Barb! Good Morning, how did you like the Princess Elizabeth's Spy Series? A friend of mine loves this series but I have not read this series yet.

Merry Christmas!

Pat Cray-Hollis | 179 comments I came across Mariah Stewart FBI series that I am enjoying.

Cozies I love but once and awhile I like to try something different.

Merry Christmas and Happy Reading!

I really like the series, Pat, I think at least in part because the MC is a woman doing 'important' work during WW2, rather than just being in the background or a supporting character. I'm up to book #5 now, which I hope to start next month... maybe?

message 554: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker (carstairs38) | 1278 comments I think it was the fifth book in the Maggie Hope series where I gave up. That one was really preachy with a weak mystery, or at least it felt that way to me. Others seem to still love the series, so it might just be me.

The first I read in this series was #5. I liked it. Didn't read #6, but did read #7 and found it quite so-so. Won't be reading more. The Maisie Dobbs series is SO superior to this one.

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson

Barbara Sousa | 504 comments I am currently enjoying the audio version of:
The Twelve Dogs of Christmas (Andy Carpenter, #15) by David Rosenfelt

Once again, David Rosenfelt has crafted a novel with just the right amount of mystery, legal drama and humor.

And, as a bonus, it takes place at Christmas!

Rebecca (mamanyt) | 129 comments I've gone on a Maeve Binchy kick here lately, re-reading old favorites, and picking up the few of her books I haven't yet read. I'll probably be doing that for the next few weeks. I just flat love her prose. Reading Binchy, for me, is like slipping into a warm tub of water on a cold winter's night...all the tiny stresses and anxieties of the day just drift away, and I am transported to a gentle, peaceful place.

Come to think of it, Anne River Siddons and Dorothea Benton Frank affect me in much the same way.

message 562: by L J (new)

L J | 714 comments Still reading holiday books, mostly paranormal romance like The Bite Before Christmas (Argeneau #15.5) (Night Huntress #6.5). There are Christmas cozies I haven't read but most are in the middle of series. Added the series to my list to take another look at after the first of the year when I put together my series list for 2019.

The Holmes on the Range books are so much fun. They are cozies by my, admittedly broad, definition.

message 574: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker (carstairs38) | 1278 comments I can definitely see some people considering them cozies. I'm being extremely narrow in my definition these days, but I can see the argument that they are.

Either way, they are absolutely fun.

message 575: by L J (new)

L J | 714 comments Read High Stakes by Hannah Jayne in Predatory. It has secondary character from Underworld Detection Agency series as engaging and annoying main character narrator. It might be described as weird near cozy paranormal who-done-it. I'm going to try the series because negative reviews say it is not the typical urban fantasy the readers were expecting. I put the series on my themed cozy list which is where I put the Holmes on the Range series.

For anyone who uses notes field: Updates to notes are not saving whether you post in column or on My Activity. Thought others needed to know this if, like me, you use the notes field for important information like due dates. This bug has been reported.
Update: Thankfully this is fixed. Now I need to re-enter info.

Rebecca (mamanyt) | 129 comments Tomorrow I'll have finished "Lost Books and Old Bones," and will be starting on "Becoming" by Michelle Obama. After that, I'm taking a break from cozies for awhile, but simply because I have so many other books piled up, waiting while I read cozies instead! I have a big stack of Dorothea Benton Frank books to read, as well as Maeve Binchy. I'll be back to my cozies by the end of March, though!

message 593: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (mamanyt) | 129 comments I'm still working on "Becoming." This is a slow read for me. NOT because the story isn't interesting (it assuredly is), or that the prose is tedious (it almost sings in places), but because I realized by page 2 that I would need time to really absorb this book. And by page 5, I realized that I would also have to reread it with my trusty Post It tabs with the little arrows in hand, to mark passages that I want to transcribe into my One Note "Wisdom" notebook. For instance, when Michelle's mother says, "I'm not raising babies, I'm raising adults."

message 600: by L J (new)

L J | 714 comments I like how Robyn Carr writes characters and how she writes about communities but I felt a bit lost when reading Sullivan's Crossing #4 The Best of Us (Sullivan's Crossing, #4) by Robyn Carr The Best of Us. The scope of the book was too broad to allow me to become attached to characters. A lot of the book was catching up with previous couples. There were three new couples. Of the 6 people only Sully is a well established character from previous books. Despite the book jumping from couple to couple there seemed to be more time devoted to Leigh and to me she was the least interesting character.
