'm posting in the group after a long time. Looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. And to catching up on all the cozy news I've missed :-)

Anyway, I've been reading a lot of Sweet Contemporary Romances lately. Here's one that I especially loved:

What He Wants What He Wants (Baxter Boys, #1) by Jessie Gussman by Jessie Gussman.

I also recently read The Undomestic Goddess The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella by Sophie Kinsella. It's a cross between Chick-Lit and Romantic Comedy. I'd been saving it for a special treat (I do that sometimes, lol), and I thoroughly enjoyed it :-)

Welcome back!

Still taking a break from cozies, and reading Dorothea Benton Frank's Low Country books, one after another and in order for the very first time. I love these books. They leave me feeling relaxed, and in tune with the slow, sleepy backwaters and sunny beaches of the Low Country of South Carolina. In fact, there may be sand between my toes right now!

Mardi D (teapotter) | 5 comments I decided to take a short break from mysteries and am currently reading My Life in France by Julia Child. What an interesting lady and an easy read! Never ever thought I would find myself so totally enjoying something that is not fiction.

Rebecca (mamanyt) | 129 comments I'm STILL binging on Dorothea Benton Frank, and am now on "Porch Lights." Porch Lights by Dorothea Benton Frank

I'll be back to my cozies fairly soon, though, another week or so. I have several series all lined up, complete and ready to read! I tend to binge-read series, so that I can immerse myself in that world for the duration.

I remember how much I loved that series, again, back in the 60's! I actually breifly met Andre Norton at Chattacon, one of the very last events she did. Her health was very poor, but she was so gracious. I have the entire Witchworld series on my "To Buy" list, although they're hard to find now. Eventually I'll have them all again!

I recently started reading Witch World because the description intrigued me. However I soon decided that the book was not my cup of tea and I marked it as DNF. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it after you finish it.

I am enjoying it so far. I should point out that I started reading this back in the 1960s and DNF. That is probably because it is more "adult" than Norton's better known works that worked better for my junior sci-fi fan brain. I was reading things like The Time Traders and her other sf at the time.

Ami Morrison I am listening to the audiobook of Earthcore by Scott Sigler. A nice, creepy creature feature horror story. I've been trying to get every book club I'm in to read it for at least a year and a half without any success, lol. Couldn't wait any longer. XD

Last week I read Fields' Guide to Abduction by Julie Mulhern. She writes a cozy series that's a favorite of mine (Country Club Murders). This series (Poppy Fields' Adventures) is definitely not a cozy. The body count is high and there are violent scenes. It's still a good read with a unique main character.

Beth | 104 comments Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler. I’m only a few chapters in and I love the characters. It’s a modern retelling of the Taming of the Shrew and a quick read. I’ve been looking for a fun read and this fits the bill.

message 632: by Ami (new)

Ami Morrison Neverworld Wake

I don't read that much YA, but I really like this author a lot. I'm hoping it's as good as her last book.

Heather | 195 comments In addition to cozies, I have been reading a series with my daughter. At first I thought, “You’ve got to be kidding me!” But after I got past my preconceived motions about dragons talking in novels, I have become slightly obsessed with the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland! Really great stories, and I’m just thrilled that my daughter is reading...voluntarily!!!

L J | 714 comments Still trying to catch up on and fill in gaps on series author by author. Many of these are cozy series but some are ones that cross genre lines.
K.M. Shea writes books that are far more than simply retold fairy tales. The women are strong characters not just romance figures. Adventure and mystery on a continent where characters from well known fairy tales live in various countries and have very interesting encounters.
Currently reading The Snow Queen The Complete Saga Books 1-3 Heart of Ice, Sacrifice, Snowflakes by K.M. Shea The Snow Queen: The Complete Saga: Books 1-3: Heart of Ice, Sacrifice, Snowflakes.
If you like cats Puss in Boots (Timeless Fairy Tales, #6) by K.M. Shea Puss in Boots is quite a character but I would suggest starting with Beauty and the Beast (Timeless Fairy Tales, #1) by K.M. Shea Beauty and the Beast to get the feel of the world Shea is creating. Don't be put off by the romantic look of the alternative cover for Beauty, Elle is decidedly not that kind of woman. The Snow Queen books are generations prior to these but in the same universe.

Beth | 104 comments I’m reading an historical mystery, Claws of the Cat (Shinobi Mystery #1) by Susan Spann. It’s set in Kyoto in the 1500’s. So far it’s very interesting & I’m learning a lot about medieval Japan's samurai and shinobi (ninjas).

OK...this has got to be...werebadgers? O MY! I may have to read this series, especially since you say they make you laugh.

message 645: by L J (last edited Apr 12, 2019 08:03PM) (new)

L J | 714 comments As much as I dislike violence in cozies Laurenston plays violence for laughs. I think of the characters as being able to shift to human rather than humans who can shift to other forms. Bite Me is part of the Pride series but I think it is readable alone. Livy in Bite Me is badger as is the middle sister in the Honey Badger Chronicles. The oldest sister, Charlie, is half badger half wolf. The youngest, Stevie, is half badger half tiger. Livy and the middle sister are cousins. There is usually some kind of mystery but they are not cozy and are usually considered paranormal romance.
Shelly Laurenston is also G.A. Aiken. Aiken dragons are dragons who can shift to human, quite different from humans who shift to dragon.

Read Mary Balogh since she was writing short regencies years ago. She, along with a few others I still read, can be relied on to deliver more than simply a romance superficially dressed in period clothing.

For those who enjoy historical fiction that will probably teach you a thing or two at the same time, I highly recommend The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, by Kim Michele Richardson. I read an ARC while on vacation last week, but the book is to be released early next month.
