Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Butterfly Garden for this month's group read. I was not a fan. Here is my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I have also picked up Son of the Shadows again after putting it aside for the toppler.

I'm eagerly waiting for the next book in the series to be published. It's already been postponed once.

message 803: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I know. Not sure what's going on there. That's two books in the series postponed - the prequel and book 4. Odd.

message 804: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I may have to relisten to The Republic of Thieves when it does come out just to refresh my mind. There's a total of 7 books planned for the series.

The other one I'm waiting for is the next in the Matthew Corbett series. There's not even a placeholder for it in the Goodread's catalogue.

message 805: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2091 comments I'm currently listening to Lies of Locke Lamora and really enjoying it.

message 807: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I really got fed up with Red Sister. Way too many fight scenes for my taste. I Might finish it sometime. My first taste of Mark Lawrence has not been a success :(

I've started On Canaan's Side and it's delighting me. Both the narration and the writing are wonderful :-)

message 808: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Burton Just got done with the second Secret Circle book so now I'm going to be starting a Amelia Atwater Rhodes book

Oh, that's a shame, Margo. I didn't get on overly well with the first book of his that I read, Prince of Thorns, and was hoping this one would be better. I will probably still read it but I'm not going to give it as much priority now. Constant fight scenes are not my thing either.

message 810: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started The Rose Garden for the monthly challenge. Really enjoying it so far, I love the descriptions of Cornwall and Trelawny house.

message 811: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Son of the Shadows for the survey challenge. I put it aside for a couple of weeks for the toppler and for the group read otherwise I would have got through it a lot quicker. I absolutely loved it and gave it 5 stars. This is turning into a fantastic series and I can't wait to read the remaining four books.

I am now starting Days Without End for the monthly challenge.

message 812: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I put that series in my wish list Lisa. It sounds good.

I am thinking of reading Days Without End soon too. What is the challenge link?

It's a great series, Margo. I think you would really enjoy it.

Days Without End works for L - LGBT in the challenge.

Oh, good thinking! That didn't even occur to me!

I have just finished On Canaan's Side and it has with a serious book hangover. It was wonderful.

I have just added On Canaan's Side to my wishlist, Margo. I think Sebastian Barry could end up becoming a favourite author of mine. I have only read the first two chapters of Days Without End and I already think it's going to be a good one. The narrative voice is so distinct and interesting.

message 817: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I hear that the new one got some bad reviews but I still expect to enjoy it. He is an amazing writer.

Yes, it has had some bad reviews, although most of the ones I have read have been positive. I can understand why, it's definitely not a book everyone would enjoy. It's working for me though :) Hopefully it will work for you too.

message 819: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished the group themed read, The Night Sister. I was expecting more from it on the weight of McMahon's The Winter People.

I will start Arthur today. It's been on my to-read shelf forever.

message 820: by Annerlee (last edited Jun 17, 2017 03:47PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2873 comments I'm listening to NOS4R2 by Joe Hill (Audible audiobook). It's amazing so far.. the reader is Kate Mulgrew. I have the kindle version too, but this is the first time that I actually prefer being read to. Excellent.
(I just wish I'd chosen car and not truck for the year challenge.)

NOS4R2 by Joe Hill

message 821: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I have that on audio and I chose car. Do you think I put the two together? Not at all!

I picked that one up on Audible, but haven't listened to it yet. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I also have this one on Audible. :) I'm planning to listen to it closer to December because I think it is set around that time of year. I thought it would be a nice contrast to my holiday reads. Glad you're loving it!

message 824: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I finished Watership Down for the monthly challenge. I wasn't enjoying it until it reached middle of the book. That's over 8 hours of struggling. End result, I liked it but didn't love it like everyone else.

I've started a 3 hours prequel to the Sorcery Ascendency Sequence Series, At the Sign of the Crow and Moon. Once I finish it, I'll dive into the first book of the series, A Crucible of Souls.

message 825: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - I read Watership Down many, many years ago and I have always felt that I liked it when the book is mentioned. However, I have tried to listen to the Audible version twice now, and I just cannot get past the first couple of chapters.

The audidle version I have is narrated by Ralph Cosham and he makes the story very dreary. I love the print version too.

I am listening to I, Claudius and loving it. I'm struck by how little politics has changed - okay they don't literally murder each other these days but figuratively...?

message 828: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Cherie & Margo, I blamed the narrator during the first half of Watership Down. It was Ralph Cosham on my edition as well. The story, and his narration, did improve after the 8 hour mark. The only reason I kept going was that so many of my friends gave this 5 or 4 stars. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I had read a print edition.

message 829: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments I'm having a bad run of books this week. I finished The Grail Quest and gave it 2 stars. I didn't realize it was going to be a New-Age story in the style of The Celestine Prophecy. There was a day when I probably would have loved it. This is the second book of J.R. Rain's that I've read, and both got 2 stars.

I've started Circle of Bones on ebook.

message 830: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments I read Watership Down as a kid and I remember loving it. I haven't read it as an adult, but I also have the audio version. I haven't tried it yet.

I seem to be in a reading slump which may have affected my outlook. I'm reading the same amount of books, just not enjoying them as much.

message 832: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19227 comments I'm in a bit of a slump too. I'm reading a bit less and feel meh about most everything.

message 833: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Half the year is gone already, and I've only given out one 5 star. That's unusual. This last week, I've been dishing out 2 and 3 stars.

I was going to read Great Expectations next, but I think I need to postpone that one for a bit.

message 834: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I finished The Butterfly Garden for the group read and have moved on to Kafka on the Shore for a buddy read.

message 835: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 660 comments I just finished 1Q84 for the yearly challenge and loved it. I enjoyed how the characters were developed and the stories slowly revealed. This was only my second Haruki Murakami book (after Norwegian Wood), but I already truly enjoy his style and imagination. There will be more :)

message 837: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Andreda | 19 comments Just started The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King

message 838: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11289 comments In the last few days I finished A Map of the World and rated it only 2 stars. The writing was promising, but I didn't enjoy the story at all.
I also read The Night Sister for the monthly reading, a quick read, totally out of my zone of comfort, full of flaws, but it was ok.
I am reading now Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, #3 in the Neapolitan Novels/My Brilliant Friend Series. It is being a great reading, as I knew it would.
I should also start Night today or tomorrow for my book club meeting next week.

I agree about his life writing style. I've just started one of his. I haven't read 1Q84 but it's on my wishlist already.

message 840: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I'm reading Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. for the monthly challenge. So far it is... different. I don't really think this is a good bedtime book. I tend to read until I can't hold my eyes open and when I do that, I often don't remember the last page or so that I read, so I have to backtrack when I pick the book back up. I had to backup more than just a page or two last night because I was so confused as to what was going on. Hopefully it gets easier as I continue. Chapter 2 seemed to flow a little better last night.

message 841: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments I loved it Kimey. Okay, it does take off in some strange directions (!!!) but it is the best anti-war book I ever heard. The version I listened to was narrated by Ethan Hawke. He did an excellent job but still not bedtime listening ;-)

message 842: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I may download the audio companion for it. I don't know which would be better, reading or listening. The version I can add to the Kindle version is narrated by James Franco. He could be interesting to listen to.

message 843: by Sarah (last edited Jun 21, 2017 12:55PM) (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I struggled with it. I listened to the audio and i lost track of what was going on but it was an old narration. Actually i think ethan hawke narrated mine. Best but about it.

message 844: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments I'm currently reading Blue Monday from Nicci French. A collegua of mine recommended it and i've almost finished it. I fowarder a bit to the end to see if the boy will survive.

message 845: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11663 comments Saar, I've had that one on my shelf for ages. Look forward to hearing how you get on with ii ;-)

message 846: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading Three Junes this afternoon. I really liked it. I was not sure at first, but it got my 5 stars by the ending.

I am still working my way through The Lies of Locke Lamora. Camorr is an interesting city and the Gentlemen Bastards are very entertaining.

I am also listening to A Prayer for Owen Meany. I love the narration by Joe Barrett
I am sorry I put it off for so long. The 26 hrs and 53 minutes always seemed too long, but I only have 10 hrs and 45 minutes left.

message 847: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Not big on Mark Lawrence myself

Scott Lynch had a huge space between a couple books due to an illness. If books are being postponed again I would hazard a guess that his health has again gone South. Last time health delayed the book by 7 years I believe.

I loved Owen Meant the narration is so good

Haven't read IQ84 yet. It has been one with some bad reviews by even his loyal fans so I've been hesitant. I will read it eventually. Mostly on account of Sarah doing buddy reads I've been rereading murakam. I'll have to go through all of them. I don't seem to retain much of his novels so it's like puzzling it all out for the first time. They can get so strange and yet I love them. I just like the way he writes and the descriptions he uses. I always get sucked right in to them even if I don't always understand them.

I loved it too, Margo. But it is not a book with a properly story, just like I said a while ago to Sarah... (who struggled with it) is a book about nothing (apparently); not a bed book, I would say, and not to read when you are tired (it's a little demanding...)

I was reading his blog and he apparently struggles with anxiety attacks. I've been there, so I know what it's like.

message 850: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2652 comments I have a couple of books of Murakami, but I need to read them. I've read What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and I had such a fun reading it. I've started The Strange Library, but no time to read further.
