Steph Ann | 1220 comments I need to read that one again, Trinia! It's been a few years, and I don't remember much about it.

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Guilty Pleasures

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas

Read: 2/3/17
Rating: 4 stars

Review

This one was definitely faster paced than Book One! I spent most of the first book unsure of how I felt about Ceraena (probably butchered the spelling of that lol), but I liked her a lot more in this one. She actually got to show off her assassin skills many times here, proving that all her bragging in the first book wasn't just her ego talking. We also find out more about her backstory, making it a bit easier for me to connect to her. Once you hit the halfway point, it becomes incredibly difficult to put the book down. I'm definitely looking forward to reading book three!

The books get progressively better! But, sadly, I had to tell my 13 (then 12) year old that she couldn't read the latest book. It was more to the adult side of the YA spectrum, and she just doesn't need that much sex in her books!

message 105: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 837 comments another series to add to my list ;)

message 106: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments @Vilda, I've requested the prequel from the library but haven't read it yet.

@Laura, her books definitely veer more towards the adult side of YA! I think that's why I like them lol.

message 107: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments Vilda wrote: "Ohh, that sounds promising. I need to read this as well, but I got stuck on the prequel... Have you read the prequel?"

I don't suggest reading the prequel until after you've read the first book.

message 108: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments Vilda wrote: "I have read the first book and was recommended reading the prequel before the second, but I'm now stuck on that one and can't continue with the series, lol."

I think it is best to read it before the second one. Events in the prequel are referred to as though you should know more starting in the 2nd or 3rd one.

message 109: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I didn't really feel lost reading the second one without having read the prequel. However, I did find myself occasionally wishing I had been able to read the prequel first. Not sure if that helps at all lol.

message 110: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1168 comments I have to run out for a bit, so I'll check when I get back, but I'm assuming The Others is on there, so I'll read Murder of Crows.

Laura | 1168 comments Vilda wrote: "LOL, I just saw that we have all rated our Guilty Pleasure reads 4 stars so far. I wonder if Laura will also join the 4 star-club with hers. :D"

Probably not. Stephanie Plum sits at a solid 3 stars on my shelves. And I can't read more than one every few months. :)

Laura | 1168 comments Free Space

Book: Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera, #1) by Jim Butcher
How it works: On SOS bookshelf
Date Read: 2/8
Rating: 5 stars

I first read these books many years ago. And it holds up to re-reading. I love the world building in here. It is vast, but done with finesse. There is no suffocating info-dump about the world or the characters. And it's been long enough that there are a few things I don't remember, or don't remember when exactly they happen. But I can see hints that more characters know things than I had first thought. I can't wait to get on to the next one!

Laura | 1168 comments Guilty Pleasures

Book: Top Secret Twenty-One (Stephanie Plum, #21) by Janet Evanovich
Date Read: 2/9
Rating: 3 - 3.5 stars

What can I say about this one? Nothing new, that's for sure. Stephanie never changes, never grows, and never picks a man. I constantly ask myself, as I'm reading, why Ranger & Morelli put up with her. I never do get a satisfactory answer. And yet I keep reading. But I have found that I can't read more than one every few months without getting really irritated with Stephanie. Which is why it's taken me 2 years to get this far into the series. As long as you go in with low expectations of being entertained, but not given any substance at all, these books are worth the read.

That's the kind of teammate I prefer to be! January was just packed with books, and then I had 3 or 4 library books that had no renewals left on them. I'm trying to be more realistic about how many library books I have out at a time. It's not like I'll run out of things to read, with all the books on my Kindle, and my shelf of unread/owned books!

Starting Murder of Crows this afternoon, so I should have it finished tomorrow.

Review:
Incredible Fantasy story! I found this a refreshing twist to the hundreds of books out there about a young woman who defies all the odds. It stands apart from those others due to the author's brilliant writing, character development and mulit-layered story.
Feyre won my heart with her sincere loyalty to her family and her undying resilience. She is a hunter who kills a Faerie and is then forced to live in the faerie land of Prythian. She must live with the Faerie who imposes a treaty on her for the murder of their faerie friend. Feyre's hatred for Tamlin, the High Fae who rules the Autumn Court and his Courtier and Emissary , Lucien, is slowly broken down by the friendship that they quickly develop. In summary, Feyre doesn't stop fighting for freedom ... her's, her family's and eventually all of the Fae. I'll let you read to get the details ;) No need to spoil the story.
I honestly cannot come up with any dislikes for his book... Only that I need a break (sigh) before starting book 2.
This book is stock full of action, adventure, romance, loyalty and a lot of faerie dust! loved it!

Book: Murder of Crows (The Others, #2) by Anne Bishop
Date Read: 2/10
Rating: 5 stars

I loved the development of the relationship between Meg & Simon. Neither of them has a clue what is going on, or what to do with each other! And all this not-a-relationship drama comes against a backdrop of terrifying political and social climates. I want to shake all the stupid humans in this book. But then I realize it's frighteningly like people in our world, today!

I love watching Meg start coming into her own. She becomes more confident throughout this book, setting her up for the role she will begin to play as the Pathfinder.

Laura | 1168 comments Goodreads notifications are so messed up today! And I had a busy afternoon and totally forgot about the shelf call. I've got 2 upcoming books that probably work. Vision in Silver (The Others, #3) by Anne Bishop or One Fell Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles, #3) by Ilona Andrews . I'll be reading both this week, so let me check the tags for One Fell Sweep.

ETA: They're both on there, so whichever I finish first, depending on other challenges, I'll post over here. :)

Review

I was a little worried when I first started this one because Celaena's moping and feeling sorry for herself was very annoying. Thankfully, after the first couple chapters from her point of view, things started to pick up quickly, and I was able to lose myself in what was going on. I really liked that every chapter or two, we switch to a different character's perspective. It really didn't upset the pacing of the story at all for me and actually served to keep me engrossed in what was going on. Honestly, the only reason this isn't getting 5 stars from me is due to the moping at the beginning. Other than that, I really could find no fault with this one!

Book: Vision in Silver (The Others, #3) by Anne Bishop
Date read: 2/18
Rating: 5 stars

I love Simon and Meg! I love the sloooow burn of their relationship. Some how Bishop has created the ultimate will-they-won't-they relationship. With some series you just want to rush to the relationship. But with this series I'm totally content to wait as they figure out what they want and how to go about it. I love that Meg loves Simon as a Wolf and doesn't want to change him. I love that Meg is developing, and has people around her who snap her out of it when she gets wishy-washy. So. Simon and Meg. And some other stuff happened, but they are the focus.

Book: Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, #1) by Charlaine Harris
Date Read: 2/19/17
Rating: ★★★★

Review:
I was not too surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. It had everything I like: paranormal romance, vampires, likable female MC and even a little Southern hospitality. I appreciated the romance scenes, not too overly detailed.. spending only a few pages on the sex scenes. I also like how she slowly the author seeped out the paranormal information. I enjoyed learning tid bits about vamps and shiftshapers along the way, rather than all at once.
Sookie is a gem, she's a mind reading normal and lovable gal. Bill is a nice vamp who seems to genuinely care for Sookie and is trying to streamline into the regular population. I foresee many obstacles in the future for this couple and I am excited to join the ride!
4 stars because it was a good , re-readable book. Not 5 only because I didn't LOVE it. Takes a little more to give it a 5. However, it does make me want to watch the show True Blood ;D
