Margo | 11663 comments I saw a lot of complaints about Fikry but I enjoyed it. I think it a bit tongue-in-cheek and was a book about books but what's wrong with that? I will definitely reread at some stage.

I agree, Margo. I thought it was a delightful little book that was really easy to read and very charming.

I've had this one on my list for awhile too KimeyDiann. Interested to hear how it goes for you.

message 760: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I read The Foxhole Court for the toppler and White is for Witching for both the toppler and the survey challenge. I thought The Foxhole Court was very poor, but I quite enjoyed White is for Witching, even though it was a slightly strange book.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've started A Morbid Taste for Bones for the toppler and my survey challenge.

message 762: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments @Lilisa, I finished Yellow Crocus last night. I think I kept putting it off because it deals with such a hard topic, but I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it. I gave it 5 stars! Even though it is a very hard and emotional subject, it wasn't written in a graphic and overwhelming way.
I highly recommend reading it!

message 763: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I loved Yellow Crocus too, Kimey. I also gave it 5 stars.

message 764: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Pfew, I read like crazy the past two weeks. First to finish a book before the start of the toppler, and then during the toppler. I won't get any more toppler books in and I will take a break from reading for now, but tomorrow I'll start Mr. Mercedes for the group read and my survey challenge.

Sold! :-)

message 768: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I have just finished The Painted Veil which I loved. A great commentory on the follies of romantic "love" and the pitfalls of marriage.

I am now reading Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass. A real change of past :-)

message 769: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Glad you enjoyed The Painted Veil, Margo. It has been on my radar for years but I have never picked it up. I might have to give it more priority. Have you seen the film with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts?

message 770: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I read 5 books for the toppler:

Beartown
The Ballroom
The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender
The Girl in 6E
The Long Hard Road Out of Hell

So now it's back to regular reading.
Finishing December (paperback)
Starting Norse Mythology (audiobook). My library hold was released a couple of days ago. Woot!

message 771: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Do let me know what you think of Norse Mythology Janice! I really enjoyed it. I love Loki and Thor even more now.

I read Survivor, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry for the toppler. The latter two I can also use for my all about me challenge. Now back to The Butterfly Garden for the the group read.

message 772: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am also now returning to The Butterfly Garden. Oh deep joy!

Ouch, Anne! That must be painful! I hope it eases up soon. Looking forward to hearing what you think of The Butterfly Garden. A few of us have been struggling with it, but fingers crossed you will enjoy it more.

I'll be interested in your thoughts too. Lexx is reading it as well now, as he got it for his birthday.

message 780: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I finished The Light Between Oceans last night. I stayed awake reading til 2.30 am to finish it. It was a very compelling read but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Very morally ambiguous. Still I gave it 4 stars.

I'll be watching for your comments. I was a did-not finish. I usually love Gaiman but this one... couldn't,

message 783: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I enjoyed Norse Mythology. Gaiman is such a great story teller, and listening to him read the stories was awesome. I'm not a huge fan of anthologies but they flowed together so well. I feel like I know the gods better and understand more about their stories. Loki is my favourite. Always a sucker for a handsome man. Hehehe!

message 784: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Claire Danes narrate The Handmaid's Tale this afternoon. It was disturbing and awesome at the same time. I am currently readig Esperanza Rising because I like to keep up with what my grandson is being exposed to in school. He is in 6th grade and his teacher was reading this book to her class. He said it was a good story, and I have to agree, so far. Trying to catch up on the threads while I was gone on vacation, I see that this book will qualify for the June challenge for me too.

Oh no! I can see why some people might not enjoy it. I think Gaiman did a good job of telling the norse myths but I guess it doesn't leave much room for adding your own flourishes. Some of the stories were dark so it fitted his writing. I have been known to to not like short stories much but I thought they worked in this collection as they had the same characters and there was a natural progression to it which I enjoyed. I was so keen to learn about the norse gods and have Gaiman tell me about it was great. Perhaps for those without the interest, it would not be so enjoyable. And I agree Janice - Loki was one of my favourites too.

message 788: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished December finally! It feels like this was a long drawn out affair. I started out on audiobook, but couldn't follow it. So I purchased the paperback. It's a chunkster which I had to set aside for the toppler. It's densely plotted with frequent switching between several POV's. If it hadn't been for the resulting confusion, I would have given this 5 stars.

Today, it's a new slate all the way around. On audiobook, I will start Watership Down for the monthly challenge.

On ebook, I will start the group read The Night Sister.

message 789: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments I put a couple of books aside for the toppler, which I need to get back to, but first I am reading A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty for the monthly challenge and The Butterfly Garden for the group read.

I listened to this version of The Handmaid's Tale too. I enjoyed it very much. Like you said, disturbing and awesome.

message 791: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19224 comments The Handmaid's Tale is one that I put aside for the toppler. I plan to get back to it eventually. I wasn't loving it, but I've been told to stick with it.

Kristie, you might enjoy Atwood's The Blind Assassin. I gave it 5 Stars (and I'm stingy with those.) My Review

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Esperanza Rising for the monthly challenge.

Next, I am going back to The Lies of Locke Lamora. I started and read the first 12 pages while I was on vacation, but I think I need to start over again.

I'll be curious what you think of Locke Lamora. I really must get back to that series.

message 797: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I'm listening to Red Sister. It's not at all what * expected. So far it's like Hogwarts with attitude!

message 798: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Margo wrote: "I'm listening to Red Sister. It's not at all what * expected. So far it's like Hogwarts with attitude!"

Is it set in the same world as the Broken Empire series? I know a couple of his series are linked.

message 799: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments It's my first Lawrence so I'm not sure but I think I read something about it being a "dramatic departure from his broken empire series". Doesn't mean it's not the same world tho ;-)

message 800: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Ok. That's good to know. There is no mention of the broken empire in the blurb whereas in the other spin off series there is so I'm guessing this can be read separately. Sounds interesting.
