Shelf: Kickass Hero
Book: Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels, #5.5) by Ilona Andrews
Date read: 3/23
Rating: 4 stars

Review: I love Andrea in the Kate Daniels books. But I don't think I would want to see her have her own series. One book is enough. I do like the book, but I think I could get tired of all Andrea. But the book does have other good qualities. Namely, Raphael & Roman. I would like to read a Roman book. I want him to find someone and be happy. :)

Book: Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost
Date Read: 3/24
Rating: 3 stars

Review: I guess I'm just tired of books where the guy is a jerk, but it's okay because he has reasons and the girl can totally fall for him even before she really knows those reasons. And we're supposed to just accept it because the author throws in some really steamy sex scenes. Don't get me wrong. I ended up really liking Bones. And Cat wasn't too terribly whiney. But, while the mythology of the vampires was a bit different, the formula was just not perfect this time. I will pick up the next one if I need it for a challenge, but I won't go out of my way to read it earlier.

Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Rating: 4 stars

Review

I really enjoyed this one! I haven't read the prior series that this is related to, but I really had no problem figuring out how the world worked and was able to jump right in. From the first chapter, my interest was hooked. There weren't really a whole lot of slow moments, and I often found myself pleasantly surprised with how the plot twisted and turned. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one!

Wow! I would never let my teen read this one. The sex was too explicit. It's one thing for her to read Written in Red or Mercy Thompson, where the sex is just mentioned in passing. But I wouldn't let her read this one (or even Kate Daniels). But I also know she wouldn't want to read it. I homeschool to help keep her innocent for as long as possible. :)

Don't get me wrong. I probably read books as a teen that I wouldn't let my teen read. :)

Review:
Number 2 to follow the infamous Anna Dressed in Blood.. I wasn't sure I wanted to read this one. The first one ended without a real cliffhanger, and I liked it but... it didn't GRAB me.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised with #2. I really enjoyed Girl of Nightmares! It moved along at a good pace and to boot we traveled to London! Maybe my recent visit there had an impact ;)
I enjoyed watching the characters mature and develop more into their roles of witch and ghost slayer. And we saw a their relationships grow as well.

A fun little action, paranormal, romance without all of the gooey lovey dovey stuff and definitely no sex. I liked it a lot! Simply said :D

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I should have my next in series book done tonight!

For 5 stars, I'm going to go with Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. It's about time for my annual reread of the series, and with how this past week has gone with sick kids, I'm going to need to read something that I know will move quickly!

message 271: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments That doesn't like much fun Steph Ann ... sick kids I mean. How's the new little one?

message 272: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments All 3 of them have colds, and the older two have pink eye. Thankfully, so far, the congestion hasn't affected my newborn's eating or sleeping! He's doing really well otherwise. He's very calm so far, which has eased the transition to three kids greatly!

On a related note, putting eye drops in a toddler's eyes gives you quite the workout lol.

That sucks. I had a little one have to go back into the hospital when the congestion ended up making her lethargic. I'm glad your guy is handling it well! And I'm glad you're doing well, as well.

message 274: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments If something is tagged 5 Star, rather than 5 Stars with an 'S' on the end, does it work? I'm hoping so, but figuring it probably doesn't. If it works I'll read Wood Sprites (Elfhome, #4) by Wen Spencer , if not I'll go with Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1) by Lisa Kleypas .

message 275: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments Vilda wrote: "Lol, aww, Steph Ann, sounds like a lot of work. Hope you're all well very quickly!

Laura, from what I've gathered, it must be the exact shelf name. Mine Till Midnight is very good!"

That's what I figured. I was all excited when I saw the tag in Wood Sprites, and then I noticed it didn't have the S. :)

And glad #3 son is calm Steph Ann, *fingers crossed* he doesn't get pink eye too. Can see wiggly little boys & eye drops not mixing well.

message 278: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments At least we can bribe the oldest with treats if he lets us put the eye drops in. Our 15 month old doesn't understand bribery yet though, so that's more of a wrestling match lol.

Legend (Legend, #1) by Marie Lu by Marie Lu
Read: 4/1/17
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:

I enjoyed this book much more than I expected! With so many dystopian YA books out there, they all get to sound alike. I found this book to be a quick read and for once, I liked the back and forth character narration. The book flips back and forth between antagonist and protagonist, which gives a good perspective on the story.

This was a well written book without a terrible obvious cliffhanger. And it had me wanting more!

We follow June and Day, opposites in every way. One a high level official of the Republic and the other one of the most wanted and elusive criminals in the nation. After a murder occurs we follow the characters along their paths which inevitably run into one another. Both soon realize that their opinions about the Republic may be more alike than they realize.

Review: This is my first historical by Lisa Kleypas. I quite enjoyed it. The characters were engaging, the story was interesting, and the setting was a favorite of mine. I find myself wanting to get into the next one to find out if Leo improves. Also, I had Frost nailed from the moment we saw him in their house. :)

My Soul to Save (Soul Screamers, #2) by Rachel Vincent

Read: 3/30/17
Rating: 3 stars

Review

While I did enjoy this second installment in the Soul Screamers series, I wasn't blown away by it. There's just something about the main characters that I'm not connecting with, perhaps the fact that they're teenagers and definitely act like it at times, which can be annoying lol. That being said, the storyline itself was interesting and kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen. I do enjoy the concept of the series and am intrigued enough to continue, even though I wasn't completely enthralled with this one.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Read: 4/4/2017
Rating: 4 stars

Review

I just love this series so much. There's definitely a reason I re-read it ever year! Even though I would say that this is probably the weakest book in the series, I still find it an entertaining and fast paced read. Andrews sets up the world and characters well, and the chemistry between Kate and Curran is already palpable in this first book. I'm definitely looking forward to continuing my re-read of the series!

Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity, #1) by Elizabeth Wein
by Elizabeth Wein
Read: 4/7/17
Rating: 4 Stars

Review:
This book was difficult for many reasons...
I had a tough time getting through the first part of this book. Who is writing this (narrating)? , was forefront in my mind. Is she telling the truth? Not to mention the brutality of it all. I would like to re-read this one to understand the first part better. That is after I can control my tears...
I switched between by ebook and audiobook version, each had their own positive. Listening is great for pronunciation of the foreign words as the ebook version was good for spelling.

This story is intense, deep and complicated... well written and seemingly well researched.
During wartime, we meet 2 young girls who are fighting their own battles to help win the war, one a pilot and the other a spy. The first half-ish of this book is written from the perspective of one character and the second half written by her best friend. Each of the young women have struggles and as you can imagine are difficult to survive.

Heart breaking yet inspirational.
